[Bilateral retinitis: early manifestation of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. A case report].

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a progressive encephalitis caused by persistent measles infection. The disease is almost always fatal and mainly affects children and young adults. Ophthalmological signs are frequently observed and can be the presenting manifestations. We report the case of a 22-year-old young man who presented with bilateral posterior retinal necrosis confirmed by fluorescein angiography and normal laboratory tests. The appearance of peripheral retinal tears and stereotyped myoclonic movements were signs of the evolving condition. Diagnosis of SSPE was confirmed

New and previously unidentified retinal breaks in eyes with recurrent retinal detachment with proliferative vitreoretinopathy.

The location of retinal breaks found on preoperative examination was studied in 68 eyes of 68 patients with recurrent retinal detachment and proliferative vitreoretinopathy. Twelve eyes had 23 open breaks that were known to exist previously, no open break was detected in 18 eyes, and 72 new or previously unidentified breaks were found in 41 eyes. Forty-seven (65.3%) of the 72 breaks were located on previous buckles, and 31 of these were on the posterior slope of the buckle. Twenty-nine (40.2%) of all new or previously unidentified breaks were on the border of a cryopexy-induced chorioretinal s

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachments caused by paravascular vitreoretinal traction.

We describe three cases of shallow posterior rhegmatogenous retinal detachment caused by tiny retinal tears. The clinical appearance of the detachments was very similar to that of idiopathic central serous chorioretinopathy or traction retinal detachment. However, the correct diagnosis was made by finding a tiny paravascular break. Vitrectomy without a thermal adhesion was successful in repairing the detachments.

Clinical application of autofluorescence densitometry with a scanning laser ophthalmoscope.

PURPOSE: Fundus autofluorescence (FAF) affects the overlying absorptive retinal pigments within the eye and can potentially be used to assess their density. This study reports a clinical application of FAF in measuring photopigments by scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO). METHODS: The study group comprised 20 healthy subjects, 4 patients with branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO), 3 with macular hole, 3 with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO), and 4 with resolved central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). Serial FAF images were taken during exposure to light. The intensity of the FAF was meas

Localised gamma irradiation and experimental intraocular proliferation.

A controlled study was undertaken to assess the effect of gamma irradiation on post-traumatic intraocular cellular proliferation. A standard perforating injury in the posterior segment of the rabbit eye was used to induce intraocular cellular proliferation and vitreo-retinal membrane formation. The site of injury was irradiated with an ophthalmic Cobalt60 applicator which provided a continuous source of gamma rays. Non-irradiated eyes developed traction retinal detachments associated with post-traumatic vitreo-retinal membranes. Irradiated eyes developed attenuated membranes or atrophic retina

Simultaneous extrusion and intrusion of a scleral buckle in a patient with Marfan's syndrome.

An Asian male in his late 50s with known Marfan's syndrome (MFS) presented with sudden deterioration in vision and loss of globe structure 13 years after the placement of a silicone scleral encircling band for the management of retinal detachment. Surgical exploration revealed simultaneous intrusion and extrusion of the encircling band resulting in globe perforation and collapse. This was managed by removal of the encircling band and a scleral patch graft over the defect. This case highlights that in patients with thin sclera, such as in MFS, scleral perforation is a potential complication tha

Spontaneous rupture of chorioretinal coloboma in an 8-year-old child is treated by temporal fascia graft.

We report the rare case of an 8-year-old boy with spontaneous scleral perforation secondary to an isolated congenital chorioretinal coloboma. Visual acuity was 20/200 and examination revealed severe hypotony with subcapsular cataract, complete exudative retinal detachment, hypotonous optic nerve swelling, and hypotony retinal fold. In the temporal periphery, there was a chorioretinal coloboma with a central full-thickness defect. The scleral defect was successfully treated with an autologous temporalis fascia graft. One year later, and after cataract surgery, visual acuity had improved to 20/2

[Direct optic nerve and retinal injury caused by retrobulbar injections].

The authors report on 2 patients with direct damage to the optic nerve and retina: In a 25-year-old deaf-mute patient a peripheral iridectomy was performed after lid and retrobulbar anesthesia. The amaurosis noticed immediately after surgery was caused by direct injury to the optic nerve. A 69-year-old patient with high myopia was treated with retrobulbar steroid injections. The globe was perforated and a series of 4 retinal defects from the periphery to close to the optic nerve head were created. An unhealed retinal detachment developed. The importance of informing the patient preoperatively

[The influence of the idiopathic macular hole (IMH) surgery with the ILM peeling and gas tamponade on the electrical function of the retina].

Many contemporary clinical papers establish positive influence of the pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with the ILM (internal limiting membrane) peeling and gas tamponade in macular hole to the macular morphology. They prove diminishing or disappearing of the central scotoma and metamorphopsia and especially also improvement of the BCVA for far and near. The evaluation of the objective functional condition of the retina is still a discussed question. This paper concerns with the comparison of the electric functions of the retina before and after the IMH surgery with the ILM peeling and the gas tamp
