Children's height, health and appetite influence mothers' weaning decisions in rural Senegal.

BACKGROUND: In many developing countries, breastfed children have a lower nutritional status than those weaned from 12 months of age. Reverse causality, that is, earlier weaning of healthy and well-nourished children, is a possible explanation. METHODS: Maternal reasons for early and late weaning were investigated in a cohort of 485 rural Senegalese children using structured interviews during two rounds at the ages of 18--28 and 23--33 months, respectively. Length, weight and height were assessed, and dates of weaning were monitored. RESULTS: The mean duration of breastfeeding was 24.1 month

Effects of prenatal antibiotic treatment on early infant health: a retrospective study in a rural health facility in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Infant mortality remains a major developmental challenge in many low-income countries. Epidemiological evidence suggests that infant acquisition of maternal microbiome is essential for programming of immunity and metabolism. As such, irrational maternal antibiotic use may affect infant health. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to determine the effects of prenatal antibiotic use on early postnatal life (90 days) in a low-income community in Ghana. METHODOLOGY: The study was a retrospective study of 412 mother-baby pair medical records in a low-income community in rural Ghana.

Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD): Implications for health and nutritional issues among rural children in China.

In China, with fast economic growth, health and nutrition status among the rural population has shown significant improvement in the past decades. On the other hand, burden of non-communicable diseases and prevalence of related risk factors such as overweight and obesity has also increased. Among rural children, the double burden of malnutrition and emerging overweight and obesity has been neglected so far. According to the theory of Developmental Origin of Health and Diseases (DOHaD), malnutrition, including both undernutrition (stunting and wasting) and over-nutrition (overweight and obesity

Social relationships and health: the meaning of social "connectedness" and how it relates to health concerns for rural Scottish adolescents.

Adolescence has been posited as an important period for the onset of mental health problems and for the need to adapt successfully to many psychosocial changes. The assumption has been made that social belonging is both a health-related goal and an antidote for other sorts of emotional crises, but there is little research on how normal adolescents themselves view connections between social relationships and their physical and mental health. This qualitative study examines how social connectedness represents both a content and process variable in northern Scottish young people's discussion of t

Urban-rural differences in health behaviors and cognition: Two Taiwanese older cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Although urban-rural differences in dementia prevalence have been widely reported, little is known about whether vascular risk factors and health behaviors relate differently to cognitive function across urban and rural populations. This study investigated urban-rural differences in these factors and their associations with cognition. METHODS: We analyzed data on demographics, vascular risk factors, lifestyle factors, laboratory measures, and comprehensive neuropsychological assessments. Suboptimal cognition was defined as >1 SD below appropriate norms; predictors were examined us

Rural health disadvantages in the United States: Evidence from nationally representative data.

A gap in mortality rates between rural and urban areas emerged in the late 1990s as rural residents began dying at a higher rate than their urban counterparts. This mortality gap has been widening ever since. The growing mortality gap is pronounced among prime working-age adults (ages 25-54), which has important implications for rural health, productivity, and economic development. Despite the heightened mortality rates in rural areas in recent decades, there is still a limited understanding of the health-related mechanisms fueling this worsening rural-urban mortality disparity. Using national

Rural-Urban Differences in Excessive Alcohol Use and Select Mental Health Conditions.

PURPOSE: Previous research demonstrates that excessive alcohol use behaviors, alcohol-related harms, and the prevalence of mental health conditions disproportionately impact rural communities, with mixed findings on rural-urban differences in behavior uptake. This study aims to examine rural-urban differences in the prevalence of excessive alcohol use among individuals with selected self-reported mental health conditions. METHODS: The 2021 and 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) data was used to obtain prevalence estimates for self-reported past-year any mental illness (AMI),

Bridging the gap: health equity in women's urologic care across rural settings.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Health equity has emerged as a priority in urology, as disparities in access to care and health outcomes are driven by social, structural, and geographic factors. Women living in rural communities represent a particularly vulnerable population, given the high prevalence of chronic urologic conditions that impact quality of life and require longitudinal management. Conditions such as urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, recurrent urinary tract infections, and pelvic organ prolapse are common among women yet remain under-recognized and undertreated in rural settings. Healthism, rural individualism and self-help: youth mental health in Northwest Tasmania.

Rural Australian youth exhibit high rates of mental ill-health, exacerbated by reduced access to mental health services. While the need for innovative solutions is well-established rural youth themselves are frequently excluded from the dialogue, creating a significant gap in evidence and the development of relevant service provision that reflects young people's lived experiences. Drawing on the concepts of individualism and healthism and research highlighting the continuing importance of relationships and trust in the lives of young people in a digital society, we aim to better understand how

Valuing health effects from the industrial air pollution in rural Tianjin, China.

High concentrations of air pollutants such as total suspended particulates (TSP) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) have serious impacts on nearby populations. In this paper, a survey of rural Tianjin residents' willingness-to-pay for health improvement was reported on, and the MBDC (multiple bounded discrete choice) model was adopted to study the respondents' willingness-to-pay to prevent respiratory illnesses. The results showed that the willingness-to-pay for health improvement was affected by respondents' health condition, work situation and environmental awareness, but not by personal habits, such

Detection, referral and control of diabetes and hypertension in the rural Eastern Cape Province of South Africa by community health outreach workers in the rural primary healthcare project: Health in Every Hut.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases, mainly cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory diseases, are responsible for approximately 63% of all deaths occurring worldwide in any given year. The majority of these deaths have occurred in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The latest World Health Organization (WHO) report shows that the increase in diabetes is also most pronounced in the LMICs. The South African Labour and Development Research Unit estimated a 9% prevalence within the adult population in 2016. In the Eastern Cape Province, hypertensive heart disease
