The relationship between quick return shift schedules and burnout among nurses: A prospective repeated measures multi-source study.

BACKGROUND: In today's world, essential health care services are expected round the clock, leading to distinct shift work requirements. A notable aspect is the "quick return," where the rest interval between nursing shifts is <11 h. Preliminary research suggests a potential association between quick return schedules, diminished sleep quality, and possible nurse burnout. Yet, the motivation of nurses could potentially moderate this relationship. OBJECTIVE: To examine a moderated-mediation model, whereby sleep duration and nurse's motivation act together to mediate the link between quick return

SHIFTPLAN: a randomized controlled trial investigating the effects of a multimodal shift-work intervention on drivers' fatigue, sleep, health, and performance parameters.

BACKGROUND: Shift work is commonly associated with health problems resulting from circadian misalignment and sleep restriction. About one in three shift workers is affected by insomnia and up to 90% report regular fatigue and/or sleepiness at the workplace. Epidemiological data shows that shift workers are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, breast cancer, mental-health problems, and shift-work disorder, which conditions typically lead to reduced work performance, processing errors, accidents at work, absenteeism, and reduced quality of life. Given these widespread

Impaired Responses to In Vitro Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Stimulation After Long-Term, Rotating Shift Work.

Shift work is a common labor practice affecting nearly 30% of the U.S. workforce. Long-term, rotating-shift work is particularly harmful to health. Persistent sleep deprivation in shift workers, among other factors, facilitates the development of a state of subclinical but chronic systemic inflammation with a high incidence and prevalence of infections and inflammation-related pathologies, suggesting an underlying disruption of immune responses. However, despite this state of chronic immune activation, cell-mediated inflammatory responses in rotating-shift workers are poorly understood. Here,

Light treatment for NASA shiftworkers.

Intense artificial light can phase-shift circadian rhythms and improve performance, sleep, and well-being during shiftwork simulations. In real shiftworkers, however, exposure to sunlight and other time cues may decrease the efficacy of light treatment, and occupational and family responsibilities may make it impractical. With these considerations in mind, we designed and tested light-treatment protocols for NASA personnel who worked on shifted schedules during two Space Shuttle missions. During the prelaunch week, treatment subjects self-administered light of approximately 10,000 lux at times

Association between Access to Alternatives to Daytime In-Center Hemodialysis and Employment among Patients with Kidney Failure.

KEY POINTS: While maintaining employment is a priority for patients with kidney disease, many stop working when they develop kidney failure. We examined the association between access to alternative dialysis schedules (home dialysis and evening shifts) and employment. Access to alternative dialysis schedules was associated with a 6%–10% higher rate of employment among patients receiving dialysis. BACKGROUND: Maintaining employment is a priority for many patients with kidney disease. Yet, only 30% to 35% of working aged patients with advanced CKD in the United States (US) report employment bef

Shift work sleep disorder: prevalence and consequences beyond that of symptomatic day workers.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Although there are considerable data demonstrating the impact of shift work on sleep and alertness, little research has examined the prevalence and consequences of shift work sleep disorder in comparison to the difficulties with insomnia and excessive sleepiness experienced by day workers. The present study was designed to determine the relative prevalence and negative consequences associated with shift work sleep disorder in a representative sample drawn from the working population of metropolitan Detroit. DESIGN: Random-digit dialing techniques were used to assess individu

The Double Bind of Precarious Work: Creating Need and Undermining Support.

For most adults in the U.S., participation in the labor force is a normative expectation and a pre-requisite for social acceptance and inclusion. Yet, the conditions of low-wage work can breed social isolation by interfering with supportive social ties at and outside of work. Drawing on survey data from The Shift Project, we examine the complex interplay between precarious working conditions and supportive social ties and illuminate a vicious cycle faced by low-wage workers. Precarious work schedule conditions are associated with reduced perceptions of support from social ties and act as a mec

Is shift work making your patient sick? Emerging theories and therapies for treating shift work disorder.

"Shift work" is a term that applies to a wide array of nontraditional work schedules. Shift work disorder (SWD) is a circadian rhythm sleep disorder experienced by a subset of shift workers that is characterized by excessive sleepiness during work and/or insomnia during scheduled sleep times. It is estimated to affect up to 2 million Americans, and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality from metabolic risk factors, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases, depression, accidents, and some kinds of cancers. Patient history is all that is needed to make a diagnosis with the Inte

The Effect of Night Shift Work on the Gut Microbiome Diversity: The EXPONIT Study.

Night shift work may alter the gut microbiome through mechanisms involving circadian misalignment, sleep disturbance, and changes in dietary behavior. However, existing studies on this topic have been limited in sample size and scope. We analyzed stool samples from 240 participants (mean age 42 years, 80% women), of whom 53% were night shift workers. Gut microbiota composition was assessed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing to derive measures of relative abundance, alpha diversity, and beta diversity. Associations between night shift work and microbial composition and alpha diversity were examined

Role of Life's Essential 8 in the association of night shift work with cardiovascular disease and mortality: a prospective cohort study of UK Biobank participants.

BACKGROUND: Night shift work is linked to higher risks of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality, but mechanisms remain unclear. Lifestyle, captured by the American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 (LE8), may act as a modifiable mediator. We aimed to examine the associations of night shift work with CVD and mortality and quantify the mediating role of LE8. METHODS: We analysed 131,844 employed participants without baseline CVD from the UK Biobank (2006-2010). We categorised night shift work as day workers, shift but never/rarely night shifts, some night shifts, and usual/permanent n

Impact of high sugar intake on neurobehavioral, oxidative, and hepatic integrity in mice exposed to simulated chronic jetlag/shiftwork.

Circadian misalignment, frequently encountered in shiftwork and trans-meridian travel, disrupts the temporal coordination of physiological processes and increases susceptibility to metabolic, neurobehavioral, and inflammatory disorders. Concurrently, it has been established that high dietary intake of refined sugars poses additional risks to systemic homeostasis. This study investigates the interactive effects of prolonged circadian disruption and sustained high-sucrose intake on neurobehavioral outcomes, metabolic parameters, redox homeostasis, and hepatic integrity in adult male mice. Effects of a snack on performance and errors during a simulated 16-h night shift: A randomized, crossover-controlled, pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Night shift workers might not eat due to their busy schedules during the night shift. However, food may not only satisfy hunger, but also affect performance and errors. The aim of this study was to clarify the effect of a snack on performance and errors during 2-day, 16-h, simulated night shifts. METHODS: A randomized, repeated-measure, crossover study was performed to investigate subjective and cognitive performance in 15 healthy female adults (mean age, 21.7 years) after they consumed a snack (352 kcal) during a simulated night shift (16:00 to 09:00) from October to November 201

Association between shift work and obesity in a large sample of Iranian steel industry workers.

Obesity is associated with several chronic diseases, and previous research suggests that shift work could be associated with the risk of overweight and obesity, but the results remain inconclusive. Furthermore, only a few studies report related findings for industrial workforce with high job-related stress. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to see if such association exists in a large sample of 3063 industrial workers in a developing country. The sample was selected among 16,000 steel company workers through multistage cluster sampling. We took anthropometric measurements, including bo

A Goal Programming Model for Nurse Shift Scheduling Incorporating Flexible Constraints: A Case Study in an Operating Room Department.

Background/Objectives: Operating room nurse scheduling is a complex healthcare optimization problem. Operating room settings are particularly challenging because permanent and subcontracted nurses operate under complex 16 h and 24 h shift structures, with continuous surgical coverage requirements and recovery-period requirements. To our knowledge, few existing models simultaneously integrate nurse preferences, recovery-period requirements, and heterogeneous shift structures within a unified goal programming framework. This study aims to develop and implement a goal programming model that incor
