Organochlorine pesticides, PCBs and heavy metals in tissues of the mullet Liza aurata in lake Ganzirri and Straits of Messina (Sicily, Italy).

The aim of this research was to investigate the presence of organochlorine pesticides, PCBs and heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) in fish living in lake Ganzirri and the Straits of Messina, using the mullet Liza aurata as a "biological indicator". Different tissues of Liza aurata, which include the muscle, gill and vertebral column, were taken for analyses. Quantitative determination of the organochlorine compounds was performed by GC-ECD and confirmed with GC-MS. The concentrations of "essential" and "toxic" heavy metals were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. For the m

First Observations of Initial Blow Fly (Diptera: Calliphoridae) Activity on Lava Fields and in Subterranean Environments in Sicily in Cool Temperatures.

In criminal cases involving the recovery of human remains, as well as in cases of myiasis and pest management, the expertise of a forensic entomologist has been requested more and more frequently in Sicily. Recently, research on the insect species of forensic interest in Sicily has been investigated. The aim of this research was to raise awareness of this discipline and to build a Sicilian entomofauna checklist during cool temperatures. The predominant species observed in this study was Calliphora vicina (Robineau-Desvoidy) (Diptera, Calliphoridae), the first to colonize the carcasses; Lucilia

A single mutation in the GALC gene is responsible for the majority of late onset Krabbe disease patients in the Catania (Sicily, Italy) region.

A high proportion of patients with late onset forms of Krabbe disease is observed in a region north of Catania in Sicily. Molecular analysis in five families from this region shows that this condition is mainly due to a not previously described p.Gly41Ser substitution in the GALC gene that abolishes catalytic activity of the galactocerebrosidase enzyme, as shown by expression studies. Three patients were homozygous for this mutation, the other two were heterozygous, one with a frameshift mutation and one with a missense mutation on the second allele. Therefore, the mutation must be a mild one

The possible role of endocrine disrupting chemicals in the aetiology of cryptorchidism and hypospadias: a population-based case-control study in rural Sicily.

Abstract This was an open case-control study of the possible association between parental occupational and domestic exposures to potential endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC) assessed by questionnaire and cryptorchidism and hypospadias in their offspring in the agricultural area of Ragusa. Cases of infants born between 1998 and 2002 with either of these two malformations (n=90), and controls (n=203), were recruited through the paediatric services (for cases) and a random sample of healthy infants attending the same services born in the same period of time (for controls). Data on occupational

Trace metal signatures in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF): Insights from an amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) hotspot on Mount Etna (Sicily, Italy).

Chronic exposure to trace metals has been increasingly recognized as a possible factor influencing the risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In the province of Catania, on the eastern slopes of Mount Etna, epidemiological investigations have highlighted the presence of a high-incidence cluster of the disease. Against this backdrop, the present study was designed to explore whether the concentrations of trace elements in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) differ between ALS patients residing in this high-incidence area (In-Cluster) and those living in regions with lower incidence (Out-Cluster). Molecular Epidemiology and Genetic Diversity of Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus in Sicily during Pre- and Post-COVID-19 Surveillance Seasons.

Human respiratory syncytial virus (hRSV) is an important pathogen of acute respiratory tract infection of global significance. In this study, we investigated the molecular epidemiology and the genetic variability of hRSV over seven surveillance seasons between 2015 and 2023 in Sicily, Italy. hRSV subgroups co-circulated through every season, although hRSV-B mostly prevailed. After the considerable reduction in the circulation of hRSV due to the widespread implementation of non-pharmaceutical preventive measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, hRSV rapidly re-emerged at a high intensity in 2022-2

Comparative Agreement of Intradermal Tuberculin Test and Interferon-Gamma Release Assay in Bovine Tuberculosis Surveillance in Sicily, Italy (2024-2025).

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) remains endemic in southern Italy, particularly in Sicily, posing challenges for disease control and eradication. This study evaluated the diagnostic agreement between the intradermal tuberculin test (IDT), interferon-gamma release assay (IFN-γ), and post-mortem lesion detection in 1801 cattle from 44 herds in the province of Palermo during 2024-2025. Diagnostic agreement between IDT and IFN-γ was substantial in 2024 (κ = 0.731; 95% CI: 0.64-0.82; n = 991) and decreased to moderate in 2025 (κ = 0.453; 95% CI: 0.33-0.57; n = 572), reflecting a higher proportion of IFN-

Staphylococcal food poisoning case and molecular analysis of toxin genes in Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from food in Sicily, Italy.

A case of staphylococcal food poisoning was observed in two individuals of the same family after consumption of primosale, a semiripened sheep cheese produced in Sicily. Staphylococcus aureus isolated from the cheese produced enterotoxin C (SEC) and carried both the enterotoxin C (sec) and the toxic shock syndrome toxin (tsst-1) gene. Following this case, an extensive survey was conducted on 971 food samples (raw milk, cheese, meat, and food preparations). S. aureus was detected in 102 of 971 food samples, from all types of food with the exception of ricotta cheese. The tsst-1 gene was present

Serotyping of Cryptococcus neoformans isolates from environmental and clinical sources in extreme southern Italy (Calabria and Sicily, central Mediterranean area).

Ninety-seven environmental and four clinical isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans from several localities in extreme southern Italy were serotyped. All proved to be Cr. neoformans var. neoformans serotype A. The homogeneity of the serotypes suggests that geographical climatological conditions may play a role in Cr. neoformans serotype diffusion. It was furthermore revealed that, unlike the data reported for the serotypes of Cr. neoformans in mainland Italy, Cr. neoformans serotype D was not present in the examined sites in extreme southern Italy.

Preserved human remains from Militello Rosmarino (Sicily, 18th19th centuries AD): assessing the microbial status of a late modern Italian mummy assemblage.

Human mummies are an invaluable resource for bioarchaeology, providing insights into past diseases, behaviors, and funerary practices. However, their long-term preservation poses challenges, particularly when displayed publicly or stored in uncontrolled environments. This study seeks to assess the condition of an assemblage of spontaneously mummified religious dignitaries from Sicily, located in the recently reopened crypt of the mother church of Militello Rosmarino (province of Messina, Italy). Within the framework of the Sicily Mummy Project, we used the microbial community present on the re

Characterization of Listeria monocytogenes Strains Isolated in Palermo (Sicily and Italy) during the Years 2018-2020 from Severe Cases of Listeriosis.

Listeria monocytogenes (LM), the etiological agent of listeriosis, can cause foodborne zoonosis. In this study, we characterized 23 strains that caused human severe listeriosis in Palermo (Sicily, Italy) during the period of 2018-2020. In addition, we assessed the phenotypic susceptibility of clinical isolates to antibiotics in accordance with EUCAST guidelines. The serogroup was determined through the use of PCR, while MLST and MVLST were identified through the sequencing of housekeeping genes. Finally, susceptibility to antibiotics was assessed by means of the Phoenix automatic system. Patie

Aujeszky's disease in hunting dogs after the ingestion of wild boar raw meat in Sicily (Italy): clinical, diagnostic and phylogenetic features.

BACKGROUND: Aujeszky's disease is caused by Suid Herpes Virus-1 and species belonging to the genus Sus scrofa are the main reservoir hosts. This virus, however, is capable of infecting and causing severe disease, with an almost constant fatal outcome in other species, both domestic and wild (carnivores, monogastric herbivores and ruminants). Moreover, the possibility of transmission to humans has been demonstrated. This study reports and describes the clinical, diagnostic, pathological and phylogenetic aspects of two cases of Aujeszky's disease in two hunting dogs following the ingestion of in

Philometra spicarae sp. n. (Nematoda: Philometridae) from the abdominal cavity of the marine fish (picarel) Spicara smaris (Centracanthidae) off Sicily, Italy.

A new nematode species, Philometra spicarae sp. n. (Philometridae), is described from a gravid female found in the abdominal cavity of spicarel, Spicara smaris (Linnaeus) (Centracanthidae, Perciformes), from the Ionian Sea off Sicily, Italy. The new species differs from most other Philometra spp. parasitic in the abdominal cavity of marine fishes by the oesophagus without an anterior inflation, resembling thus only Philometra cheilopogoni Mordvinova, 1986 and Philometra justinei Moravec, Ternengo and Levron, 2006; these two species can be differentiated from P. spicarae by the relative length
