Preparing for Success: Neural Frontal Theta and Posterior Alpha Dynamics during Action Preparation Predict Flexible Resolution of Cognitive Conflicts.

Cognitive conflicts typically arise in situations that call for sudden changes in our behavior. Resolving cognitive conflicts is challenging and prone to errors. Humans can improve their chances to successfully resolve conflicts by mentally preparing for potential behavioral adjustments. Previous studies indicated that neural theta oscillations (4-7 Hz), as well as alpha oscillations (8-14 Hz), are reflective of cognitive control processes during conflict resolution. However, the role or neural oscillations for conflict preparation is still unclear. Therefore, the aim of the current study was

Early Family Conflict and Behavioral Outcomes in Children from Low-Income Families: The Indirect Effects of Parental Depression and Parenting Practices.

Family conflict has been demonstrated as a risk factor impacting children's mental health and behaviors; however, the mechanisms underlying these connections are unclear. Focusing on 1622 children from low-income families (51.4% boys, 38.3% White, 35.5% Hispanic/Latino, 22.1% African American, 4.1% other), the current study examines the role that maternal depression and parenting behaviors play in the associations between family conflict in early childhood and children's internalizing and externalizing behaviors in early adolescence. Family conflict was positively associated with maternal depr

Intimate Partner Violence and Perception of Partner Hostility During Conflict Among Young Adult Couples.

Romantic partners can be both accurate and biased in their perception of each other's hostile behaviors. In perpetrators and victims of intimate partner violence (IPV), documented deficits in social cognition and hostile attributions could contribute to greater biases. The current study used the truth and bias model to examine accuracy and bias in perception of the partner's hostility during a conflict discussion among young adult couples, and the role of IPV perpetration and victimization in this perception. Young adult couples (n = 178) engaged in a video-recorded conflict discussion. Using

Family functioning, coparenting, and parents' ability to manage conflict in adolescent anorexia nervosa subtypes.

INTRODUCTION: Studies about family functioning in adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN) are conflicting and often do not consider the possible differences between the restricting and binge/purging subtypes (AN-R and AN-B/P). Moreover, an underestimated element is the quality of the coparenting relationship, that is, the level of coordination and agreement between parents, as well as the methods of managing parental conflict. METHOD: The study aims to explore family functioning, coparenting and conflict management in a sample of 60 adolescents with AN-R and AN-B/P and their relations with AN severi

Interplay between the role of DNA methylation in regulating gene expression and TE-silencing in a reptilian methylome.

DNA methylation is a major component of eukaryotic genomes with an important role in the defence against transposable elements, to transcriptionally silence their activity and prevent transposition. DNA methylation also plays a major role in the regulation of gene expression. This dual role can come into conflict, where DNA methylation in gene regulatory regions becomes perturbed due to transposable element transposition, leading to disruption of gene expression. Here, we describe how this conflict is reflected in DNA methylation patterns in the sand lizard genome where there is recent transpo

Midfrontal theta transcranial alternating current stimulation modulates behavioural adjustment after error execution.

Cognitive control during conflict monitoring, error processing, and post-error adjustment appear to be associated with the occurrence of midfrontal theta (MFϴ). While this association is supported by correlational EEG studies, much less is known about the possible causal link between MFϴ and error and conflict processing. In the present study, we aimed to explore the role of band-specific effects in modulating the error system during a conflict resolution. In turn, we delivered transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) at different frequency bands (delta δ, theta θ, alpha α, beta β,

The nature of nurture: disentangling passive genotype-environment correlation from family relationship influences on children's externalizing problems.

The relationship between interparental conflict, hostile parenting, and children's externalizing problems is well established. Few studies, however, have examined the pattern of association underlying this constellation of family and child level variables while controlling for the possible confounding presence of passive genotype-environment correlation. Using the attributes of 2 genetically sensitive research designs, the present study examined associations among interparental conflict, parent-to-child hostility, and children's externalizing problems among genetically related and genetically

Validating sensory conflict theory and mitigating motion sickness in humans with galvanic vestibular stimulation.

Per sensory conflict theory, vestibular sensory information has been proposed to drive motion sickness given deviations from central expectations. However, the consistency of motion sickness with quantitative predictions of manipulated vestibular sensory conflict remains untested. Here, we evaluated motion sickness symptoms within 10 participants exposed to galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) designed to manipulate vestibular sensory conflict during passive physical translations. Using a computational methodology, equal and opposite GVS waveforms were designed to reduce (Beneficial) or incre

Impact of a shared medical decision-making aid on patient decisional conflict regarding human papillomavirus vaccination: a mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) cause several vaccine-preventable cancers, including cervical cancer. In France, HPV vaccination coverage remains low. Decision aids (DAs) can help individuals make informed health choices. This study assessed the impact of an online DA (SOSHPV) on decisional conflict and vaccination intention, and explored user perceptions in real-life contexts. METHODS: A convergent mixed-methods design was used (November 2023-June 2024). The quantitative component included a pre-post questionnaire assessing knowledge, vaccination intention, and decisional conflic

Individuals with epilepsy and a history of comorbid depressive symptoms exhibit disrupted fronto-temporo-limbic connectivity during cognitive conflict encoding.

BACKGROUND: Depressive disorders are associated with impaired cognitive control, yet the neural mechanisms underlying these deficits remain poorly understood. We used stereotactic EEG (sEEG) in individuals with medically refractory epilepsy to determine whether a history of comorbid depressive symptoms was associated with altered behavioral and neural responses encoding cognitive conflict. METHODS: sEEGs were recorded from fronto-temporo-limbic regions in 28 participants (age: 35.4±8.9, female: 15/28) performing a Multi-Source Interference Task (MSIT). Psychiatric histories, neurobehavioral i

Delivering health interventions to women, children, and adolescents in conflict settings: what have we learned from ten country case studies?

Armed conflict disproportionately affects the morbidity, mortality, and wellbeing of women, newborns, children, and adolescents. Our study presents insights from a collection of ten country case studies aiming to assess the provision of sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health and nutrition interventions in ten conflict-affected settings in Afghanistan, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. We found that despite large variations in contexts and decision making processes, antenatal care, basic em

Influences of marital conflict on child adjustment: review of theory and research.

This review summarizes the literature on the relationship between marital conflict and child maladjustment with an emphasis on variables that qualify, explain the association, or both. Following a historical review, the modest findings on the strength of the association between marital conflict and child maladjustment is explored. The definition of marital conflict is clarified through specification of its various dimensions (frequency, intensity, content, resolution). The role of variables that serve to moderate and/or mediate the relationship between marital conflict and child maladjustment

Pediatric Wartime Injuries in Afghanistan and Iraq: What Have We Learned?

The majority of the documented experience in pediatric trauma care during the past decade of conflict is from the inpatient Role 3 mission. Pediatric patients (defined as 14 years of age or less) accounted for 5% to 10% of combat admissions. Care for these patients was resource intensive and mortality rates significantly higher than those seen in pediatric hospitals in the United States. The largest documented experience to date with explosive injuries and massive transfusions in children were reported from this conflict. Improvements in logistic and personnel support was seen throughout the d

Conflict detection and resolution in macaque frontal eye fields.

Stimulus-induced conflicts in decision-making tasks produce both behavioral and neuronal congruency effects. However, how and when conflicts are detected and resolved at the neuronal level remains largely unclear. To address these issues, we recorded from single neurons in the frontal eye fields of two macaques performing a conflict task. Although the temporal dynamics of the neuronal congruency effects are independent of the specific task rules, they are substantially different in target- and distractor-encoding neurons. Conflicts were detected ~100 ms after the conflict-inducing cue (20-30 m

Parenting stress and work-family balance as determinants of parent-child relationship quality in dual-earner families in Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: In Türkiye, as in many countries, the increasing prevalence of dual-earner families has intensified the challenge of balancing employment and childcare responsibilities, often in the absence of adequate institutional or workplace support. This strain can affect family relationships, yet the interplay between work-family balance, parenting stress, and parent-child relationship quality remains underexplored in the Turkish context. This study aims to examine parent-child relationships, parenting stress, and work-family balance in dual-earner families, and to investigate how these proc
