Since the original description of Gerstmann's syndrome with its four cardinal symptoms, among which are finger agnosia and acalculia, the neuro-cognitive relationship between fingers and calculation has been debated. We asked our participants to perform four different tasks, two of which involved fingers and the other two involving numbers, during repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the posterior parietal lobe of either hemisphere. In the finger tasks, they were required to transform a tactile stimulus randomly delivered on one of their fingers into a speeded key-press res

To determine the infection source of a sporadic Legionella pneumonia case associated with a hot spring bath, we used five molecular methods, including repetitive element polymerase chain reaction (rep-PCR), arbitrarily primed PCR (AP-PCR), ribotyping, restriction endonuclease analysis (REA), and macrorestriction endonuclease analysis (MREA) by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. L. pneumophila serogroup (SG) 3 strain EY 3702, isolated from an intratracheal specimen of a 71-year-old Japanese female who developed pneumonia after nearly drowning in a hot spring spa bath, produced rep-PCR and AP-PCR

Neurodegenerative diseases arise from interactions among pathogenic proteins, immune responses, and diverse environmental or age-related stressors that disrupt CNS homeostasis. CNS resident microglia detect self-derived danger signals through pattern recognition receptors, and their activation can promote clearance of aberrant proteins, including amyloid-β, tau, α-synuclein, and TAR DNA-binding protein 43. However, microglial activation may also drive maladaptive states that amplify neuroinflammation. Microglial transitions are further shaped by receptor-mediated signaling and antigen presenta

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) poses a significant challenge, with many patients failing to achieve remission with conventional therapies. While repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is an established and effective neuromodulatory treatment for TRD, a notable proportion of patients do not fully respond. Despite the clinical utility of rTMS, response variability remains a significant barrier to treatment optimization. We propose that this variability may be driven, in part, by fluctuations in baseline network configuration and momentary brain states. This motivates the inves

BACKGROUND: Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) over the primary motor cortex (M1) has been used to treat stroke motor sequelae regulating cortical excitability. Early interventions are widely recommended, but there is also evidence showing interventions in subacute or chronic phases are still useful.
OBJECTIVE: To synthetize the evidence of rTMS protocols to improve upper limb motor function in people with subacute and/or chronic stroke.
METHODS: Four databases were searched in July 2022. Clinical trials investigating the effectiveness of different rTMS protocols on upper li

Studying the neuronal mechanisms that govern the cortical adaptations to acute stress is critical for understanding the development of neuropsychiatric diseases. Homeostatic plasticity stabilizes the neural activity in which a previous synaptic event drives subsequent synaptic plasticity. In this study, we evaluated the effect of acute stress induced with the socially evaluated cold pressor test (SECPT) on cortical metaplasticity in humans using a non-invasive brain stimulation protocol. After being exposed to the SECPT and control stress conditions, 30 healthy participants were tested for cor

Cellular accumulation of repetitive RNA occurs in several dominantly-inherited genetic disorders. Expanded CUG, CCUG or GGGGCC repeats are expressed in myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1), myotonic dystrophy type 2 (DM2), or familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, respectively. Expanded repeat RNAs (ER-RNAs) exert a toxic gain-of-function and are prime therapeutic targets in these diseases. However, efforts to quantify ER-RNA levels or monitor knockdown are confounded by stable structure and heterogeneity of the ER-RNA tract and background signal from non-expanded repeats. Here, we used a thermost

Fusobacterium nucleatum is a gram-negative non-spore-forming, non-motile, obligate anaerobic rod that is normally isolated from the oral cavity. Several studies have reported a significant heterogeneity within the F. nucleatum species. The aim of the present study was to analyze the clonal diversity of F. nucleatum strains isolated from intracanal infections and to evaluate the presence of Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus (ERIC)-like sequences in the genome of F. nucleatum. Samples were collected from 13 single-root teeth from adult patients, all having carious lesions, necrotic

BACKGROUND: Action observation and imitation training (AOIT) is an evidence-based cognitive-motor rehabilitation strategy for Parkinson's disease (PD), particularly for the postural instability and gait disorder (PIGD) subtype. However, its effectiveness may decline with disease-related impairments in neuroplasticity. Intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS), a patterned repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation protocol, can induce LTP-like plasticity and may enhance responsiveness to rehabilitation. This study investigated whether iTBS priming augments AOIT effects on gait and cognitio

BACKGROUND: Many school-age children with specific language impairment produce sentences that appear to conform to the adult grammar. It may be premature to conclude from this, however, that their language formulation ability is age appropriate.
AIMS: To determine whether a more subtle measure of language use, speech disruptions during sentence formulation, might serve to distinguish children with specific language impairment from their typically developing peers at an age when grammatical accuracy was high. We analysed the rate of speech disruptions in simple sentence production in school-ag

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite capable of causing acute lethal disease and establishing lifelong chronic infection through tissue cyst formation. Development of an effective vaccine remains an important goal. Microneme protein 8 (MIC8), an invasion-associated antigen conserved across parasite lineages, represents a promising vaccine target.
METHODS: A heterologous DNA-protein prime-boost vaccination strategy targeting the MIC8 gene derived from the ME49 strain was evaluated in female BALB/c mice. Animals (n = 10 per group) were allocated to six g

Exposure of normal adult rats of a variety of species to trains of light flashes leads to acquisition of an enduring high amplitude visual cortical response [Uhlrich DJ, Manning KA, O'Laughlin ML, Lytton WW (2005) Photic-induced sensitization: acquisition of an augmenting spike-wave response in the adult rat through repeated strobe exposure. J Neurophysiol 94:3925-3937]. The photically-induced sensitized response exhibits epileptiform characteristics, including spike-wave morphology, tendency to generalize across the brain, and sensitivity to the anti-epileptic drug ethosuximide. These finding

We investigated the effects of repetitive recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF) administration at three different doses (every 12 h times six doses, starting at 12-24 h of age) on the kinetics of neutrophil production in Sprague-Dawley rats. We determined WBC counts, differentials, the number of total nucleated cells, the myeloid mitotic pool cells (promyelocytes and myelocytes), the storage pool cells (metamyelocytes, bands, and polymorphonuclear cells [PMNs]) and the granulocyte-macrophage (granulocyte-macrophage colony-forming units, CFU-GM) and macrophage (macro

IMPORTANCE: Tinnitus has a prevalence of 10% to 25% and is frequently associated with numerous complications, such as neuropsychiatric disease. Traditional treatments have failed to meet the needs of patients with tinnitus. Noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) can focally modify cortical functioning and has been proposed as a strategy for reducing tinnitus severity. However, the results have been inconclusive.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between different central NIBS therapies and efficacy and acceptability for treatment of tinnitus.

Defense-associated reverse transcriptases (DRTs) employ diverse and distinctive mechanisms of cDNA synthesis to protect bacteria against viral infection1. However, the functions and mechanisms of many DRTs remain unknown2. Here we identify a new antiviral defense system, DRT10, that associates with a noncoding RNA (ncRNA) to catalyze processive, protein-primed synthesis of tandem-repeat DNA. Reverse transcription is templated by a defined ncRNA region with a characteristic sequence pattern and template boundary elements, both of which are conserved and essential for DNA repeat addition. Functional behaviour affords that we form goals to integrate sensory information about the world around us with suitable motor actions, such as when we plan to grab an object with a hand. However, much research has tested grasping in static scenarios where goals are pursued with repetitive movements, whereas dynamic contexts require goals to be pursued even when changes in the environment require a change in the actions to attain them. To study grasp goals in dynamic environments here, we employed a task where the goal remained the same but the execution of the movement changed; we primed part

Surfactant substitution has been a major breakthrough in the treatment of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), primarily caused by a lack of pulmonary surfactant; it has significantly reduced mortality and acute pulmonary morbidity in preterm infants. Some very immature infants, however, have a poor response to surfactant replacement or an early relapse. This brief article is based on the hypothesis that neonatal RDS has a complex and multifactorial pathogenesis characterized by an injurious inflammatory sequence in the immature lung. Fetal exposure to chorioamnionitis has been shown

In this study, we investigate how two persons (dyads) coordinate their movements when performing cyclical motion patterns on a rocking board. In keeping with the Leading Joint Hypothesis (Dounskaia, 2005), the movement dynamics of the collaborating participants were expected to display features of a prime mover with low movement variability. Fourteen subject pairs performed the task in nine amplitude-frequency combinations that were presented in the form of a to-be-tracked stimulus on a computer display. Participants were asked to track the stimulus by jointly rocking the Board sideways while

The olfactory bulb is a second-order brain region that connects sensory neurons with cortical areas. However, the olfactory bulb does not appear to play a simple relay role and is subject instead to extensive local and extrinsic synaptic influences. Prime among the external, or centrifugal, inputs is the dense cholinergic innervation from the basal forebrain, which terminates in both the granule cell and plexiform layers. Cholinergic inputs to the bulb have been implicated in olfactory working memory tasks in rodents and may be related to olfactory deficits reported in people with neurodegener
