Modulating positive self-referential processing by 40 Hz tACS in individuals with subthreshold depression: A double-blind, sham-controlled study.

BACKGROUND: A positive self-evaluation is essential to mental well-being. Despite of its importance, little is known how to modulate or enhance positive self-evaluation. Gamma-frequency (40 Hz) transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) has been shown to promote emotion regulation and memory, which may foster positive self-evaluations. Here, we investigated whether 40 Hz tACS over the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), a key brain region implicating self-referential processing, could enhance positive self-evaluation among individuals exhibiting subthreshold depression. We hypothesized t

A bioelectronic route to compassion: Rationale and study protocol for combining transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) with compassionate mental imagery.

BACKGROUND: The vagus nerve (VN) is a neural nexus between the brain and body, enabling bidirectional regulation of mental functioning and peripheral physiology. Some limited correlational findings suggest an association between VN activation and a particular form of self-regulation: compassionate responding. Interventions that are geared towards strengthening self-compassion in particular, can serve as an antidote to toxic shame and self-criticism and improve psychological health. OBJECTIVE: We describe a protocol for examining the role of VN activation on 'state' self-compassion, self-criti

Common and distinct contributions of the dorsomedial prefrontal and posterior parietal cortices to social episodic memory.

The self-reference effect (SRE) refers to the robust mnemonic advantage for self-relevant information and is characterized by a graded pattern spanning the self, close others, and distant others. Despite extensive behavioural evidence, causal evidence for the neural mechanisms supporting the SRE remains limited, particularly during incidental encoding and across source memory, metacognition, and emotional valence. We investigated the causal contributions of the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC) to self-other episodic memory and metacognition using focal

Effects of anesthesia and nociceptive stimulation in an experimental model of brachial plexus avulsion.

Unilateral dorsal rhizotomy of brachial plexus nerves (C5-Th1) performed under general anesthesia is known to induce self-mutilation in rats. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different anesthetic agents, and of pre-rhizotomy nociceptive stimulation on the appearance of self-mutilation. Self-mutilation appeared in 78% of animals after rhizotomy had been performed under pentobarbital anesthesia. When ketamine was used as the general anesthetic, self-mutilation was almost suppressed (13%) and consisted of superficial erosions. Mechanical nociceptive stimulation, when applied j

Interferences between breathing, experimental dyspnoea and bodily self-consciousness.

Dyspnoea, a subjective experience of breathing discomfort, is a most distressing symptom. It implicates complex cortical networks that partially overlap with those underlying bodily self-consciousness, the experience that the body is one's own within a given location (self-identification and self-location, respectively). Breathing as an interoceptive signal contributes to bodily self-consciousness: we predicted that inducing experimental dyspnoea would modify or disrupt this contribution. We also predicted that manipulating bodily self-consciousness with respiratory-visual stimulation would po

Searching for the inner self: evidence against a direct dependence of the self-prioritization effect on the ventro-medial prefrontal cortex.

The processing of self-referential material is supposed to be located in the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) and in particular in the ventro-medial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC). A reliable method to assess effects of self-relevance is the so-called matching paradigm in which the prioritization of newly learned self-associations in comparison to non-self-relevant associations can be measured. To assess the connection of activation in the VMPFC and self-referential processing, we measured the self-prioritization effect (SPE) before and after experimentally manipulating activation in the VMPFC. We a

Women's clitoris, vagina, and cervix mapped on the sensory cortex: fMRI evidence.

INTRODUCTION: The projection of vagina, uterine cervix, and nipple to the sensory cortex in humans has not been reported. AIMS: The aim of this study was to map the sensory cortical fields of the clitoris, vagina, cervix, and nipple, toward an elucidation of the neural systems underlying sexual response. METHODS: Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we mapped sensory cortical responses to clitoral, vaginal, cervical, and nipple self-stimulation. For points of reference on the homunculus, we also mapped responses to the thumb and great toe (hallux) stimulation. MAIN OUTCOME ME

Deep brain stimulation of the nucleus accumbens core but not shell reduces motivational components of heroin taking and seeking in rats.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation is explored as a new intervention for treatment-resistant substance use dependence. A candidate brain region is the nucleus accumbens, due to its involvement in reward and motivation. This study aimed to explore effects of NAcore and NAshell deep brain stimulation on aspects of heroin taking and seeking in a self-administration model for rats. METHODS: NAcore and NAshell deep brain stimulation was applied during 25 or 100 µg/kg/infusion heroin self-administration on an FR4 schedule of reinforcement and during cue- and heroin-induced reinstatement. [The resonance EEG reactions in rhythmical photostimulation and the changes in functional status].

Changes in EEG fine structure in the occipital areas, heart rate, and breath pattern were recorded in 10 male volunteers under photic stimulation with slowly varying frequency in the range of lower or higher EEG alpha-subbands. Self-ratings (on the scale SAN-self-assessment of state of health, activity, and mood) of the functional state, general activity, and mood were obtained before and after stimulation. EEG effects of such photostimulation were represented by the resonance EEG responses of discrete spectral EEG components, frequencies of which periodically coincided with varying rate of fl

Amphetamine enhancement of reward asymmetry.

Rats with bilaterally implanted lateral hypothalamic electrodes were tested daily for self-stimulation to each side of the brain; rotation (circling behavior) was recorded concomitantly. All rats rotated in a perferred direction regardless of the side of the brain stimulated and all rats had asymmetries in self-stimulation sensitivity (threshold and rate-intensity functions) related to the direction of rotation. Amphetamine both enhanced rotation and potentiated the asymmetry in self-stimulation sensitivity. Subsequently rats were tested in a choice procedure providing concurrent access to rew

The differential and temporal effects of antecedent exercise on the self-stimulatory behavior of a child with autism.

The effects of two levels of exercise (walking versus jogging) in suppressing the self-stimulatory behavior of a five-year-old boy with autism were examined. The exercise conditions were applied immediately before periods of academic programming. Maladaptive self-stimulatory behaviors were separately tracked, enabling identification of behaviors that were more susceptible to change (e.g., physical self-stimulation and "out of seat" behavior) versus those that were more resistant (e.g., visual self-stimulation). Examination of temporal effects indicated a decrease in physical self-stimulation a

Dissociable Roles Within the Social Brain for Self-Other Processing: A HD-tDCS Study.

Theories of right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) function in social cognition include self-other distinction, self-inhibition, or embodied rotation, whereas the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) is associated with integrating social information. However, no study has provided causal evidence for dissociable roles of the rTPJ and dmPFC in social cognition. A total of 52 healthy young adults were stratified to receive either dmPFC or rTPJ anodal high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) in a sham-controlled, double-blinded, repeated measures design. Chronic brain stimulation rewarding experience ameliorates depression-induced cognitive deficits and restores aberrant plasticity in the prefrontal cortex.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a multifactorial disease which often coexists with cognitive deficits. Depression-induced cognitive deficits are known to be associated with aberrant reward processing, neurochemical and structural alterations. Recent studies have shown that chronic electrical stimulation of brain reward areas induces a robust antidepressant effect. However, the effects of repeated electrical self-stimulation of lateral hypothalamus - medial forebrain bundle (LH-MFB) on depression-induced cognitive deficits and associated neurochemical and structural alterations i

Attempted induction of signalled lucid dreaming by transcranial alternating current stimulation.

Neurophysiological correlates of self-awareness during sleep ('lucid dreaming') remain unclear despite their importance for clarifying the neural underpinnings of consciousness. Transcranial direct (tDC) and alternating (tAC) current stimulation during sleep have been shown to increase dream self-awareness, but these studies' methodological weaknesses prompted us to undertake additional study. tAC stimulation was associated with signal-verified and self-rated lucid dreams-but so was the sham procedure. Situational factors may be crucial to inducing self-awareness during sleep.

High and low frequency anterior nucleus of thalamus deep brain stimulation: Impact on memory and mood in five patients with treatment resistant temporal lobe epilepsy.

High frequency anterior nucleus of the thalamus deep brain stimulation (ANT DBS) is an established therapy for treatment resistant focal epilepsies. Although high frequency-ANT DBS is well tolerated, patients are rarely seizure free and the efficacy of other DBS parameters and their impact on comorbidities of epilepsy such as depression and memory dysfunction remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of low vs high frequency ANT DBS on verbal memory and self-reported anxiety and depression symptoms. Five patients with treatment resistant temporal lobe epilepsy were imp

Stuck on you! Social brain stimulation increases the cognitive effort required to return to the egocentric perspective.

Flexible switching between self and other perspectives is critical for adaptive social cognition and is thought to rely on the dynamic regulation of self-other representations. Although neuroimaging implicates the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) and right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) in perspective-taking, causal evidence for their contributions to perspective switching is lacking. Here, we applied focal transcranial direct current stimulation (f-tDCS) to the dmPFC and rTPJ while participants completed a visual perspective-taking task requiring switches between egocentric and altercen

Disturbances in body ownership in schizophrenia: evidence from the rubber hand illusion and case study of a spontaneous out-of-body experience.

BACKGROUND: A weakened sense of self may contribute to psychotic experiences. Body ownership, one component of self-awareness, can be studied with the rubber hand illusion (RHI). Watching a rubber hand being stroked while one's unseen hand is stroked synchronously can lead to a sense of ownership over the rubber hand, a shift in perceived position of the real hand, and a limb-specific drop in stimulated hand temperature. We aimed to assess the RHI in schizophrenia using quantifiable measures: proprioceptive drift and stimulation-dependent changes in hand temperature. METHODS: The RHI was elic

[Effect of the melanostatin analogue alaptide on dopamine-dependent behavior in rats reared in isolation].

The effects of alaptide, a new analog of melanostatine, on self-stimulation of the lateral hypothalamus, rotation behavior in rotometer, and stereotypy were studied in rats bred in social isolation from other animals beginning from the 17th day of birth and rats bred in groups. Alaptide potentiated amphetamine-stimulated behavior only in rats reared in social isolation. This effect was lateralized: the left rotation dominated. In rats reared in isolation and in groups the effects of alaptide on self-stimulation were oppositely directed: in the former it increased and in the latter decreased th

A study was made of the effect of morphine, promedol, phentanyl, pentazacine and psychostimulant d,l-amphetamine on the threshold of pain sensitivity and self-stimulation of the hypothalamus and the septum in rats. Electrical stimulation of the systems of positive reinforcement of the hypothalamus and the septum, and also analgetics increased the threshold of pain sensitivity, whereas d,l-amphetamine failed to influence it. D,l-amphetamine and morphine facilitated, promedol failed to influence, phentanyl decreased and pentazacine completely depressed the hypothalamic self-stimulation. The sept

Enhancing social ability by stimulating right temporoparietal junction.

The temporoparietal junction (TPJ) is a key node within the "social brain". Several studies suggest that the TPJ controls representations of the self or another individual across a variety of low-level (agency discrimination, visual perspective taking, control of imitation) and high-level (mentalizing, empathy) sociocognitive processes. We explored whether sociocognitive abilities relying on on-line control of self and other representations could be modulated with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of TPJ. Participants received excitatory (anodal), inhibitory (cathodal), or sham st
