Epidemiology of Rugby-Related Injuries Presenting to the Emergency Department: A 10-Year Review.

Background Rugby is a popular contact sport played with little to no protective clothing. There exist few comprehensive studies investigating emergency department (ED) visit patterns for rugby-related injuries. We hypothesize that male athletes remain the most common patient demographic to present to the ED with rugby-related injuries and that the number of patients diagnosed with soft tissue injuries such as sprains and strains decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System database was examined for rugby injuries from January 2012 throug

Multisensory perception is not influenced by previous concussion history in retired rugby union players.

BACKGROUND: To assess whether concussion history adversely affects multisensory integration, we compared susceptibility to the Sound-Induced Flash Illusion (SIFI) in retired professional rugby players compared to controls. METHODS: Retired professional rugby players ((N = 58) and retired international rowers (N = 26) completed a self-report concussion history questionnaire and the SIFI task. Susceptibility to the SIFI (i.e., perceiving two flashes in response to one flash paired with two beeps) was assessed at three stimulus onset asynchronies (70 ms, 150 ms or 230 ms).Logistic mixed-effects

White Matter Abnormalities in Retired Professional Rugby League Players with a History of Concussion.

The topic of potential long-term neurological consequences from having multiple concussions during a career in collision sports is controversial. We sought to investigate white matter microstructure using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in retired professional Australian National Rugby League (NRL) players (n = 11) with a history of multiple self-reported concussions compared with age- and education-matched controls (n = 13) who have had no history of brain trauma. Diffusion-weighted images were acquired with a Siemens 3T scanner. All participants completed a clinical interview. There were no s

The Effect of Sub-Concussive Impacts during a Rugby Tackling Drill on Brain Function.

Concussion is known to detrimentally affect brain health. Rugby tackles commonly occur with high collision force between tackler and ball carrier, and low impact head contact is not uncommon. Cognitive deficits following a bout of soccer ball heading has been attributed to the impact and termed sub-concussion. Although soccer ball heading studies provide evidence for acute effects of sub-concussion, it is unknown whether this phenomenon occurs following rugby tackles. This study investigates the acute effects of rugby tackles on brain function and balance in rugby players. Twenty-six volunteer

Prevalence of sleep disorders and sleep problems in an elite super rugby union team.

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of sleep disorders in an elite rugby union team using in-laboratory polysomnography (PSG) and sleep questionnaires. Twenty-five elite rugby union players underwent a night of PSG during the "off-season" of the Super Rugby competition to assess their sleep. Of interest were measurements that detected the presence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA; apnea-hypopnea index ≥5 events/hr) and the presence of moderate-severe periodic leg movements during sleep (PLMs; ≥15 events/hr). Players completed sleep-related questionnaires to assess daytime slee

A Video Analysis of Use of the New 'Concussion Interchange Rule' in the National Rugby League.

The National Rugby League (NRL) in Australia introduced a new 'concussion interchange rule' (CIR) in 2014, whereby a player suspected of having sustained a concussion can be removed from play, and assessed, without an interchange being tallied against the player's team. We conducted a video analysis, describing player and injury characteristics, situational factors, concussion signs, and return to play for each "CIR" event for the 2014 season. There were 167 reported uses of the CIR. Apparent loss of consciousness/unresponsiveness was observed in 32% of cases, loss of muscle tone in 54%, clutc

Head Acceleration Event Probabilities During Standardised Contact Drills in Academy Men's Rugby League.

This study investigated head acceleration event (HAE) probabilities between common contact-drills in rugby league. Fifteen professional male academy players participated in three training sessions, completing standardised contact-drills while wearing custom-fitted iMGs, all sessions were filmed. HAE data (peak linear acceleration and peak angular acceleration) were captured, synchronised, and processed alongside video data. Binomial logistic regression and ordinal mixed-effect regression models were used to calculate overall and exceedance probabilities. Data included 1402 (93 ± 50 per player)

Effects of Rugby Training Exposure on Knee-Jerk Reflex Magnitude: A Feasibility Study.

Background This study aimed to quantify the patellar reflex and assess how rugby training level influences reflex magnitude, asymmetry, and sensitivity, using a novel and accessible method for patellar reflex quantification. Methods A novel force transducer and ankle-mounted accelerometer were used to measure raw acceleration, which was converted to lower-limb angular velocity in 64 male participants from four rugby player groups (control, amateur, semi-professional, and professional). Each participant underwent 20 reflex trials per leg. Reflex magnitude was derived from peak angular velocity.

Concussion in Australian community rugby union part 1: a nationwide concussion management procedure.

BACKGROUND: The prevention and management of concussion is an ongoing challenge for sporting bodies worldwide. In community-level sport, there is a lack of robust data to support decision making around risk and recovery. This paper outlines a new Concussion Management Procedure (CMP) introduced to community rugby for managing concussion (specifically on-field management of suspected concussion), identifying the definitions, design, and inclusion parameters of the procedure. APPROACH: In response to a community and sport need for direction on managing community players with concussion, Rugby A
