Applicability of the New Zealand-eating behavior questionnaire to predict weight loss responses to naltrexone/bupropion: a proof-of-concept trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite the availability of different obesity medications, individual responses vary widely. This pilot study evaluated whether the New Zealand Eating Behavior Questionnaire (NZ-EBQ) could predict weight loss response to naltrexone/bupropion in adults with clinical obesity. METHODS: We conducted a 24-week prospective, single-site, pilot, exploratory, phenotype-stratified trial evaluating utility of the NZ-EBQ for predicting weight reduction response to naltrexone/bupropion. Prior to enrolment, participants completed the NZ-EBQ, which classified their eating behavior phenotype and

Lower executive function performance in patients with functional dyspepsia.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging has shown that most brain regions involved in executive functions (EFs) exhibit abnormalities in functional dyspepsia (FD) patients - for example, decreased cortical thickness in these regions. However, EFs in FD patients have remained poorly understood. This study aimed to compare EFs between healthy controls (HCs) and FD patients and investigate the associations of EFs with clinical characteristics in FD patients. Forty-three FD patients meeting the Rome IV criteria and forty-three sex-, age-, and education level-matched HCs were included in the study. T

Potential overfeeding among formula fed Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children participants and associated factors.

BACKGROUND: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) provides enough formula to meet the known nutritional needs of infants up to 6 months of age whose mothers report not breastfeeding, but many mothers report WIC providing insufficient formula, indicating potential overfeeding. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of potential overfeeding among formula-feeding WIC participants and identify associated factors. METHODS: Potential overfeeding was identified among participants of the longitudinal Infant and Toddler Feeding Practices Study-2 (ITFPS-2) rec

Dietary protein enhances non-specific immunity, anti-oxidative capability and resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila in Labeo rohita fingerlings pre-exposed to short feed deprivation stress.

Present experiment was conducted to study the effect of dietary protein levels on growth, immunity and anti-oxidative status of Labeo rohita fingerlings during feed deprivation followed by refeeding. Fish (5.44 ± 0.10 g) were deprived of feed for 3 weeks and then re-fed to satiation for 5 weeks with one of the diets containing 25 (25P), 30 (30P), 35 (35P) or 40 (40P) percent crude protein (CP) level. In addition to these groups, a control group (C) was also maintained by feeding to satiation level twice daily with a diet containing 30% CP throughout the experimental period. At the end of 8-wee

Nursing tasks and strain development among German home care nurses: results from an observational field study.

Despite the central role of home care in aging societies, little is known about the daily work processes and short-term strain experienced by home care nurses. This observational field study addresses this critical research gap by investigating the nursing tasks and short-term strain reported by home care nurses and nursing assistants in Germany. Using workplace observations and short surveys in combination, this study observed 46 German home care nurses from 25 organizations. Nursing tasks were coded in five-minute intervals, and strain outcomes (fatigue, engagement, monotony, mental satiatio

Physical Activity and Prevalence of Functional Dyspepsia in Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity is related to the development of functional dyspepsia (FD); however, the available evidence about association between physical activity (PA) levels with risk of FD is scarce and indecisive. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to investigate this association in enormous number of Iranian adult people. METHODS: This study was conducted on 4763 general public adults in Isfahan, Iran. The data of the present study are collected from SEPAHAN study of Isfahan city. The PA levels were estimated using general practice physical activity questionnaire (GPPAQ). The pr

Cannabidiol for Functional Dyspepsia With Normal Gastric Emptying: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabidiol (CBD), a CBR2 agonist with limited psychic effects, antagonizes CB1/CB2 receptors. Allelic variation CNR1 (gene for CBR1) rs806378 and FAAH rs324420 were associated with altered gut motility and sensation. This study aimed to compare the pharmacodynamics and clinical effects of a 4-week treatment with pharmaceutical-grade CBD vs placebo and assess the interactions of FAAH and CNR1 gene variants on the effects of CBD in patients with functional dyspepsia (FD). METHODS: We performed a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled (1:1 ratio) study of CBD b.i.d. (20 mg

Altered acylated ghrelin response to food intake in congenital generalized lipodystrophy.

BACKGROUND: Patients with congenital generalized lipodystrophy (CGL) have very low levels of leptin and are described as having a voracious appetite. However, a direct comparison between CGL and eutrophic individuals is lacking, regarding both appetite parameters and acylated ghrelin, the hormone form that is active in acute food intake stimulation. The objective of the present study was to address whether and in what extent the subjective appetite parameters and acylated ghrelin response to a meal are affected in CGL individuals, in comparison to eutrophic individuals. Additionally, an obese

The Intragastric Pressure Measurement: A Novel Method to Assess Gastric Accommodation in Functional Dyspepsia Children.

BACKGROUND: Impaired gastric accommodation (GA) is proposed as a main pathophysiological mechanism for functional dyspepsia (FD). At present, the gastric barostat is the criterion standard to measure GA. Hence, this procedure is invasive and it may alter gastric physiology. Recently, we proposed the measurement of intragastric pressure (IGP) by means of high-resolution manometry during nutrient intake as a potential alternative for assessing GA in adults. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was first to study the feasibility of the IGP measurement with nutrient tolerance in children with FD and second to com

Dietary and nutraceutical interventions for functional dyspepsia: A narrative review.

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a prevalent disorder of gut-brain interaction. Commonly, meals may exacerbate FD symptoms like postprandial fullness, early satiation, epigastric pain, and nausea. We narratively synthesize meta-analyses, randomized trials, and observational evidence to outline mechanism-based dietary and nutraceutical options. Evidence favors small, regular, lower-fat meals and adjusting texture/osmolarity to minimize gastric distension. In selected phenotypes-particularly postprandial distress with bloating-a brief, dietitian-supervised low-FODMAP trial with staged reintroduction

Behavioral medicine treatment of ruminative vomiting and associated weight loss in an adolescent with autism.

Treated persistent ruminative vomiting of a 15-year-old boy with autism using a multicomponent behavioral medicine program within a residential facility. Preceding intervention the boy had lost 15 pounds associated with high-rate ruminating. The treatment program included a combination of dietary, nutritional, and behavioral procedures that emphasized food restrictions, satiation, and setting condition manipulations. Ruminative vomiting was reduced to near-zero levels and weight gain was achieved following treatment implementation. These therapeutic gains were sustained during a maintenance pr

Emotional factors in juvenile diabetes mellitus: a study of the early life experiences of eight diabetic children.

The developmental history of eight diabetic children was compared with that of their nondiabetic siblings. On the basis of data obtained through interviews with the children and their families, as well as a chart review, we advance the hypothesis that an as yet unspecified metabolic "pre-diabetic" pathophysiological condition may be reflected in disturbances of appetite, satiation and weight regulation appearing early in life in those children who may later develop clinical diabetes mellitus. We further hypothesize that these dysfunctions are accompanied by a disturbance in important psycholog

Could Insulin Be a Better Regulator of Appetite/Satiety Balance and Body Weight Maintenance in Response to Glucose Exposure Compared to Sucrose Substitutes? Unraveling Current Knowledge and Searching for More Appropriate Choices.

BACKGROUND: Insulin exerts a crucial impact on glucose control, cellular growing, function, and metabolism. It is partially modulated by nutrients, especially as a response to the intake of foods, including carbohydrates. Moreover, insulin can exert an anorexigenic effect when inserted into the hypothalamus of the brain, in which a complex network of an appetite/hunger control system occurs. The current literature review aims at thoroughly summarizing and scrutinizing whether insulin release in response to glucose exposure may be a better choice to control body weight gain and related diseases

Evolutionary perspectives on substance and behavioural addictions: Distinct and shared pathways to understanding, prediction and prevention.

Addiction poses significant social, health, and criminal issues. Its moderate heritability and early-life impact, affecting reproductive success, poses an evolutionary paradox: why are humans predisposed to addictive behaviours? This paper reviews biological and psychological mechanisms of substance and behavioural addictions, exploring evolutionary explanations for the origin and function of relevant systems. Ancestrally, addiction-related systems promoted fitness through reward-seeking, and possibly self-medication. Today, psychoactive substances disrupt these systems, leading individuals to

A comparison of meal-related appetite, food reward and eating behaviour traits in people with and without spinal cord injury.

Persons with a spinal cord injury (SCI) are at a heightened risk of obesity. However, little is known about the effect of SCI on factors that influence energy intake. This study compared measures of food reward, eating behaviour traits, and appetite perceptions between adults with and without SCI. Twenty wheelchair dependent persons with chronic (>1 year) SCI (C1-T12) and twenty non-SCI individuals matched for BMI, age and sex participated. Following a familiarisation visit, participants consumed a breakfast meal, normalised for resting metabolic rate (RMR), and provided subjective appetite pe

[Drug control of appetite].

The control of the appetite by drugs (sensation of hunger, satiation and satiety) is crucial in the management of obesity. Numerous drugs in this domain were forbidden these last years because of serious side effects. New researches allow the development of new substances presenting fewer side effects either by better specificity on receptors (locarserin), or by new mechanism of action (GLP-1, leptin, anti Ghrelin). The appetite is settled by a complex neurohormonal mechanism. To act on some systems at the same time, the development of products "polypill" combining naltroxone-bupropion, phente

Exploring the Health Effects of New Additive- and Allergen-Free Reformulated Cooked Meat Products: Consumer Survey, Clinical Trial, and Perceived Satiety.

BACKGROUND: Consumers are increasingly interested in healthier, less processed food products, driving the meat industry to improve the quality and health benefits of its offerings. Growing concerns about additives and allergens have encouraged the replacement of these ingredients with natural alternatives, presenting both challenges and opportunities. However, consumer rejection of additives and the actual health effects of their replacement remain poorly understood. In previous work, two new meat products-cooked turkey breast and cooked ham-were developed, where additives and allergens were r
