Adaptive modes of rumination: the role of subjective anger.

Rumination has been demonstrated to have negative consequences on affect, behaviour, and physiological markers. Recent studies, however, suggest that distinct "modes" of anger-associated rumination may lead to several positive consequences. Previous research primarily used recall procedures of anger episodes to elicit anger. By contrast, the present study focused on the effect of subjective anger on the process of rumination and tested its effects in a "staged" social interaction where a confederate provoked participants. Subsequently, participants engaged in rumination about the anger-eliciti

Upper extremity pain in the postrehabilitation spinal cord injured patient.

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of upper extremity (UE) pain in outpatients with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). A total of 239 SCI outpatients (136 with quadriplegia and 103 with paraplegia) were interviewed for the presence of UE pain at the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand. The average age of the subjects at the time of interview was 37.4 years, and the average time since onset was 12.1 years. Subjects who reported pain were referred to SCI clinics to determine the etiology. Fifty-five percent of the patients with quadriplegia reported UE pain, most commonly at t

Childbirth as a traumatic event for attendant fathers.

Background: Negative reactions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following childbirth have been increasingly reported in mothers, particularly following objectively and subjectively difficult childbirth experiences. A small body of research has examined fathers' reactions to childbirth, with mixed results. Objective: The study aimed to further these studies, investigating whether objective and subjective aspects of fathers' participation in childbirth were related to levels of PTSD and fear of childbirth symptoms, in the first year following childbirth.Method: In total, 224 fathers

Embodied Neuropsychodynamics of the Relational Self Across Space and Time: An Integrative Narrative Review.

Extensive explorations in neuroscience, psychology, and psychotherapy increasingly recognized the embodied and relational foundations of selfhood, underscoring the need for an integrated framework spanning development, psychopathology, and therapeutic change. This narrative review synthesizes empirical and theoretical literature across neuroscience, embodiment research, predictive processing, developmental science, phenomenology, and psychodynamic theory, proposing a multidimensional neuropsychodynamic framework of embodied selfhood and its clinical implications. A central contribution is the

Fluctuations between sleep and wakefulness: wake-like features indicated by increased EEG alpha power during different sleep stages in nightmare disorder.

Although a growing body of research indicates that frequent nightmares are related to impaired sleep regulation, the pathophysiology of nightmare disorder is far from being fully understood. We examined the relative spectral power values for NREM and REM sleep separately in 19 individuals with nightmare disorder and 21 healthy controls, based on polysomnographic recordings of the second nights' laboratory sleep. Nightmare subjects compared to controls exhibited increased relative high alpha (10-14.5Hz) and fronto-central increases in high delta (3-4Hz) power during REM sleep, and a trend of in

Effects of ulnar deviation of the wrist combined with flexion/extension on the maximum voluntary contraction of grip.

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) is related with the frequency of exertion for repetitive tasks requiring heavy load. Different researchers have reported that a poor posture is very much responsible for WMSD if combined with increased load and/or frequency. In the assembly tasks in different industries involve the gripping very commonly. Therefore in the present study it was tried to find the effect of a wrist posture on grip strength. For design of experiment, subjects, flexion/extension and ulnar deviation of the wrist were taken as independent variables and the dependent varia

Acute effects of oral delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on autonomic cardiac activity and their relation to subjective and anxiogenic effects.

Cannabis is the most commonly used psychotropic drug in the United States, after alcohol. Despite its apparent sedative and calming effects, cannabis and its main psychoactive constituent, ∆9 -tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can produce serious adverse effects including tachycardia and anxiety. These effects can be especially pronounced in women, who remain underrepresented in clinical cannabinoid research. The present study is one of the first to characterize the effects of single doses of oral THC on autonomic nervous system function in healthy adult women. Occasional female cannabis users partic

Childhood Use of Coin Pusher and Crane Grab Machines, and Adult Gambling: Robustness to Subjective Confidence in a Young Adult USA Sample.

Gambling as a youth is a risk factor for experiencing gambling-related harm as an adult. Most youth gambling research focuses on illegal engagement with age-restricted products, but youth can also gamble legally, by for example betting with friends, or via coin pusher and crane grab machines. Research has associated recollected rates of usage of these machines as a child with adult gambling participation and problems, but only in the UK and Australia, and has not tested for robustness to subjective confidence. The present study conceptually replicated these prior studies by investigating the a

Cannabinoids, interoception, and anxiety.

The use of cannabis is rapidly gaining legal status across North America. Such dramatic legislative shifts have prompted an urgency in elucidating the stimulus effects of cannabis consumption. Cannabis use, though relatively safe compared to other drugs of abuse, has been associated with greater risk of mental health disorders, possibly via its primary psychoactive constituent, Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). In this review, we discuss endocannabinoid activation and cannabis constituents from the perspective of subjective interoceptive (internally-perceived) states and how that relates to anxi

Early stimulus processing in dysthymia and anhedonia.

Previous event-related brain potential (ERP) research has found that dysthymic subjects differ from control subjects during later stages of information processing. An important issue that emerges from this literature is whether differences found in these ERP components, typically associated with cognitive processing, can be attributed to earlier differences in basic perceptual processing. This study was undertaken to determine whether early processing deficits are apparent in dysthymic persons. Responses of dysthymics (n = 23) were compared with those of anhedonic (n = 15) and normal control (

Slower and more variable reaction times in schizophrenia: what do they signify?

Extensive research has demonstrated that schizophrenic subjects are slower than normal comparison subjects on a range of reaction-time tasks. Some investigators have also observed that schizophrenic patients exhibit larger intraindividual variability in reaction times when performing these tasks than do normal comparison subjects. This study, using a lexical decision choice reaction time (CRT) task, explored the relation of mean CRT and it intra-individual variability (CRT-SD) to psychiatric symptoms and to performance on executive-motor tasks in 26 medication-free schizophrenic out-patients a

Brain microstructure alterations in subjective cognitive decline: a multi-component T2 relaxometry study.

Previous research has revealed patterns of brain atrophy in subjective cognitive decline, a potential preclinical stage of Alzheimer's disease. However, the involvement of myelin content and microstructural alterations in subjective cognitive decline has not previously been investigated. This study included three groups of participants recruited from the Compostela Aging Study project: 53 cognitively unimpaired adults, 16 individuals with subjective cognitive decline and hippocampal atrophy and 70 with subjective cognitive decline and no hippocampal atrophy. Group differences were analysed acr

Development of novel mechanisms for housing, handling, and remote monitoring of common marmosets at animal biosafety level 3.

The use of common marmosets as an alternative non-human primate model for infectious disease research using BSL-3 viruses such as Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) presents unique challenges with respect to housing, handling, and safety. Subject matter experts from veterinary care, animal husbandry, biosafety, engineering, and research were consulted to design a pilot experiment using marmosets infected with RVFV. This paper reviews the caging, handling, and safety-related adaptations and modifications that were required to humanely utilize marmosets as a model for high-hazard BSL-3 viral disease

First annual Arnar-Stone lecture: The importance of the endocrine and metabolic responses to shock and trauma.

Trauma and shock result in activation of a wide variety of endocrine and metabolic systems. Based upon experimental work demonstrating metabolic deficits, a variety of metabolic therapies have been developed to assist in the treatment of patients with shock or trauma. Evidence to date is inconclusive as to whether this therapy will be of significant benefit to critically ill patients. Some of the senior author's previous research has been analyzed as it relates to important health policy issues. We suggest that a peer review mechanism be set up within organized professional groups to assess ma

Coronavirus Lockdown as a Major Life Stressor: Does It Affect TMD Symptoms?

Temporomandibular disorders are multi-factorial conditions that are caused by both physical and psychological factors. It has been well established that stress triggers or worsens TMDs. This paper looks to present early research, still unfolding, on the relationship between COVID-19 as a major life stressor and TMDs. The main aims of this study were to: investigate the presence of symptoms related to TMDs and the time of onset and the worsening of painful symptoms in relation to the changes in social life imposed by the coronavirus pandemic; and to evaluate the perception of COVID-19 as a majo

Intoxication, criminal offences and suicide attempts in a group of South African problem drinkers.

BACKGROUND: Incidence rates of crime and alcohol abuse in South Africa are unacceptably high. Research suggests a relationship between alcohol and both crime and suicide. This study aims to add to the information base on this topic in South Africa. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional record study of criminal offences and suicide attempts in 269 admissions to an alcohol rehabilitation unit in the Western Cape. Types of criminal offences and suicide attempts are described. Relationships are sought between crime, violent crime and suicide attempts on the one hand, and demographic and alcohol-rela

Predicting the Subjective Health Experience of Older Adults: A Modelling Approach.

INTRODUCTION: As people age, they increasingly face physical and cognitive decline, which can negatively affect their subjective health experience. To improve subjective health experience among older adults, it is crucial to understand its key predictors. Current literature points to frailty and vitality from geriatric research as well as acceptance and control from psychological science as key predictors. However, until now, they have never been incorporated in one composite model. Therefore, this study aims to develop, validate and differentiate a composite model integrating these predictors
