Cyclosporine A (CsA) is a potent immunosuppressive agent whose clinical usage is limited by nephrotoxicity. Schisandrin B (SchB), isolated from the fruit of Schisandra chinensis, is a natural compound with multiple pharmacological activities that has been shown to attenuate organ injury caused by CsA. Hence, the primary objective of the current study was to evaluate whether SchB has a cytoprotective effect on CsA-induced nephrotoxicity in human proximal tubular epithelial cell line (HK-2). This study demonstrated that pre-incubation of HK-2 cells with 2.5-10.0μM SchB ameliorated CsA induced cy

Thioacetamide (TAA) is a potent hepatotoxicant and has been widely used to develop experimental liver fibrosis/cirrhosis models. Although the liver toxicity of TAA has been extensively studied, little is known about its potential influence on UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs) associated with the development of liver fibrosis. The study presented here aimed to uncover the regulation patterns of UGTs in TAA-induced liver fibrosis of rats. Potential counteracting effects of hepatoprotective agents were also determined. TAA treatment for 8 weeks induced a significant transcriptional up-regulatio

PURPOSE: Typhoid is a significant global health challenge due to its high pathogenicity and antimicrobial resistance. Salmonella typhi (S.typhi) can switch its lifestyles between biofilm and planktonic phase which allows it to evade host defenses and develop resistance to antibiotics. Salmonella sp. harbors multiple genes encoding efflux-pumps systems whose up-regulation contributes to multi-drug resistance (MDR) and extensive drug-resistance (XDR). To overcome the battle against resistant S. typhi strains, novel non-antibiotics inhibitors are required for inhibitory application. This study as

Schisandrin B (Sch-B), the most abundant active ingredient of the fruit of Schisandra chinensis, has been proposed to have antioxidant, anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory effects. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of Sch-B on differentiation of T helper cells (Th). Using mouse splenic lymphocytes stimulated with concanavalin A (Con A) in vitro and ex vivo as inflammation models, we found that Sch-B significantly inhibited secretion of Th1 and Th17 related cytokines, such as IFN-γ and IL-17. In addition, we found that Sch-B suppressed the differentiation of naive CD4+ T c

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by dopaminergic neuron loss, α-synuclein accumulation, and sustained neuroinflammation. Autophagy can remove pathogenic α-synuclein and restrain NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation. Gomisin N (GN), a lignan from Schisandra chinensis, is neuroprotective, but its mechanism in PD remains incompletely defined.
PURPOSE: To determine whether GN protects against PD-like pathology by coordinating autophagy and neuroinflammation through autophagy related 16 like 1 (ATG16L1).
METHODS: Neuronal and microglial cell mo

Liver injury is a common pathological process characterized by massive degeneration and abnormal death of liver cells. With increase in dead cells and necrosis, liver injury eventually leads to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), hepatic fibrosis, and even hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Consequently, it is necessary to treat liver injury and to prevent its progression. The drug Bicylol is widely employed in China to treat chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) and has therapeutic potential for liver injury. It is the derivative of dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans extracted from Schisandra chinens
