Two anatomical autopsy cases of direct communication between a persistent primitive trigeminal artery and an anterior inferior cerebellar artery.

The persistent primitive trigeminal artery (PPTA) is the most common persistent carotid-basilar anastomosis. However, morphological findings of the PPTA based on the anatomical autopsy are very scarce. To understand the reason why such a variant artery develops, it is essential to examine the detailed morphology of the PPTA and developmental process of this artery. Here, we present two anatomical autopsy instances of the PPTA (cases 1 and 2). In the first case (78-year-old female; right side), the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) arose from the internal carotid artery passing medial

How the mesencephalic locomotor region recruits hindbrain neurons.

This chapter summarizes experiments which were designed to reveal how repetitive electrical stimulation of the mesencephalic locomotor region (MLR) recruits nearby hindbrain neurons into activity, such that locomotion can ensue in the tiger salamander, A. tigrinum. The MLR stimulus strength was subthreshold or near-threshold for locomotor movements to ensue. Such relatively weak stimulation of the MLR produced locomotor movements after a relatively long delay, which featured neuronal interactions in the hindbrain. MLR-evoked spike responses of single hindbrain neurons were recorded before loco

Development of vestibular afferent projections into the hindbrain and their central targets.

In contrast to most other sensory systems, hardly anything is known about the neuroanatomical development of central projections of primary vestibular neurons and how their second order target neurons develop. Recent data suggest that afferent projections may develop not unlike other sensory systems, forming first the overall projection by molecular means followed by an as yet unspecified phase of activity mediated refinement. The latter aspect has not been tested critically and most molecules that guide the initial projection are unknown. The molecular and topological origin of the vestibular

Telencephalosynapsis (synencephaly) and rhombencephalosynapsis with posterior fossa ventriculocele ('Dandy-Walker cyst'): an unusual aberrant syngenetic complex.

Agenesis of the cerebellar vermis (paleocerebellar agenesis) with fusion of the cerebellar hemispheres (rhombencephalosynapsis) is a rare malformation of the central nervous system (CNS). Its combination with synencephaly (telencephalosynapsis), telencephalic ventricular aplasia, aqueductal atresia and cystic fourth ventricle has not yet been described, as far as we know. Here, we report this combination in a 23-weeks' gestation male fetus who was aborted to a 24-year-old diabetic mother. In this fetus with cerebral and cerebellar hemispheric fusion, vermian agenesis was associated with a Dand

Listeria rhombencephalitis mimicking tuberculous meningitis.

A previously healthy man developed a progressive neurologic illness characterized by an "aseptic meningitis syndrome," progressive hypoglycorrhachia, and severe brain-stem dysfunction. Initial dramatic response to antituberculosis therapy supported the diagnosis of tuberculous basilar meningitis; however, Listeria monocytogenes eventually grew in a blood culture, and the patient recovered following intravenous ampicillin therapy. The entity of listerial rhombencephalitis should be considered as a treatable cause of acute, progressive brain-stem meningoencephalitis.

The Originality of Neuro Rehabilitation Protocols in a Definitive Case of Syringomyelia Related to Chiari I Malformation.

Syringomyelia is a center-medullary syndrome characterized by the presence of fluid-filled spaces known as syrinx within the spinal canal. Arnold Chiari Malformation (CM-I), a rhombencephalon anomaly formerly identified as hindbrain hernia, is usually associated with it. This disorder causes the brain (cerebellum) to bulge through the opening in the skull known as the foramen magnum. Some asymptomatic patients may develop symptoms quickly if they jolt their heads and cough for a lengthy period of time. Syringomyelia can be caused by trauma, illness, inflammation, or previous surgery that affec

Centrifugal visual system of Crocodylus niloticus: a hodological, histochemical, and immunocytochemical study.

The retinopetal neurons of Crocodylus niloticus were visualized by retrograde transport of rhodamine beta-isothiocyanate or Fast Blue administered by intraocular injection. Approximately 6,000 in number, these neurons are distributed in seven regions extending from the mesencephalic tegmentum to the rostral rhombencephalon, approximately 70% being located contralaterally to the injected eye. None of the centrifugal neurons projects to both retinae. The retinopetal neurons are located in rostrocaudal sequence in seven regions: the formatio reticularis lateralis mesencephali, the substantia nigr

Ontogeny of NADPH diaphorase/nitric oxide synthase reactivity in the brain of Xenopus laevis.

The development of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) expression in the brain of Xenopus laevis tadpoles was studied by means of immunohistochemistry using specific antibodies against NOS and enzyme histochemistry for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH)-diaphorase. Both techniques yielded identical results and were equally suitable for demonstrating the nitrergic system in the brain. The only mismatches were observed in the olfactory nerve and glomeruli and in the terminal nerve; they were intensely labeled with the NADPH-diaphorase technique but failed to stain with NOS immunohistoch

Early ontogeny of catecholaminergic cell lineage in brain and peripheral neurons monitored by tyrosine hydroxylase-lacZ transgene.

As the first and rate limiting enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway for catecholamine (CA) neurotransmitters, tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) is a specific phenotypic marker for CA cells in the central and peripheral nervous systems of adult animals. During embryogenesis, TH expression appears permanently within cells destined to be CA-secreting during adult life, and transiently in several cell types that will not express TH in adulthood. In this study, we examined the early ontogeny of TH expression in transgenic mouse embryos by following the expression of a lacZ reporter, driven by the tissue-spec

Transcription of a new zinc finger gene, rKr1, is localized to subtypes of neurons in the adult rat CNS.

Proteins which share zinc finger DNA binding motifs comprise one of the main families of transcription factors. We have previously described rKr1, a new rat Cys2/Hys2 zinc finger gene of the Krüppel gene family. This gene is predominantly expressed in the nervous system, with highest abundance in neurons and with lower abundance in developing oligodendrocytes of the CNS. Here, we have undertaken a detailed anatomical analysis of rKr1 expression in the adult brain of the rat using in situ hybridization. Our results show that rKr1 is expressed in a specific manner in defined subpopulations of ne

Localization of mercury in CNS of the rat. II. Intraperitoneal injection of methylmercuric chloride (CH3HgCl) and mercuric chloride (HgCl2).

The autometallographic method has been used to determine the precise localization of mercury in the brain and spinal cord of adult Wistar rats which had been treated with repeated ip injections of methylmercuric chloride (CH3HgCl; 0.2 to 10.0 mg) or mercuric chloride (HgCl2; 0.2 to 10.0 mg). The distribution of mercury was uneven following administration of HgCl2, while it was fairly homogeneous following CH3HgCl. With both compounds, however, heavy deposits of mercury were present in the motor nuclei of rhombencephalon. In contrast, cerebellar Purkinje cells, Golgi cells, and Golgi epithelial

Antibody against nerve growth factor-inducible large external (NILE) glycoprotein labels nerve fiber tracts in the developing rat nervous system.

The NILE (nerve growth factor-inducible large external) glycoprotein is a 230,000-dalton molecule found on the surface of PC12 cells. Immunologically cross-reactive glycoproteins in the molecular weight range of 215,000 to 230,000 have been found on many types of neurons in culture. Using immunohistochemical methods, we have shown that NILE-related glycoproteins are present in neuronal fiber tracts of the developing rat brain. Antibody against the NILE glycoprotein specifically labels processes that appear identical to those recognized by antibodies against the neurofilament triplet of protein

LPXRFa peptide system in the European sea bass: A molecular and immunohistochemical approach.

Gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) is a neuropeptide that suppresses reproduction in birds and mammals by inhibiting GnRH and gonadotropin secretion. GnIH orthologs with a C-terminal LPXRFamide (LPXRFa) motif have been identified in teleost fish. Although recent work also suggests its role in fish reproduction, studies are scarce and controversial, and have mainly focused on cyprinids. In this work we cloned a full-length cDNA encoding an LPXRFa precursor in the European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax. In contrast to other teleosts, the sea bass LPXRFa precursor contains only two putative

Epidemiology, clinical and imaging features of rhombencephalitis caused by L. monocytogenes. A retrospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: To date, few studies have explored the specific risk factors of patients with listeriosis who develop rhombencephalitis, and there is insufficient information regarding imaging findings and clinical symptoms in patients with this disease. This work aimed to analyze the imaging findings associated with L. monocytogenes rhombencephalitis in a cohort of patients with listeriosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study of all declared cases of listeriosis in a tertiary hospital from Granada, Spain, from 2008 to 2021. Risk factors, comorbidities, and

Hemorragic presentation of Listeria Monocytogenes rhombencephalic abscess.

Listeria monocytogenes (LM) bacterium is a cause of central nervous system (CNS) infection and the most common cause of rhombencephalitis in immunocompetent elderly.A prompt identification of this condition should be always desirable, since its clinical manifestations are often unspecific with prodromal symptoms leading to high rates of morbidity and mortality if underestimated.CNS listeriosis magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings are generally not specific. However, in the appropriate clinical setting, focal brainstem hyperintensity on T2-weighted pulse sequences associated with ring-enha

Differentially sensitive neuronal subpopulations in the central nervous system and the formation of hindbrain heterotopias in ethanol-exposed zebrafish.

BACKGROUND: A cardinal feature of prenatal ethanol exposure is CNS damage, resulting in a continuum of neurological and behavioral impairments that are described by the term fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). FASDs are variable and depend on several factors, including the amount, timing, and duration of prenatal ethanol exposure. To enhance interventions for CNS dysfunction, it is necessary to identify ethanol-sensitive neuronal populations and expand the understanding of factors that modify ethanol teratogenesis. METHODS: To investigate the susceptibility of different neuronal subtypes

Endocranial Casts of Pre-Mammalian Therapsids Reveal an Unexpected Neurological Diversity at the Deep Evolutionary Root of Mammals.

The origin and evolution of the mammalian brain has long been the focus of scientific enquiry. Conversely, little research has focused on the palaeoneurology of the stem group of Mammaliaformes, the Permian and Triassic non-mammaliaform Therapsida (NMT). This is because the majority of the NMT have a non-ossified braincase, making the study of their endocranial cast (sometimes called the "fossil brain") problematic. Thus, descriptions of the morphology and size of NMT endocranial casts have been based largely on approximations rather than reliable determination. Accordingly, here we use micro-

Role of Shh in the development of molecularly characterized tegmental nuclei in mouse rhombomere 1.

Hindbrain rhombomeres in general are differentially specified molecularly by unique combinations of Hox genes with other developmental genes. Rhombomere 1 displays special features, including absence of Hox gene expression. It lies within the hindbrain range of the Engrailed genes (En1, En2), controlled by the isthmic organizer via diffusion of FGF8. It is limited rostrally by the isthmus territory, and caudally by rhombomere 2. It is double the normal size of any other rhombomere. Its dorsal part generates the cerebellar hemispheres and its ventral part gives rise to several populations, such
