BACKGROUND: Patients with selective deficits in the naming and comprehension of animals, plants, and artifacts have been reported. These descriptions of specific semantic category deficits have contributed substantially to the understanding of the architecture of semantic representations.
OBJECTIVE: This study sought to further understanding of the organization of the semantic system by demonstrating that another semantic category, knowledge of the human body, may be selectively preserved.
METHODS: The performance of a patient with semantic dementia was compared with the performance of healt

We document the unexpected dissociation of preserved reading skills in a patient with severely impaired semantic memory. The common co-occurrence between impairment of word meaning and surface dyslexia has not been observed. The patient (hereafter called DRN) had marked naming and word comprehension difficulties. A strong word frequency effect was observed on tests of word comprehension but was absent in a test of word reading. DRN's ability to read both regular and exception words that he failed to comprehend was remarkably well preserved. We will argue that these findings provide further sup

A probe technique requiring convergent and divergent semantic behavior and representing five levels of communicative responsibility served as the research tool. Stimuli were presented to 29 asphasic adults (13 Broca's, 7 Wernicke's, and 9 anomic), 26 adults with chronic undifferentiated schizophrenia, and 32 normal elderly control subjects. Within each group significant differences were observed on the semantic task (convergent and divergent) and on level of communicative responsibility. Among subjects with aphasia, differences appeared to relate more to severity than type. Differences between

A striking dissociation between the inability to identify living things plus food, along with a preserved ability to identify inanimate objects has been observed in patients who are recovering from herpes simplex encephalitis. In order to find out if a similar dissociation is also present in Alzheimer's disease (where the suspected initial site of parenchymal atrophy involves the same areas affected by herpes simplex virus), we carried out five experimental linguistic tasks to compare Alzheimer's patients' performance therein with that of vascular dementia patients and controls. Our results in

Semantic memory (SM) was investigated in six patients with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) by on-line measurement of semantic priming in a lexical decision task, and off-line tests of comprehension. Detailed assessment was carried out on naming, name comprehension, and probes of semantic knowledge with a battery of 150 items. The patients performed normally on perceptual tests and displayed an item-specific loss of knowledge on the semantic tests. In a primed lexical decision task, greater semantic priming was found relative to age-matched normals. The priming was substantially greater for i

Two psychometric tests designed to evaluate "verbal fluency" and "naming" as a measure of semantic memory were presented to 18 patients with Alzheimer's-type dementia, 16 other patients with multi-infarct dementia, and 14 age-matched control subjects. The diagnosis of multi-infarct dementia and Alzheimer's-type dementia was based on the commonly accepted criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, ed 3. Although the patients with Alzheimer and multi-infarct dementias, respectively, suffered from a comparable degree of dementia (as determined by the Mini-Mental State

Tested were 50 aphasic patients (16 Broca's, 15 Wernicke's, 10 global, and 9 amnesic), 13 nonaphasic brain damaged patients, and 13 normal adults to evaluate the effect of semantic plausibility on sentence comprehension in active affirmative declarative sentences with a sentence-picture matching task. A plate of two pictures was provided for each stimulus sentence, and the subject was required to choose the picture corresponding to the sentence presented auditorily. Two types of sentences in terms of plausibility were prepared, i.e., probable sentences (P) describing common events in our daily

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the processing differences of phonological interference (tongue twisters) and semantic interference (subject-object interchange/double-object interchange) between prelingual deaf Chinese speakers and normal-hearing speakers during sentence reading and memory, to test the deficit phonemic awareness hypothesis and the deficit structure awareness hypothesis of deaf reading, and to provide theoretical basis for deaf education strategies.
METHOD: Twenty-two prelingually deaf college students (hearing loss ≥ 85 dB) and 41 normal-hearing college

Large-scale visual-language pre-trained models (VLPMs) have demonstrated exceptional performance in downstream object detection through text prompts for natural scenes. However, their application to zero-shot nuclei detection on histopathology images remains relatively unexplored, mainly due to the significant gap between the characteristics of medical images and the web-originated text-image pairs used for pre-training. This paper aims to investigate the potential of the object-level VLPM, Grounded Language-Image Pre-training (GLIP), for zero-shot nuclei detection. Specifically, we propose an

The angular and supramarginal gyri (AG and SMG) together constitute the inferior parietal lobule (IPL) and have been associated with cognitive functions that support reading. How those functions are distributed across the AG and SMG is a matter of debate, the resolution of which is hampered by inconsistencies across stereotactic atlases provided by the major brain image analysis software packages. Schematic results from automated meta-analyses suggest primarily semantic (word meaning) processing in the left AG, with more spatial overlap among phonological (auditory word form), orthographic (vi

The operational environment of construction machinery is predominantly unstructured, characterized by rapid changes, high complexity, and irregularly distributed objects. This poses significant challenges for 3D semantic perception, particularly due to the high cost of acquiring point cloud semantic labels. To address this, a novel 3D semantic perception scheme is proposed for such unstructured environments. This scheme integrates image semantic segmentation results with point cloud clustering via perspective projection. The projection parameters are refined using Particle Swarm Optimization (

Semantic segmentation for autonomous driving is challenged by limited field-of-view (FoV), where occlusions and restricted viewpoints reduce available visual information. Existing approaches often incur considerable computational overhead, which is unsuitable for autonomous driving systems. To build robust and lightweight semantic segmentation models, attention-based knowledge distillation (KD) can be an efficient alternative. Nevertheless, KD remains primarily visual and provides limited information when visual cues are incomplete or ambiguous. In contrast, biological visual systems integrate

Taxonomic and thematic relations are major components of semantic representation but their neurocognitive underpinnings are still debated. We hypothesised that taxonomic relations preferentially activate parts of anterior temporal lobe (ATL) because they rely more on colour and shape features, while thematic relations preferentially activate temporoparietal cortex (TPC) because they rely more on action and location knowledge. We first conducted activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis to assess evidence for neural specialisation in the existing fMRI literature (Study 1), then used

BACKGROUND: Children with dyslexia and/or developmental language disorder (hereafter children with DDLD) have been reported to retrieve fewer words than their typically developing (TD) peers in semantic fluency tasks. It is not known whether this retrieval difficulty can be attributed to the semantic structure of their lexicon being poor or, alternatively, to words being retrieved more slowly despite semantic structure being intact.
AIMS: To test two theoretical models that could potentially account for retrieval difficulties in semantic fluency tasks, namely, the Poor Lexical-Semantic Struct

OBJECTIVE: It is unclear whether observed memory impairment in anorexia nervosa (AN) depends on the semantic structure (categorized words) of material to be encoded. We aimed to investigate the processing of semantically related information in AN.
METHOD: Memory performance was assessed in a recall, learning, and recognition test in 27 adult women with AN (19 restricting, 8 binge-eating/purging subtype; average disease duration: 9.32 years) and 30 healthy controls using an extended version of the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, applying semantically related and unrelated word stimuli.

This paper presents an investigation of the hypothesis that conceptual knowledge for abstract and concrete items is underpinned by qualitatively different representational frameworks (Crutch and Warrington, 2005a). A re-analysis of the semantic reading errors of four deep dyslexic patients is presented, examining the incidence of semantically associated and semantically similar errors in response to abstract and concrete target words. The results demonstrate that abstract target words elicit a greater proportion of associative than similar errors, while concrete words show the reverse pattern.

Following cerebral anoxia, EC a 55-year-old patient, exhibited a severe and clear-cut pattern of semantic impairments without general intellectual deficit or perceptual difficulty. EC demonstrated a complex neuropsychological picture including a massive visual agnosia and a complete lack of imagery, both of which involved all categories of objects (living and non living) and a category-specific word comprehension deficit limited to animal names. Findings are discussed in the light of the theoretical frameworks currently available in the area of neuropsychology. It is argued that neither the si

In three visual-world eye-tracking studies, we investigated the individual and combinatory use of lexico-semantic information of the verb and gender marking of the determiner to predict the referent of an upcoming object among L1 and L2 German speakers. Importantly, in our design random, the linguistic input randomly varied in terms of the type of information (lexico-semantic, morphosyntactic, or a combination thereof) that could be used as predictive cue, most closely reflecting real-world language input compared to most previous studies. Cluster-based permutation analyses revealed prediction

DeepSeek-R1 Distilled Large Language model (LLM) was touted to be almost as good and much cheeper to generate than traditional LLMs. We compared its ability to answer medical questions from the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE) and found that the performance drop from the original model to DeepSeek was significant. DeepSeek is not yet a good alternative for medical question answering.

Distributed sub-systems of the brain's semantic network have been shown to process semantics associated with visual features of objects (e.g., shape, colour) in the ventral visual processing stream, whereas semantics associated with actions are processed in the dorsal stream. Orthographic lexical processing has also been shown to occur in the ventral stream. Past research from our lab (Neudorf et al., 2019) has demonstrated a temporal (i.e., reaction time) priming advantage for object primes over action primes in the lexical decision task consistent with ventral shared-stream processing of vis
