In humans, Rhodococcus equi (R. equi) is a zoonotic infection usually involving immunocompromised subjects, only rarely affecting immunocompetent subjects. Herein, we describe an R. equi infection in a 50-year-old Russian man with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) who presented with pulmonary cavitary lesions and clinical manifestation of colonic malakoplakia. A colonoscopy examination showed ulceration and mucosal erosion, and the histological findings confirmed the colonic malakoplakia. The patient recovered from pulmonary and gastrointestinal disease after four weeks of antibiotic

Rhodococcus equi is a conditionally pathogenic bacterium widely distributed in soil, water, and marine environments, which can cause respiratory infections, pleurisy, blood and even bone marrow infections in immunocompromised people, and particularly in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). This case report describes a patient with initially suspicion of tuberculosis (TB) as an outpatient in a TB clinic. However, laboratory findings identified R. equi in his sputum sample based on a positive acid-fast stain, which was highly suggestive of a pulmonary infection caused by R. e

Leafy gall is a plant hyperplasia induced upon Rhodococcus fascians infection. Previously, by genomic and transcriptomic analysis, it has been reported that, at the early stage of symptom development, both primary and secondary metabolisms are modified. The present study is based on the hypothesis that fully developed leafy gall, could represent a potential source of new bioactive compounds. Therefore, non-targeted metabolomic analysis of aqueous and chloroform extracts of leafy gall and non-infected tobacco was carried out by 1H-NMR coupled to principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal

Diversity of virulence-associated antigens of Rhodococcus equi was detected among thirteen strains isolated from AIDS patients on two continents. One out of four Brazilian isolates presented the virulence-associated antigen of 15- to 17-kDa, and the other three isolates had the 20-kDa virulence-associated antigen. In contrast, only three out of nine Italian isolates were positive for virulence-associated antigens - two for the 15- to 17-kDa antigen and one for the 20-kDa antigen. In four other Italian strains, one or more other low-molecular-weight antigens were identified. Because of R. equi

Rhodococcus equi pneumonia with systemic dissemination is being reported increasingly in immunocompromised patients. This is the first case report of disseminated R equi infection with biopsy documented involvement of the large intestine. The patient was a 46 year old male with AIDS who was diagnosed with cavitating pneumonia involving the left lower lobe. R equi was isolated in culture from the blood and lung biopsies. Subsequently, the patient developed anaemia, diarrhoea, and occult blood in the stool. Colonoscopy revealed several colonic polyps. Histological examination of the colon biopsi

BACKGROUND: Rhodococcus is an important genus of soil bacteria known for its metabolic diversity and environmental adaptability under harsh and contaminated conditions. However, few studies have reported on the selenium metabolism of Rhodococcus species.
RESULTS: Here, we isolated a highly selenite-resistance strain PM1 (up to 100 mM) from a selenium-rich mine in Enshi City. This strain reduced 50 mM sodium selenite by 99 % within 72 h. SEM and XPS revealed that PM1 reduced selenite to selenium nanorods (SeNRs). Phylogenetic analysis identified PM1 as R. qingshengii. The whole genome of strai

Carbendazim persists in soil, causing harm to the environment. Microbial degradation is a main way to remove carbendazim from soil, and polyethylene (PE), as a kind of microplastics, widely exists in soil. However, the mechanism by which PE influences carbendazim biodegradation is still unclear. This study isolated Rhodococcus sp. XY-1, a highly efficient carbendazim-degrading bacterium capable of completely degrading 50 mg·L-1 carbendazim, as its sole carbon and nitrogen source within 4 d. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that PE (700 µm, 5 %) depressed XY-1 cell surfaces but induced pro

Rhodococcus equi (R. equi) is a zoonotic opportunistic pathogen that mainly causes fatal lung and extrapulmonary abscesses in foals and immunocompromised individuals. To date, no commercial vaccine against R. equi exists. We previously screened all potential vaccine candidates from the complete genome of R. equi using a reverse vaccinology approach. Five of these candidates, namely ABC transporter substrate-binding protein (ABC transporter), penicillin-binding protein 2 (PBD2), NlpC/P60 family protein (NlpC/P60), esterase family protein (Esterase), and M23 family metallopeptidase (M23) were se

Anthropogenic pollution, including residues from the green revolution initially aimed at addressing food security and healthcare, has paradoxically exacerbated environmental challenges. The transition towards comprehensive green biotechnology and bioremediation, achieved with lower financial investment, hinges on microbial biotechnology, with the Rhodococcus genus emerging as a promising contender. The significance of fully annotating genome sequences lies in comprehending strain constituents, devising experimental protocols, and strategically deploying these strains to address pertinent issue

: Rhodococcus equi is a facultative intracellular pathogen that causes infections in foals and many other animals such as pigs, cattle, sheep, and goats. Antibiotic resistance is rapidly rising in horse farms, which makes ineffective current antibiotic treatments based on a combination of macrolides and rifampicin. Therefore, new therapeutic strategies are urgently needed to treat R. equi infections caused by antimicrobial resistant strains. Here, we employed a R. equi mycoredoxin-null mutant strain highly susceptible to oxidative stress to screen for novel ROS-generating antibiotics. Then, we

BACKGROUND: Galactomannan index (GMI) at a level higher than 0.5 provides high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of fungal peritonitis. Here, we report the false-positive of GMI in peritoneal dialysis (PD) effluent (PDE) due to Rhodococcus peritonitis in PD patients.
CASE PRESENTATION: GMI in PDE of case #1 and case #2 were 1.53 and 0.76, respectively, while serum GMI of both cases was less than 0.5. In addition, GMI from the specimens obtained directly from the stationary phase of Rhodococcus colonies were 1.27 and 1.56, which were isolated from case #1 and #2, accordingly.

Rhodococcus erythropolis S43 is an arsenic-tolerant actinobacterium isolated from an arsenic contaminated soil. It has been shown to produce siderophores when exposed to iron-depleting conditions. In this work, strain S43 was shown to have the putative heterobactin production cluster htbABCDEFGHIJ(K). To induce siderophore production, the strain was cultured in iron-depleted medium in presence and absence of sodium arsenite. The metabolites produced by S43 in the colorimetric CAS and As-mCAS assays, respectively, showed iron- and arsenic-binding properties reaching a chelating activity equival

People infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are at increased risk for bacterial infections due to HIV-associated immunologic defects. Bacterial infections were found to be, both a predictor of progression to AIDS and a substantial cause of mortality in pre-AIDS stages. Most bacterial infections are caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Salmonella spp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Rhodococcus equi, Nocardia spp., Campylobacter spp. and Bartonella spp. are less common. Data derived from two AIDS Clinical Trials Group studies showed that the most common bacterial

Xenobiotic stress, such as crude oil contamination in soil, is a major environmental challenge that adversely affects plant growth and development. Among five isolates screened for their ability to degrade crude oil, Brevibacillus formosus strain HMA5 was the most potent strain showing oil degradation capacity of 83%. Temperature and incubation period are critical factors that affect hydrocarbon degradation as the best degradation capacity was obtained at temperature range of 30 °C - 40 °C and after 7 days of incubation period as degradation capacity was recorded up to 83%. Moreover, a co-cult

UNLABELLED: Rhodococcus equi is an opportunistic intracellular pathogen responsible for severe respiratory infections in foals, requiring prolonged antibiotic treatment. Despite its in vitro susceptibility to multiple antibiotics, the in vivo eradication of intracellular R. equi remains challenging due to its ability to persist and survive within alveolar macrophages. This study aimed to assess in vitro the extracellular and intracellular activity of rifampicin, doxycycline, and four macrolides against R. equi while assessing current methodologies used to differentiate intracellular and extrac

Rhodococcus equi is an emerging opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised patients. Owing to its resemblance to Mycobacterium, Nocardia, and Corynebacterium, R. equi is frequently misdiagnosed as a contaminant, which can result in treatment delays. A 65-year-old man with a history of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) presented to the emergency room with pain and increased swelling in his right upper extremity. Shortly after he arrived in the emergency room, his condition deteriorated. Intravenous vancomycin was administered after collecting blood cultures. The blood cultures grew Rhodococcus eq

Pistachio Bushy Top Syndrome (PBTS) is a recently emerged disease that has strongly impacted the pistachio industry in California, Arizona, and New Mexico. The disease is caused by two bacteria, designated PBTS1 that is related to Rhodococcus corynebacterioides and PBTS2 that belongs to the species R. fascians. Here, we assessed the pathogenic character of the causative agents and examined their chromosomal sequences to predict the presence of particular functions that might contribute to the observed co-occurrence and their effect on plant hosts. In diverse assays, we confirmed the pathogenic

We report herein Rhodococcus equi infection in an 11-y-old, male llama with a history of diarrhea and endoparasitism. Postmortem examination revealed granulomatous and ulcerative enteritis, pyogranulomatous mesenteric lymphadenitis, fibrinosuppurative peritonitis, and granulomatous hepatitis. Intralesional macrophages were laden with gram-positive cocci. Bacteriology identified R. equi, and cultures tested positive for R. equi choE and vapA genes by PCR. This case expands the reported spectrum of lesions associated with R. equi infections in llamas from pyogranulomatous bronchopneumonia and pe
