Structural violence and necropolitics among Indigenous Peoples living with HIV who use substances in the Prairie provinces during COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Within Manitoba and Saskatchewan, pre-existing health inequities amongst Indigenous groups were intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. Service disruptions in the health and social service sector-combined with the effects of intersectional stigma-disproportionately impacted Indigenous peoples living with HIV (IPLH). IPLH experience structural violence and necropolitical exclusion through systemic forms of stigma situated within Canada's expansive colonial history. Utilizing the theoretical foundations of structural violence and necropolitics, this qualitative study examines how t

Sylvatic plague in a Canadian black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus).

In 2010, a black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) was found dead in Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan, Canada. Postmortem gross and histologic findings indicated bacterial septicemia, likely due to Yersinia pestis, which was confirmed by molecular analysis. This is the first report of Y. pestis in the prairie dog population within Canada.

Understanding the impact of a residential housing programme for people living with HIV/AIDS: a realist evaluation protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Housing instability and homelessness are significant barriers to medical treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS. For these individuals, lack of stable housing and stigma is associated with insufficient access to care, poor adherence to medication and higher cost burdens to the healthcare system. This protocol reports on the efforts to evaluate Sanctum V.1.0, a hospice and transitional care home for adults with HIV/AIDS in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. The current project was developed out of a need to identify how Sanctum V.1.0 produces varying programme outcomes to assist

The Varieties of Psychedelic Expertise in 1960s Canada: The Psychiatrists behind the Addiction Research Foundation's Study of LSD Therapy.

In 1962, Ontario's Addiction Research Foundation launched the first double-blind randomized controlled trial of LSD therapy as a treatment for alcoholism. The study, which found that LSD was not effective, was heavily criticized by other therapists working with the drug. These critics argued that the Toronto researchers who carried out the study were biased against LSD and used an anti-therapeutic method that was destined to produce negative results. Instead of creating a comfortable and supportive environment, they stressed, the Toronto group restrained patients to a bed in a hospital ward, u

In vitro activities of ciprofloxacin, cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, chloramphenicol, and rifampin against fully susceptible and moderately penicillin-resistant Neisseria meningitidis.

Moderately penicillin-resistant Neisseria meningitidis was responsible for an outbreak of meningococcal disease in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1993. We tested fully susceptible and moderately resistant strains of N. meningitidis against ciprofloxacin, cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, chloramphenicol, penicillin, and rifampin. Eighteen percent of the isolates were moderately resistant to penicillin (MIC > or = 0.06 microgram/ml) whereas susceptibility was 100% for the other agents tested.
