The increase of T lymphocytes in infectious mononucleosis (IM) is shown to be due to an increase of 'active' (early erythrocyte rosette-forming) T cells: 67.2 +/- 18.3% of IM lymphocytes were 'active' versus 34.7 +/- 14.9% of control lymphocytes. IM was also associated with an increase of lymphocytes demonstrating E receptors at 20 degrees C (E20-R). This phenomenon was not related to the heterophile antibody titre and could not be demonstrated with ox or rabbit erythrocytes. In vitro immunological tests showed that patients with pre-eclampsia are characterized by a greater degree of lymphocyte hyporesponsiveness to mitogens during pregnancy than normotensive controls. Enumeration of a subpopulation of T cells with receptors for the Fc portion of IgG (T gamma) in the peripheral blood of 14 normal subjects and 43 patients with leprosy was undertaken. Tuberculoid leprosy patients showed normal levels of T gamma cells. In contrast, bacillary positive patients with lepromatous leprosy revealed a significant reduction of circulating T gamma cells (p less than 0.001).

Rosetting techniques were used to estimate T and B cell subpopulations in the peripheral blood in patients with treated and untreated adult coeliac disease and in control subjects. In patients with untreated coeliac disease, T cell numbers were significantly lower than in controls or treated patients, although there was no difference in total lymphocyte counts.
