SAD rats: Effects of short photoperiod and carbohydrate consumption on sleep, liver steatosis, and the gut microbiome in diurnal grass rats.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a recurrent depression triggered by exposure to short photoperiods, with a subset of patients reporting hypersomnia, increased appetite, and carbohydrate craving. Dysfunction of the microbiota - gut - brain axis is frequently associated with depressive disorders, but its role in SAD is unknown. Nile grass rats (Arvicanthis niloticus) are potentially useful for exploring the pathophysiology of SAD, as they are diurnal and have been found to exhibit anhedonia and affective-like behavior in response to short photoperiods. Further, given grass rats have been fo

Heightened false alarms of conditioned threat predict longitudinal increases in GAD and SAD symptoms over the first year of college.

Lab-based fear-conditioning studies have repeatedly implicated exaggerated threat reactivity to benign (unreinforced) stimuli as concurrent markers of clinical anxiety, but little work has examined the strength of false alarms as a longitudinal predictor of anxiety problems. As such, we tested whether heightened false alarms of conditioned threat assessed in participants' first semester of college predicted second-semester symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) - two anxiety conditions that are common in college students, have been associated with exce

Aberrant attentional bias to sad faces in depression and the role of stressful life events: Evidence from an eye-tracking paradigm.

Attentional biases are thought to be involved in the etiopathogenesis of depressive disorders. Recent studies indicate eye-tracking techniques could overcome methodological issues of traditional reaction time bias measures and be used to reliably quantify biases in attention. In the current study, 50 participants with a current depressive disorder and 31 never-depressed individuals performed a free-viewing eye-tracking paradigm with two counterbalanced blocks; one contained four-by-four arrays of happy and neutral faces, the other arrays of sad and neutral faces. Average dwell-times were analy

Pathological changes in hippocampal neuronal circuits underlie age-associated neurodegeneration and memory loss: positive clue toward SAD.

Among vertebrates hippocampus forms the major component of the brain in consolidating information from short-term memory to long-term memory. Aging is considered as the major risk factor for memory impairment in sporadic Alzheimer's disease (SAD) like pathology. Present study thus aims at investigating whether age-specific degeneration of neuronal-circuits in hippocampal formation (neural-layout of Subiculum-hippocampus proper-dentate gyrus (DG)-entorhinal cortex (EC)) results in cognitive impairment. Furthermore, the neuroprotective effect of Resveratrol (RSV) was attempted to study in the fo

The Can-SAD study: a randomized controlled trial of the effectiveness of light therapy and fluoxetine in patients with winter seasonal affective disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Light therapy and antidepressants have shown comparable efficacy in separate studies of seasonal affective disorder treatment, but few studies have directly compared the two treatments. This study compared the effectiveness of light therapy and an antidepressant within a single trial. METHOD: This double-blind, randomized, controlled trial was conducted in four Canadian centers over three winter seasons. Patients met DSM-IV criteria for major depressive disorder with a seasonal (winter) pattern and had scores > or = 23 on the 24-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. After a baseli

[Basic characteristics of bacterial meningitis in patients treated at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases in Novi Sad during a 2-year period].

Although known for centuries, bacterial meningitis is a disease which still causes death and invalidity no matter there are modern diagnostic methods and therapeutic modalities. Our investigation included 45 patients treated for a purulent meningitis during a two-year period at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases in Novi Sad. Most patients suffered from meningococcal meningitis. The onset of the disease was sporadic, during winter and spring, and there were no contact cases. Most patients were 2-3 and 8-15 years of age. Patients with pneumococcal meningitis had the most serious clinical picture

Sad emotion processing-related theta oscillation patterns link suicide attempt to childhood trauma in depression: evidence from MEG.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe mood disorder with genetic and environmental interactions. Subtypes with childhood trauma (CT) tend to have higher rates of suicide attempt (SA). The amygdala (AMY) and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) are integral to the neurocircuitry underlying emotional processing, with dysregulation of these regions being posited as a pathophysiological hallmark both in CT and SA. However, the specific neural mechanisms linking CT and SA are unclear. Here, we examined local neural oscillatory patterns and interregional connectivity within mPFC and AMY during sad

Identification of a receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor CP-724714 inhibits SADS-CoV related swine diarrhea coronaviruses infection in vitro.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020 has caused unprecedented panic among all mankind, pointing the major importance of effective treatment. Since the emergence of the swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV) at the end of 2017, multiple reports have indicated that the bat-related SADS-CoV possesses a potential threat for cross-species transmission. Vaccines and antiviral drugs development deserve more attention. In this study, we found that the HER2 phosphorylation inhibitor (CP-724714) inhibited SADS-CoV infection in a dose-dependent manner. Forgetful, sad and old: Do vascular cognitive impairment and depression share a common pre-disease network and how is it impacted by ageing?

Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) and depression frequently coexist in geriatric populations and reciprocally increase disease risks. We assert that a shared pre-disease state of the psycho-immune-neuroendocrine (PINE) network model mechanistically explains bidirectional associations between VCI and depression. Five pathophysiological sub-networks are identified that are shared by VCI and depression: neuroinflammation, kynurenine pathway imbalance, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis overactivity, impaired neurotrophic support and cerebrovascular dysfunction. These do not act independe

New Nitric Oxide Donor NCX 1443: Therapeutic Effects on Pulmonary Hypertension in the SAD Mouse Model of Sickle Cell Disease.

Nitric oxide (NO) donors may be useful for treating pulmonary hypertension (PH) complicating sickle cell disease (SCD), as endogenous NO is inactivated by hemoglobin released by intravascular hemolysis. Here, we investigated the effects of the new NO donor NCX1443 on PH in transgenic SAD mice, which exhibit mild SCD without severe hemolytic anemia. In SAD and wild-type (WT) mice, the pulmonary pressure response to acute hypoxia was similar and was abolished by 100 mg/kg NCX1443. The level of PH was also similar in SAD and WT mice exposed to chronic hypoxia (9% O2) alone or with SU5416 and was

Life history interviews with 11 boys diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder who had sexually offended: a sad storyline.

Little is known of the possible relationship between a diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and sexually offensive behavior in adolescents. Our aim was to understand how adolescents with ADHD who had sexually offended described their childhood experiences and spoke about their diagnostic symptoms. The boys' early lives and relations were unpredictable, and emotional, physical, and sexual limits had been crossed. However, many boys saw themselves or their diagnosis, rather than their parents, school, or "society," as the underlying cause of their behavior. They used diff
