Seroepidemiology of Toxoplasma gondii in wild ruminants in Spain.

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic zoonosis caused by Toxoplasma gondii which infects warm-blooded species worldwide. Humans can be infected through ingestion of tissue cysts from raw or undercooked meat, including game meat. A nationwide large-scale cross-sectional study was conducted to assess exposure to T. gondii in seven wild ruminant species in Spain. A total of 2,040 serum samples from 77 sampling sites randomly distributed in the five bioregions (BRs) covering mainland Spain were tested for antibodies against T. gondii using the modified agglutination test. The overall seroprevalence was 22.

A Brief Review of Diagnosis of Small Ruminants Brucellosis.

Brucellosis caused by bacteria of the genus of Brucella remains a major zoonosis in the wide world, which is an infectious disease with a severe economic impact on animal husbandry and public health. The genus of Brucella includes ten species and the most prevalent is Brucella melitensis. The diagnosis of Brucella melitensis ruminant brucellosis is based on bacteriological and immunological tests. The use of vaccines and the false-positive serological reactions (FPSR) caused by other cross-reacting bacteria represent the immunological contexts. This complex context results in the development o

Rift Valley fever and Brucella spp. in ruminants, Somalia.

BACKGROUND: Fourteen-years after the last Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus (RVFV) outbreak, Somalia still suffers from preventable transboundary diseases. The tradition of unheated milk consumption and handling of aborted materials poses a public health risk for zoonotic diseases. Limited data are available on RVF and Brucella spp. in Somali people and their animals. Hence, this study has evaluated the occurrence of RVFV and Brucella spp. antibodies in cattle, goats and sheep sera from Afgoye and Jowhar districts of Somalia. METHODS: Serum samples from 609 ruminants (201 cattle, 203 goats and 20

Research progress of rumen hydrogen sulfide production in ruminants.

Rumen fermentation can produce hydrogen sulfide (H2 S), and H2 S can be rapidly absorbed by the intestinal wall in nature. If excessive H2 S was produced in rumen, it might be toxic to ruminants. This article reviews the research progress of toxicity of H2 S, rumen H2 S production pathway and its influential factors to lay a foundation for further research and application of rumen H2 S-producing regulation in ruminant.

Paramphistomosis of Ruminants: An Emerging Parasitic Disease in Europe.

Whilst historically regarded as being of minor importance in European livestock, recent evidence suggests that the prevalence of paramphistomosis is greater than that of fasciolosis in parts of the UK. In order to address this emerging threat to ruminant farming systems, and associated risks for food security posed by rumen fluke infection, it is imperative that we develop a better understanding of the basic biology of this parasite and how it interacts with its ruminant host. In this Opinion article we review recent progress in tracking the spread of rumen fluke infection in Europe, and propo

The role of zoonotic chlamydial agents in ruminants abortion.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Enzootic abortion of ewes (EAE) is caused by infection of sheep and goats by Chlamydia abortus bacterium. Chlamydial abortion in bovine could occur by Chlamydia abortus, Chlamydia psittaci and Chlamydia pecorum. C. psittaci is the causative agent of psittacosis or ornithosis disease in humans and birds. It also causes acute pneumonia in cattle and sheep. The present study aimed at surveying the role of chlamydial agents in ruminants abortion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 117 aborted material samples (Cotyledon, liver, spleen, and abomasal contents of fetus) fro

The etiology of digital dermatitis in ruminants: recent perspectives.

Digital dermatitis (DD) is a multifactorial polymicrobial infectious disease originally described in dairy cattle, but is increasingly recognized in beef cattle, sheep, and more recently, elk and goats. Clinical bovine lesions typically appear on the plantar surface of the hind foot from the interdigital space and heel bulb to the accessory digits, with a predilection for skin-horn junctions. Lesions present as a painful ulcerative acute or chronic inflammatory process with differing degrees of severity. This variability reflects disease progression and results in a number of different clinica

Transmission patterns of Fasciola hepatica to ruminants in Sweden.

Transmission patterns of Fasciola hepatica were investigated on beef cattle (n=3) and sheep (n=3) farms in Sweden between 2011 and 2012. The dynamics of fluke infection, particularly estimated time of infection, were screened each grazing season by ELISA detection of antibodies in lambs (n=94) and first grazing season calves (n=61). Colostral transfer of F. hepatica antibodies from seropositive ewes was detected in sheep up to 11 weeks of age. In sheep, the estimated time of infection differed significantly between herds and years. Typical 'winter infection' was observed on two sheep farms in

Copper imbalances in ruminants and humans: unexpected common ground.

Ruminants are more vulnerable to copper deficiency than humans because rumen sulfide generation lowers copper availability from forage, increasing the risk of conditions such as swayback in lambs. Molybdenum-rich pastures promote thiomolybdate (TM) synthesis and formation of unabsorbable Cu-TM complexes, turning risk to clinical reality (hypocuprosis). Selection pressures created ruminant species with tolerance of deficiency but vulnerability to copper toxicity in alien environments, such as specific pathogen-free units. By contrast, cases of copper imbalance in humans seemed confined to rare

Distribution of the lingual lymphoid tissue in domestic ruminants.

The distribution and organisation of the intralingual lymphoid tissue was studied in sheep, goat and cattle. For each species, the tongues of two animals were harvested and divided in sample blocks extending over the total surface of the tongue. With 2.5 mm intervals, ten serial histological sections were made for conventional histological staining (haematoxylin-eosin, Van Gieson, Masson's trichrome) and immunohistochemical staining of lymphoid cells (anti-CD3, anti-CD21, anti-CD45). Lymphocytes were scattered in the subepithelial propria-submucosa and in the connective tissue cores of the lin

Peste des petits ruminants: a suitable candidate for eradication?

This year will see the final announcement, accompanied by much justifiable celebration, of the eradication from the wild of rinderpest, the 'cattle plague' that has been with us for so many centuries. The only known rinderpest virus (RPV) remaining is in a relatively small number of laboratories around the world, and in the stockpiles of vaccine held on a precautionary basis. As we mark this achievement, only the second virus ever eradicated through human intervention, it seems a good time to look at rinderpest's less famous cousin, peste des petits ruminants ('the plague of small ruminants')

Gene expression in elongating and gastrulating embryos from ruminants.

In ruminants, more than 30% of the embryonic losses observed after artificial insemination (AI) have an early origin, coincident with a marked elongation of the trophoblast which occurs before implantation. Several observations provide clear evidence that early elongation of the conceptus relies on cell multiplication, cell growth and cell shape remodeling. Recent results indicating an intense multiplication of a non-fully differentiated trophoblast, which still expresses some epiblast genes, has to be considered at the onset of elongation. It has also been shown in the last two years that gen

Encephalitic listeriosis in ruminants: immunohistochemistry as a diagnostic tool.

A retrospective analysis of 42 ruminants (sheep, goats and cattle) with suspected meningo-encephalitis was performed. The clinical findings and the post-mortem results of the animals have been specified. Bacteriological culture, Gram's stain and Listeria-specific immunohistochemistry were performed in order to confirm the diagnosis of these cases. The results of the different methods were evaluated for the detection of listerial antigens. Bacteriological culture was positive in 28.5% of the cases. In 47.6% of the cases, Gram-positive bacteria were found and 80.9% of the cases were immunohistoc

Metabolic adaptation to experimentally increased glucose demand in ruminants.

Four Dorset wethers were studied in a Latin square design with 72-h periods to determine the metabolic adaptations that occur in support of increased glucose demand in ruminants. Wethers injected at 8-h intervals with excipient or a total of .5, 1.0, or 2.0 g/d of phlorizin excreted an average of 0, 72.7, 97.9, and 98.5 g/d of glucose into the urine, respectively. Both acute (2 to 24 h after the first injection) and chronic (8-h intervals from 8 to 72 h after the first injection) adaptations of plasma variables to phlorizin treatment were assessed. Concentrations of plasma glucose decreased li

Prevalence of ectoparasites of small ruminants in Nsukka, Nigeria.

Over a period of one year (January 1983 to December 1983), an investigation was mounted to determine common ectoparasitic infestation of small ruminants in selected farms in Nsukka, Nigeria. The species identified in goats included Ctenocephalides canis, Boophilius decolouratus and Amblyomma variegatum lides while those recovered from parasitized sheep were Ctenocephalides canis and Damalinia ovis. Out of a total of 148 sheep and goats examined for ectoparasites, 68 (45.95%) were infested. A further breakdown of this figure shows that 10 (18.52%) out of a total number of 54 sheep screened were

Trace element deficiencies and fertility in ruminants: a review.

Various minerals (copper, cobalt, selenium, manganese, iodine, zinc, and iron) can influence reproductive performance of ruminants. Reproductive failure may be induced by deficiencies of single or combined trace elements and by imbalances. This review is focused on maladjustments of trace elements leading to impaired breeding performance. Opinion is diverse as to the existence of various reproductive disturbances from either a severe copper depletion or a marginal dietary copper deficiency. Field experience suggests that administration of cobalt to ruminants on cobalt-deficient diets improves
