Prognostic Indicators for Intracranial Metastases from Pancreatic Cancer: A Population-Based Retrospective Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Database Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The natural history, treatment options, and clinical outcomes of pancreatic metastases to the brain remain largely unknown. Here, we seek to investigate characteristics that influence OS in pancreatic metastases to the brain. METHODS: This is a population-based retrospective study of OS in 508 patients with pancreatic metastases to the brain using the SEER database. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were utilized, and a predictive nomogram was developed. RESULTS: There were 508 patients identified for this study, with a median OS of 2 months. In the univariate an

Establishment of the diagnostic and prognostic nomograms for pancreatic cancer with bone metastasis.

Bone metastasis (BM) is rare in patients with pancreatic cancer (PC), but often neglected at the initial diagnosis and treatment. Bone metastasis is associated with a worse prognosis. This study was aimed to perform a large data analysis to determine the predictors and prognostic factors of BM in PC patients and to develop two nomograms to quantify the risks of BM and the prognosis of PC patients with BM. In the present study, we reviewed and collected the data of patients who were diagnosed as PC from 2010 to 2015 in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Univariate

Prognostic model for the exemption of adjuvant chemotherapy in stage IIIC endometrial cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to develop a nomogram to predict the survival for stage IIIC endometrial cancer (EC) patients with adjuvant radiotherapy (ART) alone and personalize recommendations for the following adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT). METHODS: In total, 746 stage IIIC EC patients with ART alone were selected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registry. Cox regression analysis was performed to identify independent risk factors. A nomogram was developed accordingly, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and C-index were implemented t

A novel LASSO-derived prognostic model predicting survival for non-small cell lung cancer patients with M1a diseases.

INTRODUCTION: The current American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) M1a staging of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) encompasses a wide disease spectrum, showing diverse prognosis. METHODS: Patients who diagnosed in an earlier period formed the training cohort, and those who diagnosed thereafter formed the validation cohort. Kaplan-Meier analysis was performed for the training cohort by dividing the M1a stage into three subgroups: (I) malignant pleural effusion (MPE) or malignant pericardial effusion (MPCE); (II) separate tumor nodules in contralateral lung (STCL); and (III) pleural tumor no

A web-based prediction model for overall survival of elderly patients with early renal cell carcinoma: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: The number of elderly patients with early renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is on the rise. However, there is still a lack of accurate prediction models for the prognosis of early RCC in elderly patients. It is necessary to establish a new nomogram to predict the prognosis of elderly patients with early RCC. METHODS: The data of patients aged above 65 years old with TNM stage I and II RCC were downloaded from the SEER database between 2010 and 2018. The patients from 2010 to 2017 were randomly assigned to the training cohort (n = 7233) and validation cohort (n = 3024). Patient data in 20

Stage Presentation, Care Patterns, Treatment Outcomes, and Impact of Radiotherapy on Overall Survival for Adrenocortical Carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a rare cancer with few well-powered studies regarding epidemiology or outcomes and even fewer studies to guide an evidence-based management approach. The effect of radiation therapy (RT) is particularly understudied and remains unclear, outside of general oncologic principles. We sought to describe current care patterns in the management of ACC and how these practices affect survival outcomes using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. METHODS: Patients with ACC who could be staged by the American Joint Committee on Ca

Studying the association between breast cancer and renal cell carcinoma.

PURPOSE: There are case reports of patients with both primary breast cancer (BC) and renal cell carcinoma (RCC). We explore the association between these two malignancies using SEER population data and our institutional records. METHODS: We studied the association between BC and RCC in the 2000-2016 Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. We then reviewed our hospital records of patients with both BC and RCC and collected information including personal and family history of cancers, genetic testing, and patient outcomes. RESULTS: Of the 813,477 females diagnosed with BC

Estimating Chemotherapy Use Among Patients With a Prior Primary Cancer Diagnosis Using SEER-Medicare Data.

Cancer treatment studies commonly exclude patients with prior primary cancers due to difficulties in ascertaining for which site treatment is intended. Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare patients 65 years and older diagnosed with an index colon or rectal cancer (CRC) or female breast cancer (BC) between 2004 and 2013 were included. Chemotherapy, defined as "any chemotherapy" and more restrictively as "chemotherapy with confirmatory diagnoses," was ascertained based on claims data within 6 months of index cancer diagnosis by prior cancer history. Any chemotherapy use was sligh

Impact of Prior Cancer History on the Clinical Outcomes in Advanced Breast Cancer: A Propensity Score-Adjusted, Population-Based Study.

PURPOSE: Despite the rapid growing of cancer survivors, prior cancer history is a commonly adopted exclusion criterion. Whether prior cancer will impact the survival of patients with advanced breast cancer (ABC) remains uncertain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with ABC diagnosed between 2004 and 2010 were identified using Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Timing, stage, and type were used to characterize prior cancer. Multivariable analyses using propensity score-adjusted Cox regression and competing risk regression were conducted to evaluate the prognostic effect

Risk of subsequent malignant neoplasms after an index potentially-human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated cancers.

BACKGROUND: Since the number of cancer survivors is increasing, it is imperative that we better understand the long-term consequences of these survivors. We assessed the risk of developing a second primary malignant neoplasm (SPMN) after an index potentially-HPV-associated cancers (P-HPV-AC). METHODS: We constructed a population-based cohort of patients with P-HPV-AC using Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results registry data (2000-2015). We limited patients to those with invasive P-HPV-AC [cervical, vagina, vulva, penile, anal, and oropharynx] based on the International Classification of

Genitourinary paraganglioma: Demographic, pathologic, and clinical characteristics in the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results database (2000-2012).

BACKGROUND: Extra-adrenal paragangliomas (PGLs) are infrequent, benign, and neuroendocrine tumors arising from chromaffin cells of the autonomic nervous system. Most PGLs are sporadic, but up to 32% are associated with inherited syndromes such as neurofibromatosis type 1, von Hippel-Lindau disease, and familial PGL. Although most PGLs develop above the umbilicus, they have been reported in the genitourinary (GU) tract. Owing to the paucity of literature on the rates of GU PGL, the objective of our study is to describe the demographic, pathologic, and clinical characteristics of GU PGL, and com

Surgery does not adversely affect survival in primary gastrointestinal lymphoma.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of surgery on gastrointestinal lymphoma. METHODS: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database was queried from 1973 to 2005. RESULTS: A total of 17,222 cases of PGIL were identified. The overall incidence of PGIL was approximately 1.505 cases per 100,000. A significantly increasing incidence for PGIL was observed (APC = +4.67, P < 0.05). In the cases for which treatment data was available, resection occurred in roughly half of the patients. In univariate analysis, surgical extirpation did not improve survival (47 months vs. 76 months, P <

Generalizability of the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results registry population: factors relevant to epidemiologic and health care research.

To assess the generalizability of the population included in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) tumor registries to the overall United States population, we compared the population of the 198 SEER counties to the population of the 2882 non-SEER counties regarding sociodemographic factors, physician availability, and availability of pertinent hospital resources. The population residing within the SEER areas is more affluent, has lower unemployment, and is substantially more urban than the remainder of the U.S. population (p < 0.001 for each). The SEER areas have fewer genera

Machine learning nomograms for gastric cancer: addressing data limitations in SEER-based models.

The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database is widely used to develop machine learning prognostic models for gastric cancer, yet data limitations restrict their clinical utility. We critically appraise the recent multicenter machine learning study by Guan et al., which reported superior prognostication compared with TNM staging, and identify eight methodological concerns: chemotherapy sensitivity of only 68% with systematic under capture of one-third of treated patients; complete loss of regimen-specific information that prevents distinction between curative perioperative t
