Cervical root resorption associated with guided tissue regeneration: a case report.

Root surface resorption, ankylosis (replacement resorption) and alveolar bone resorption are not uncommon sequelae to periodontal healing in both animal and human trials whether the treatment objective is regenerative, preventive, or conservative. The present report describes a case with progressive cervical root resorption in a patient who received periodontal regenerative treatment with guided tissue regeneration (GTR). A 46-year-old woman was referred for treatment of severe periodontitis. Remaining radiographic attachment was less than 50%. Following a period of 18 months, during which non

Comparative efficacy of stabilized stannous fluoride/sodium hexametaphosphate dentifrice and sodium fluoride/triclosan/copolymer dentifrice for the prevention of periodontitis in xerostomic patients: a 2-year randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The primary objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of a stannous fluoride (SnF2) dentifrice relative to a positive control triclosan dentifrice for prevention of clinical attachment loss (CAL) in xerostomic patients. A secondary objective was to compare the dentifrices for root caries remineralization. METHODS: This was a 2-year, randomized, double-masked, parallel-group study. A 0.454% SnF2/sodium hexametaphosphate dentifrice was tested versus a positive control dentifrice (sodium fluoride/0.30% triclosan/copolymer) in 440 medication-induced xerostomic adults identif

Heavy metals in human primary teeth: some factors influencing the metal concentrations.

Human primary teeth have been used as indicators of heavy metal exposure for several decades, but the knowledge about the influence of factors such as tooth type and the presence of caries and roots on metal concentrations is limited. Samples of tooth powder from more than 1200 Norwegian primary teeth without fillings have been analyzed for lead, zinc and cadmium content, and 554 of them for mercury. The material represents all groups of tooth types (incisors, canines and molars), carious and non-carious teeth, and teeth with and without roots. Here we investigate how tooth group and the prese

Caries Experience in Elderly People Consuming a Milk-Based Drink Nutritional Supplement: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Nutritional supplements have been recommended to cope with malnutrition in elderly persons. In Chile, the Supplementary Nutrition Program for the Elderly (PACAM, for its Spanish acronym) consists in a monthly distribution of a low-fat-milk-based drink that contains 8% sucrose. The aim of this study was to determine whether older persons consuming the milk-based drink have a higher caries experience when compared to those not receiving the supplement. A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Maule Region in Chile. The representative sample comprised two groups: (a) PACAM consumers (CS) (n =

Connective tissue graft technique assuring wide root coverage.

Gingival recession related to periodontal disease or developmental problems can result in root sensitivity, root caries, and esthetically unacceptable root exposures. Consequently, root restorations are performed that often complicate, rather than resolve, the problems created by exposed roots. This article presents a predictable procedure for root coverage on areas of wide denudation in the maxilla and the mandible.

Root perforations: aetiology, management strategies and outcomes. The hole truth.

The purpose of this clinical article is to emphasise that root perforations can occur both during and after endodontic treatment. These reduce the chance of a successful treatment outcome and can jeopardise the survival of the tooth. The aetiology and diagnosis of root perforations are described. The article also focusses on the non-surgical and surgical management of root perforations and describes how selection of the appropriate treatment depends on an accurate diagnosis.

Plaque pH and microflora of dental plaque on sound and carious root surfaces.

Given the hypothesis that root caries is the result of acid formation by acidogenic micro-organisms, the present study was performed to relate sucrose-induced pH response of dental plaque on root surfaces to the microbial composition of the overlying plaque. Seventeen caries-active elderly Chinese with poor oral hygiene and with both sound and carious root surfaces were examined. Plaque pH was measured before and up to one hour after a controlled sucrose mouthrinse. Plaque samples for microbiologic analyses were collected from 2 sound and 2 or 3 carious pH-measurement sites in each subject. Th

[Endodontic treatment of primary teeth. Pulp exposure and pulp necrosis].

With management of the deep caries in primary teeth we have to take account into the coping strategies of the patient and the state of the development of the dentition. That's why in most cases a root canal treatment of primary incisors or even a pulpotomy is not indicated. Often Intellectual Decision Not To Restore is a good alternative for treatment of deep caries in primary incisors. In deep caries lesions of primary canines and molars preferably minimal invasive techniques as indirect pulp capping are performed. In case of a exposure, the dentist can choose between several types of treatme

Transmission electron microscopy of cementum crystals correlated with Ca and F distribution in normal and carious human root surfaces.

Root-surface caries, like enamel caries, develops as a subsurface type of mineral loss. Very little is known about the composition of the surface zone covering the body of the lesion, and the ultrastructure and composition of carious cementum are not known. The aim of this study was to correlate the ultrastructure and arrangement of the cementum crystals with the distribution of fluoride and calcium in root cementum from human teeth with sound, unexposed, or exposed root surfaces as well as in early stages of root-surface caries. Microradiographically, unexposed specimens showed a relatively h

OBJECTIVES: Enterococcus faecalis is a gram positive diplococci, highly versatile and a normal commensal of the gut microbiome. Resistance to vancomycin is a serious issue in various health-care setting exhibited by vancomycin resistant Enterococci (VRE) due to the alteration in the peptidoglycan synthesis pathway. This study is thus aimed to detect the VRE from the patients with root caries from the clinical isolates of E. faecalis and to evaluate the in-silico interactions between vanA and the Aegles marmelos bio-compounds. METHODS: E. faecalis was phenotypically characterized from 20 root

Status of retained deciduous second molars in subjects with agenesis of second premolars in relation to age.

AIM: To evaluate the presence and status of retained DM2 without permanent successors in relation to age. BACKGROUND: Preservation of retained deciduous second molars (DM2) can be applied to treat congenital absence of second premolars (PM2). However, the consequences of caries and progressing root resorption or infraocclusion may affect their survival. METHODS: Panoramic radiographs of individuals >10 years of age with agenesis of at least one PM2 were evaluated and divided into three groups according to age. Measurement of the shrinkage of natural and simulated lesions on root surfaces using CP-OCT.

OBJECTIVES: Demineralized root dentin and cementum is made up of mostly collagen that shrinks significantly upon dehydration or drying with air. During remineralization mineral is deposited on the outside of the lesion creating a highly mineralized surface layer that inhibits diffusion, arrests the lesion and prevents shrinkage. Previous studies suggest that active root caries lesions manifest shrinkage, while arrested lesions no longer manifest shrinkage upon dehydration. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that the shrinkage of root caries lesions can be monitored during dehydration

Comparing approaches to determining poor oral health among older adults in a national survey.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the clinical validity of the three approaches in residential care facility residents. BACKGROUND: In NZ residential care facilities, the interRAI assessment tool is used by trained registered nurses for assessing oral status when new residents are admitted, but its validity has been questioned. Although Locker's global oral health item has been used to measure oral health in surveys and health services research, it is not routinely used in care facilities, yet its clinical validity has been demonstrated in population-based samples.
