Influence of nonprotein nitrogen and protein of low rumen degradability on nitrogen flow and utilization in lactating dairy cows.

Four lactating cows, each fitted with a rumen cannula and duodenal and ileal t-cannulae, were used to measure flow and digestion of nitrogenous compounds in the digestive tract. Dietary dry matter contained 17% crude protein and 50:50 forage:concentrate. Treatments were: 1) corn silage-soybean meal; 2) corn silage-heated soybean meal; 3) ammonia-treated corn silage-soybean meal; and 4) ammonia-treated corn silage-heated soybean meal. Flow of organic matter to the duodenum was overestimated when lanthanum or chromium ethylene-diaminetetraacetate was used as an indigestible marker. This resulted

Chewing activity and digestive responses of cows fed alfalfa forages.

Nonlactating Guernsey cows were fed alfalfa silage or coarsely chopped, coarsely chopped and reconstituted, or long alfalfa hays. A computer system was developed to monitor chewing activity. Effects of diets upon chewing activity, digestibility, and ruminal parameters were determined. Digestibilities of DM and N were lower for silage than for hays. Cows fed silage had lower ruminal ammonia concentrations that were caused, at least in part, by greater bound N. Digestibilities of DM, N, and fiber were not different among the hays. The computer system recorded 98% of chews; visual measurements of

A lower cost method of preparing corn stover for Irpex lacteus treatment by ensiling with lactic acid bacteria.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated a method of preparing corn stover for Irpex lacteus (I. lacteus) treatment to improve its in vitro rumen degradability under non-sterile conditions. METHODS: Corn stover was inoculated with Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum), Lactobacillus buchneri (L. buchneri), and an equal mixture of these strains, and ensiled for 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days. After each period, a portion of the silage was sampled to assess the silage quality, and another portion of the silage was further treated with I. lacteus at 28°C for 28 d. All the samples were analyzed for fermenta

Optimum roughage proportion in barley-based feedlot cattle diets: total tract nutrient digestibility, rumination, ruminal acidosis, short-chain fatty absorption, and gastrointestinal tract barrier function.

Cattle need physically effective fiber to promote rumination and maintain rumen health, but economics favor the use of low-roughage feedlot diets. The study investigated the optimum barley silage proportion in barley-based finishing diets. Apparent total-tract digestibility (4-d total fecal collection), chewing behavior (6-d video recording), ruminal pH (6-d indwelling pH recording), and fermentation (1 day, sampling 0, 3, 6, 12, and 18 h postfeeding), short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) absorption (washed reticulo-rumen technique), gastrointestinal tract barrier function (marker infusion), and bloo

Influence of the method of forage conservation on feeding behaviour, intake and characteristics of reticulo-rumen content, in sheep fed ad libitum.

The influence of silage conservation methods on eating behaviour and the characteristics of reticulo-rumen contents was studied in sheep by comparing 3 forages, a silage without additive (WAS), one with additive (FAS) and hay (H), prepared from the same cut green forage. The sheep were rumen fistulated. WAS was very badly and FAS poorly preserved while the hay was dried under favourable conditions. The forages were fed ad libitum and the dry matter (DM) intake was 1,054, 1,241 and 1,469 g/day for WAS, FAS and H respectively. There was a single feeding in the morning. At the main meal, DM intak

Influence of level of concentrate allocation and fermentability of forage fiber on chewing behavior and production of dairy cows.

Nine midlactation dairy cows were offered one of three mixed silage rations with neutral detergent fiber (NDF) that was similar in concentration but different in fermentability. Differences in fermentability were achieved by substituting a high quality alfalfa silage for a low quality alfalfa silage and substituting a combination of ryegrass and timothy silages for a barley silage. In addition, concentrate was allocated at 0.30, 0.82, or 1.37 kg of dry matter/kg of dry matter intake (DMI) from the mixed silage ration. As expected, the NDF content of the mixed silage ration did not differ, alth

The effect of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) silage chop length and inclusion rate within a total mixed ration on the ability of lactating dairy cows to cope with a short-term feed withholding and refeeding challenge.

The objectives of the study were (1) to test whether 6 h of feed deprivation followed by refeeding induces an acidosis challenge in dairy cattle and (2) to quantify the acidosis challenge mitigation potential of increased alfalfa silage concentration in the diet. Alfalfa silage constituted either 25 or 75% of forage dry matter (DM) replacing corn silage [low (LA) or high alfalfa (HA)] and was chopped to either 14 or 19 mm theoretical length [short (S) or long (L)]. Dietary treatments LAS, LAL, HAS, or HAL were offered to 4 rumen-cannulated Holstein dairy cattle (161 d in milk; 5th or 6th parit

[Consumption and ruminating behavior in sheep. 3. Experiments on infertile female sheep of different breeds with reference to feed type and feeding duration].

Ewes of the breeds merino fattening sheep, Stavropol merino and fertility hybrid were studied as to their consumption and ruminating behaviour after receiving a pelleted straw-concentrate mixture, maize silage and wilted silaged grass. During the feeding periods of 2 X 45 min or 2 X 180 min/d unlimited rations were available to the animals. With 86 min/d the sheep used the short feeding period nearly completely for feed intake. In the longer feeding period the sheep consumed 18% more feed in 161 min/d, ate more slowly, however, and ruminated somewhat less. In comparison with the straw-concentr

[Studies on the persistence of Clostridium botulinum on a cattle farm (author's transl)].

In the winter of 1978-1979, the presence of Clostridium botulinum was studied on a cattle farm, on which botulism caused by feeding the animals contaminated brewers' grains occurred in 1977. Cl. botulinum type B, the cause of mortality among cattle at the time, was detected in grass silage prepared in 1978. This organism was not detectable in a grass silage pit dating from 1977 and made prior to the outbreak of botulism. Investigations showed that proteolytic types of C. botulinum having grass as the substrate may produce large amounts of toxin. The production of toxin in grass silage pits may

Safety of hexamethylene tetramine for pigs, poultry, bovines, sheep, goats, rabbits and horses.

Following a request from the European Commission, the Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on hexamethylene tetramine (HMTA) for pigs, poultry, bovines, sheep, goats, rabbits and horses. In 2015, the FEEDAP Panel delivered an opinion on the safety and efficacy of HMTA. In that opinion, the Panel noted that the residues of HMTA in the silage amounted to about 5% of the inclusion level of 600 mg HMTA/kg fresh ensiling material. Since the HMTA residues in silage were analysed as formaldehyde, it was not possible to qu

Effect of concentrate level and feeding management on chewing activities, saliva production, and ruminal pH of lactating dairy cows.

Eight ruminally cannulated lactating Holstein cows were used in a double 4 x 4 Latin square to determine the effects of 1) proportion of barley silage [40, 50, and 60% of dry matter (DM)] in the diet, and 2) feeding a total mixed ration (TMR) compared with separate ingredients (SI) on chewing activities, saliva production, and ruminal pH. Although cows fed SI were offered a diet containing 50% silage, they actually consumed a diet containing 43% silage (DM basis). Dry matter intake and milk yield were similar for all diets (18.2 kg of DM/d and 27.2 kg/d, respectively). Cows fed the 40% silage

Evaluating Co-Ensiling Strategies to Valorise Duckweed as a Sustainable Feed Ingredient.

Duckweed (Lemnaceae) is a promising alternative feed crop, particularly in regions with nutrient surpluses and protein deficits, as it grows efficiently on nutrient-rich agricultural wastewater and provides protein-rich biomass. However, its high moisture content and rapid post-harvest spoilage pose major storage challenges. This study evaluated (co-)ensiling as a cost-effective preservation strategy for duckweed. Three separate experiments were conducted to assess the ensilability of duckweed alone and in combination with various agricultural co-substrates and additives, including corn silage
