Investigating the impacts of alcohol outlet zoning policy on alcohol consumption and access to non-alcoholic services: A spatial agent-based simulation.

Debates continue over the effectiveness of limiting alcohol outlet density in reducing alcohol consumption, and its broader impacts on access to non-alcoholic services in low-income urban communities remain underexplored. This study addresses this gap by investigating the impacts of alcohol outlet zoning policies on alcohol consumption and walkable access to non-alcoholic services in low-income urban communities with different baseline densities of liquor and grocery stores. We developed a spatial agent-based model of Baltimore City neighborhoods, simulating the closure of non-conforming liquo

The Gentrification Acceleration Press Schema: A Critical Examination of Gentrification-Induced Displacement in Later Life.

Aging in place is an important environmental consideration in gerontology from the standpoint of research and aging individuals. Although the majority of aging adults in the United States prefer aging in place to relocating to different environments (e.g., retirement communities and cohabitation with adult children), many barriers prevent this outcome. For example, for low-income and marginalized older adults, aging in place is far from a certainty due to historical disadvantages. Unanticipated changes to one's environment, such as neighborhood gentrification, may threaten one's ability to age

Urban neighborhood factors influencing adolescent health and well-being: A qualitative study among adolescent boys in the city of Utrecht, the Netherlands.

Adolescent health and well-being is significantly influenced by the urban living environment. This study examined what health and well-being mean to adolescents and how they perceive neighborhood factors as influencing them. Interviews with 15 adolescent boys from a low socioeconomic urban neighborhood in the City of Utrecht, the Netherlands, reveal that, according to these boys, doing fun things and spending time with friends and peers underpin their health. The adolescents indicated that such activities support adolescents' subjective well-being by providing opportunities to, inter alia, dev

Area-Level Factors of Dental Caries in Children and Adolescents in European Neighborhoods - a Systematic Review.

The WHO emphasizes the importance of taking area-level factors into account when formulating public health interventions. The aim of this systematic review was to identify which area-level factors are associated with children's dental caries in Europe and might therefore be a suitable starting point for public health interventions. We conducted a systematic review based on a search in PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library including all European studies on caries in children and their area-level factors published since the year 2000 in English or German. We included 39 studies and identi

The social environment and cognitive aging over the life course: laying out critical concepts and research gaps.

The social environment refers to our interpersonal relations, workplaces, and neighborhoods, towns, or cities in which we live. A growing literature indicates that social environments are related to cognitive aging and risk of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD). Still, relatively little is known about how social-environmental exposures affect cognitive function over the life course and into older ages. Addressing this limitation, our paper outlines key features of the social environment and recommends priority areas of research on the social environment and cognitive aging. We

A study on analysing sociospatial distribution and equity in access to urban parks in Bengaluru, India.

BACKGROUND: Given the effect of urbanisation on land use, allocation, and implementation of urban green spaces, we attempt to analyse the sociospatial distribution and equity in access to urban parks in Bengaluru, India, also known as the garden city of India. METHODS: Geospatial method was used for mapping the park's distribution and measuring the accessibility using road network data. To understand equitable access to the parks, four socioeconomic parameters from 2011 census (ie, population density, children aged 6 years or younger, proxy wealth index, and the Scheduled Caste population) we

Meanings of Aging in the Right Place for Older Clients of a Temporary Housing Program.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The concept of aging in place is acknowledged as the preference of older adults, yet without consideration of the intersections of diversity in later life, it is critiqued as unattainable, unrealistic, or even undesirable. This gave rise to the exploration of what is needed to age in the right place (AIRP). Building on existing research, we examined the meaning of AIRP to older adults (aged 55+ years) who have experienced homelessness. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted photovoice interviews with 11 residents of a temporary housing program in Metro Vancouver

The role of personality in neighborhood satisfaction.

Urbanists have long been interested in understanding what makes people satisfied with their neighborhoods. However, relatively little is known about how residents' personality traits may affect their neighborhood satisfaction. In this paper, we explore the direct and indirect associations of personality traits with neighborhood satisfaction in a representative sample of adults in Michigan (USA). We find that each of the personality traits in the five factor model are associated with neighborhood satisfaction in the same way that they are known to be associated with subjective well-being. Sociodemographic Disparities in Tobacco Retailer Density in the United States, 2000-2017.

INTRODUCTION: Studies find differences in tobacco retailer density according to neighborhood sociodemographic characteristics, raising issues of social justice, but not all research is consistent. AIMS AND METHODS: This study examined associations between tobacco retailer density and neighborhood sociodemographic characteristics in the United States at four timepoints (2000, 2007, 2012, and 2017) and investigated if associations remained stable over time. Data on tobacco retailers came from the National Establishment Time-Series Database. Adjusted log-linear models examined the relationship b

Differential Access to Park Space Based on Country of Origin within Miami's Hispanic/Latino Population: A Novel Analysis of Park Equity.

Some U.S.-based park equity studies reveal that affluent and White neighborhoods have privileged access to greenspace. In such studies in the U.S. and elsewhere, park access indicators are typically examined in relation to measures of income, housing tenure, and broad race/ethnicity categories (e.g., Hispanic/Latino, Black, and White in the U.S.). The treatment of people as monolithic ethnic groups in park equity research is potentially misleading, particularly in global cities where ethnic populations are highly heterogeneous. In this study, we assess inequities in access to park space within

Community daytime noise pollution and socioeconomic differences in Chicago, IL.

Environmental noise may affect hearing and a variety of non-auditory disease processes. There is some evidence that, like other environmental hazards, noise may be differentially distributed across communities based on socioeconomic status. We aimed to a) predict daytime noise pollution levels and b) assess disparities in daytime noise exposure in Chicago, Illinois. We measured 5-minute daytime noise levels (Leq, 5-min) at 75 randomly selected sites in Chicago in March, 2019. Geographically-based variables thought to be associated with noise were obtained, and used to fit a noise land-use regr

The Impact of Residing in a Gang Territory on Adverse Birth Outcomes: Evidence from Los Angeles.

Gang violence remains an ongoing crisis in many communities in the United States. This paper assesses the potential association of gang-occupied neighborhoods with birth outcomes. Adverse birth outcomes serve as a "barometer" of population health, denoting both poor conditions for human development and portending future public health concerns. We draw upon (1) Los Angeles County Vital Statistics Birth Records (2008-2012), (2) GIS information on gang territory boundaries, (3) LA city geo-coded crime data, and (4) the 2010 U.S. Census and 2006-2010 American Community Survey. Aggregate-level Lead Exposure and Child Maltreatment.

The purpose of this study was to examine the possible ecological association between aggregate blood lead levels (BLL) and rates of child maltreatment. To this end, we employed an ecologic study design, analyzing results from 59,645 child BLL tests between the years 1996 and 2007, and 6,640 substantiated maltreatment investigations from 2006 to 2016 in a large Midwest city. Separate Bayesian spatial Poisson conditional autoregressive (CAR) and Bayesian spatial zero-inflated Poisson CAR models were used to predict the occurrence of maltreatment.Bivariate results showed that aggregate rates of m

Residential greenspace is associated with mental health via intertwined capacity-building and capacity-restoring pathways.

BACKGROUND: Experiences afforded by natural settings promote health by helping people to build new adaptive capacities and to restore existing capacities. The aim of this study was to examine relations among restorative experience, mindfulness, rumination and psychological resilience in pathways linking residential greenspace to anxiety and depression symptoms. METHODS: We sampled 529 university students residing in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Residential greenspace was measured in terms of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and tree cover density for different buffer sizes. Symptoms of

Moving beyond living arrangements: the role of family and friendship ties in promoting mental health for urban and rural older adults in China.

Objective: This study examines the interplay among living arrangements, social networks, and depressive symptoms among Chinese older adults. Methods: Data are derived from the 2014 baseline survey of the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS), which provides a sample of older Chinese who had been married and had children (N = 7,662). This study examines the association between living arrangements and depressive symptoms (measured as CES-D scale, 0-18) of older adults, and addresses the moderating role of social networks (measured as family ties and friendship ties, 0-15) on this perceiv

The legacy of the Home Owners' Loan Corporation and the political ecology of urban trees and air pollution in the United States.

This study examines the persistent impacts of historical racebased discriminatory housing policies on contemporary urban environments in the United States. Specifically, we examine the relationships between Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC) grades assigned to neighborhoods in the 1930s and the current distribution of tree canopy and level of exposure to air pollution hazards. Our results indicate a clear gradient in tree canopy by HOLC grade, with better neighborhood grades associated with significantly higher percentage of tree canopy coverage. The pattern also exists for airborne carcinog

Residential segregation, dividing walls and mental health: a population-based record linkage study.

BACKGROUND: Neighbourhood segregation has been described as a fundamental determinant of physical health, but literature on its effect on mental health is less clear. While most previous research has relied on conceptualised measures of segregation, Northern Ireland is unique as it contains physical manifestations of segregation in the form of segregation barriers (or 'peacelines') which can be used to accurately identify residential segregation. METHODS: We used population-wide health record data on over 1.3 million individuals, to analyse the effect of residential segregation, measured by b
