Validity of nodule palpation in a Simulium neavei-transmitted onchocerciasis area in Uganda.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of palpable nodules as a rapid indicator for onchocerciasis endemicity in at-risk communities where Simulium neavei s.s. is the transmitting vector. We used data collected from 13 villages in Uganda to determine the validity of this rapid assessment method. The prevalence of palpable nodules was closely associated with the microfilarial prevalence (R2 = 0.603, P = 0.002), with the community filarial load (R2 = 0.620, P = 0.001) and with the prevalence of onchodermatitis. Nodule palpation in males more than 20 years old, using a cut-off

Modern medicine versus an ancient scourge: progress toward control of onchocerciasis.

Control of human onchocerciasis has been problematic. Vector control is practical and effective in only a circumscribed region of West Africa. Even in this area, control depends on meticulous monitoring of the vector and associated parasite species and precise application of requisite larvicide on a regular basis. As an alternative to vector control, chemotherapy-based control has been revolutionized by the finding that ivermectin, a novel semisynthetic macrocyclic lactone, is acceptable for mass distribution at the community level and that it represents an effective means of disease control w

[Ivermectin and the reduction of the rate of infection of simuliids in a forest focus of human onchocerciasis].

Eight patients from a forest onchocercian area "Grandes rivières", in Ivory Coast, were treated with a single oral dose of ivermectin (12 mg). The density of dermic microfilariae was estimated at days 0, 7 and 180; the mean numbers of ingested microfilariae and of developing larvae in the vectors S. soubrense-S. sanctipauli, engorged on the treated patients were recorded. Comparisons were made with non treated patients, having a similar density of microfilariae than the 8 treated patients at day 7. Results confirm the reduction induced by ivermectin of the dermic microfilarial density and the

Some unsolved problems in the epidemiology of onchocerciasis.

The descriptive epidemiology of onchocerciasis is well understood in the major foci of infection; a great stimulus to epidemiological research has been the implementation of the first control programme, which led to the eradication of infection in Kenya and, more recently, the vast Onchocerciasis Control Programme in the Volta River Basin of West Africa. However, there are still significant gaps in epidemiological knowledge which hamper the planning of future control programmes and the evaluation of current programmes. The four most important unsolved problems are: the refinement of field diag

Descriptive statistics for the larval stages of Onchocerca volvulus in host-seeking Simulium ochraceum.

In four localities of Guatemala with dissimilar intensities of onchocerciasis, filarial larvae were recovered by dissection from host-seeking Simulium ochraceum. Measurements made on over 600 Onchocerca volvulus larvae were used to characterize the early first, late first, second, and third developmental stages. The numerical attributes used to characterize the third larval stage and the associated means were body length (657.3 microns); anterior body width (18.9 microns); posterior body width (20.2 microns); distance from anterior end to nerve ring (87.9 microns), to junction of muscular and

The identification of the larvae of African Simulium.

Identification of the larval stages of African Simulium-vectors of onchocerciasis-is becoming increasingly important. In this paper attention is drawn to the principal morphological structures that are of value for identification and illustrations are given to indicate the various characters mentioned. The author provides an identification key to the larvae of the different species-groups of African Simulium and to the larvae of those species of most importance to man, and also presents a tentative key by which a larva may be placed in the probable instar of its development.

The Mouthparts of Female Blood-Feeding Frog-Biting Midges (Corethrellidae, Diptera).

Females of frog-biting midges (Corethrellidae) obtain their blood meals from male calling frogs. While the morphology of the feeding apparatus is well studied in hematophagous Diptera that impact humans, frog-biting midges have received far less attention. We provide a detailed micromorphological examination of the piercing blood-sucking proboscis and maxillary palpus in three Corethrella species using scanning electron microscopy and histological semi-thin sectioning. We also compare the sensilla found on the proboscis tip and the palpus of Corethrella with other piercing blood-sucking Dipter

Prevalence of River Epilepsy in the Orientale Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

BACKGROUND: An increased prevalence of epilepsy has been reported in many onchocerciasis endemic areas. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and distribution of epilepsy in an onchocerciasis endemic region in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). DESIGN/METHODS: An epilepsy prevalence study was carried out in 2014, in two localities of the Bas-Uélé district, an onchocerciasis endemic region in the Orientale Province of the DRC. Risk factors for epilepsy were identified using a random effects logistic regression model and the distribution of epilepsy cases was investigated using the M

Comprehensive industry-relevant black soldier fly bioconversion characterisation by a novel chamber system.

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) efficiently convert biowaste into valuable animal feed. Sustainable and reliable bioconversion is desirable to achieve optimal economic and environmental outcomes. Thus, science and industry require an accessible research platform to study complex bioconversion processes under conditions mirroring industrial-scale settings. In this study, industry-relevant respiration chambers were designed, tested, and replicated for BSFL feeding trials. Each open-circuit chamber housed three industrial rearing crates. The substrate/frass and air temperature, mass change, NH3 a

Habitat preference of blackflies in Omo Gibe river basin (southwest Ethiopia): Implications for onchocerciasis elimination and control.

Ecological control of blackflies (Simulium damnosum) can be an alternative or additional tool to enhance onchocerciasis elimination efforts. However, limited research is conducted on the ecology of blackflies in Ethiopia. In this study, we determined the habitat preference of blackfly larvae and their relationship with aquatic macroinvertebrate predators in the Omo Gibe river basin of southwest Ethiopia. Environmental and biological data were collected from 150 sampling sites during both dry and wet seasons in 2019. Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) were used to identify factors affecting the o

The preparatory phase for ground larviciding implementation for chocerciasis control in the Meme River Basin in South West Cameroon: the COUNTDOWN Consortium alternative strategy implementation trial.

BACKGROUND: Onchocerciasis control using ivermectin alone has been achieved in some endemic savannah zones of Africa. In the forest regions, the co-endemicity with Loa loa has led to severe adverse events (SAEs) resulting in poor adherence of community members to ivermectin mass drug administration (MDA). This may jeopardize achieving the interruption of transmission of onchocerciasis. Therefore, to accelerate the elimination of onchocerciasis in L. loa co-endemic zones, alternative treatment strategies (ATS) including ground larviciding may be necessary. This study aimed at identifying Simuli

Isolation, identification and functional profile of excretory-secretory peptides from Onchocerca ochengi.

Parasitic helminths excrete or secrete a variety of functional molecules into the internal milieu of their mammalian hosts and arthropod vectors which reveal distinct immunomodulatory and other biological activities. We identified and initially characterized the low molecular weight peptide composition of the secretome from the filarial parasite Onchocerca ochengi. A total of 85 peptides were purified by liquid chromatography and further characterized by mass spectrometry. 72 of these peptides were derived from already described Onchocerca proteins and 13 peptide sequences are included in the

Avian simuliotoxicosis: outbreak in Louisiana.

From April 20 to May 10, 2010, multiple species of birds were seen at the Louisiana State University (LSU) Zoological Medicine Department for a disease syndrome characterized by acute lethargy, generalized subcutaneous petechiae, vasculitis, and death caused by a black fly identified as Simulium meridionale. Twenty psittacine birds presented with severe depression and multifocal subcutaneous hemorrhages over the body and especially noted in the featherless areas of the head and neck. Ten out of 20 clinical cases seen survived on a treatment regimen consisting of intravenous fluid therapy, anti

In vitro cultivation and development of Onchocerca volvulus and Onchocerca lienalis microfilariae.

Onchocerca volvulus and O. lienalis skin-derived microfilariae (mf) were cultured in vitro; parasite viability was assessed at intervals by measuring their ability to develop in Simulium ornatum. In the presence of monkey kidney feeder cells, both species retained full viability when cultured for up to 5 hr before intrathoracic injection into Simulium. In the absence of feeder cells and in contrast to O. lienalis, O. volvulus mf rapidly lost their viability. In further trials (including feeder cells), O. volvulus mf retained full viability for 14 days, while O. lienalis mf retained full viabil
