The MRL/Mp mice bearing a lymphoproliferative gene, lpr (MRL/Mp-lpr/lpr), provide an appropriate model for the study of autoimmune mechanisms leading to the destruction of salivary and lacrimal gland tissue in Sjögren's syndrome. By 7-8 weeks of age, progressive focal inflammatory cell infiltrates are observed in salivary glands. We examined the possibility of transferring this disorder into syngeneic, young animals. Spleen cells and infiltrating mononuclear cells (MNC) enzymatically eluted from salivary glands were used. The results showed that sialadenitis could be transferred in vivo to you

Sialadenitis is an infection or inflammation of the salivary glands and can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or obstruction, with Staphylococcus aureus being the primary cause. Risk factors for neonatal sialadenitis include prematurity, immunological immaturity, dehydration, tube feeding, and factors predisposing to bacterial colonization. Symptoms may manifest as localized swelling, systemic signs of infection, or respiratory instability in preterm neonates. Isolated submandibular sialadenitis is extremely rare, with only a few cases reported in the medical literature. We report a case of a pr

Chronic sclerosing sialadenitis (CSS), currently included in the group of immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related diseases, is an under-recognized inflammatory lesion that afflicts mostly the submandibular gland of 40-60 years adults. To our knowledge, only one case of CSS located in the submandibular gland has been reported in childhood to date. We present a case of CSS in a 5-year-old male child. He presented with bilateral submandibular swellings that clinically resembled discrete lumps, suspected to be tumors. The completely resected tumors composed predominantly of dense lymphoplasmacytic inflam

PURPOSE: Sialendoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure considered a paradigm shift in the treatment of obstructive sialadenitis. However, it shows an average need for revision procedure in up to 24% of operated cases. This study analyzed whether patient-related variables could predict the need for a revision during postoperative follow-up.
METHODS: From 2012 to 2020, this prospective comparative study analyzed demographic data as well as preoperative responses to the "Manukau Salivary Symptoms Score" (MSSS) questionnaire as predictors of the need for a revision procedure due to symptoms rec

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the level of oxidative stress (OS) in human and rat chronic sialadenitis (CS) of the submandibular gland (SMG).
METHOD: We collected human SMG tissues and established a rat CS model using Wharton's duct partial ligation (PL). Morphological changes in the SMG were evaluated by HE, Sirius Red, AB/PAS, TUNEL and immunohistochemical (IHC) staining. Oxidative damage and antioxidant capacity were detected by ELISA, commercial assay kits and IHC staining to evaluate their expression levels and locations in the SMG.
RESULTS: Histopathological damage were obse

2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is widespread in China and other countries. The target of 2019-nCoV and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) is angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) positive cells. ACE2 is present in the salivary gland duct epithelium, and thus it could be the target of 2019-nCoV and SARS-CoV. SARS-CoV-related animal model experiments show that it can infect the epithelial cells on the salivary gland duct in Chinese rhesus macaques by targeting ACE2. Clinical studies confirmed that 2019-nCoV and SARS-CoV could be detected in saliva of human patients. We

Kuttner's tumour, also known as chronic sclerosing sialadenitis, is a localised form of IgG4 disease which presents as asymptomatic submandibular gland swelling. The diagnosis is usually based on histopathology and immunohistochemistry. A 33-year-old woman presented with acute-onset pain and swelling in the right submandibular region. Clinical examination showed an enlarged submandibular gland, and CT showed a calculus in the Wharton's duct. After treating the acute phase with antibiotics, the patient underwent submandibular gland excision and calculus removal. Histopathology of the specimen s

The influenza A virus has accounted for the majority of influenza infections in the 2017 to 2018 flu season, with the typical clinical presentation including fever, myalgias, malaise, and nonproductive cough. Notably this season, we have recognized a cluster of influenza A cases presenting as severe neck and facial swelling, with the subsequent diagnosis of sialadenitis. Whereas previous authors have demonstrated isolated case reports of sialadenitis associated with influenza A infection, herein we describe the clinical history, laboratory values, and radiographic findings of four patients pre

We report the cases of an 89-year-old woman and a 77-year-old woman with long-standing chronic sialadenitis (60 and 10 years, respectively) who were referred to our large academic medical center for sialendoscopy. Both patients presented with symptoms of acute parotid duct obstruction in the background of long-standing parotid duct disease. Imaging demonstrated ductal dilation and periductal inflammation and, along with the clinical findings, was supportive of a diagnosis of acute parotitis in the setting of chronic obstructive parotid disease. Both patients underwent sialendoscopy. Intraopera

BACKGROUND: Xanthogranulomatous tissue reaction is a well-documented process that is most common in kidney. There are other uncommon sites being documented as case reports in the literature. We would like to describe the clinicopathologic findings in a case of xanthogranulomatous sialadenitis that involved the parotid gland, which was clinically thought to be a tumoral mass, and compare it with the 4 previously reported cases.
CASE REPORT: A 52-year-old man presented with a left parotid mass. Fine needle aspiration biopsy was consistent with Warthin's tumor. The mass lesion was excised.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a proliferation-inducing ligand (APRIL) has a role in the survival of plasma cells infiltrating salivary glands from SS patients.
METHODS: We performed immunological staining for APRIL in minor salivary glands from SS with a pair of antibodies specifically recognizing APRIL-producing cells and secreted APRIL.
RESULTS: Despite high leucocyte infiltration, APRIL-producing cells, identified as neutrophils, were rare in SS salivary glands. Keratinocytes from the adjacent oral epithelium also produced APRIL, but we never detected significant levels of secreted APRI

The non-obese diabetic (NOD) mouse spontaneously develops diabetes and sialadenitis. The sialadenitis is characterized by histopathological changes in salivary glands and functional deficit similar to Sjögren's syndrome. In humans, Sjögren's syndrome could be associated with other connective tissue disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis. In the present study the genetic control of sialadenitis in mice was compared to that of arthritis. We have previously reported a NOD locus, identified in an F2 cross with the H2(q) congenic NOD (NOD.Q) and C57BL/10.Q (B10.Q) strains, that promoted susceptibi
