The effects of the arm swing on biomechanical and physiological aspects of roller ski skating.

This study analyzed the biomechanical and physiological effects of the arm swing in roller ski skating, and compared leg-skating (i.e. ski skating without poles) using a pronounced arm swing (SWING) with leg-skating using locked arms (LOCKED). Sixteen elite male cross-country skiers performed submaximal stages at 10, 15 and 20kmh(-1) on a 2% inclined treadmill in the two techniques. SWING demonstrated higher peak push-off forces and a higher force impulse at all speeds, but a longer cycle length only at the highest speed (all P<.05), indicating a lower force effectiveness with SWING at the two

Gastroenteritis outbreak caused by waterborne norovirus at a New Zealand ski resort.

In July 2006, public health services investigated an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis among staff and visitors of a popular ski resort in southern New Zealand. The source of the outbreak was a drinking water supply contaminated by human sewage. The virological component of the investigation played a major role in confirming the source of the outbreak. Drinking water, source stream water, and 31 fecal specimens from gastroenteritis outbreak cases were analyzed for the presence of norovirus (NoV). Water samples were concentrated by ultrafiltration, and real-time reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PC

Boarder belly: splenic injuries resulting from ski and snowboarding accidents.

OBJECTIVE: Snowboarding has increased in popularity worldwide, with an associated increase in injuries suffered by its participants with a significant proportion of these injuries being severe. We sought to understand the risk of sustaining a splenic injury in snowboarders as compared to skiers, and whether there are noteworthy differences in their characteristics at hospital admission. METHODS: A 10-year retrospective review was conducted on patients with splenic injury resulting from snowboarding or skiing, who were admitted to the principle ED and referral hospital servicing several busy d

Embryotoxic effects of SKI 2053R, a new potential anticancer agent, in rats.

SKI 2053R, cis-malonato[(4R,5R)-4,5-bis(aminomethyl)-2-isopropyl-1,3-dioxolan e] platinum(II), is a newly developed antitumor platinum complex derived from cisplatin. Preclinical studies suggest that it may have greater antitumor activity and lower toxicity than cisplatin. The potential of SKI 2053R to induce embryotoxicity was investigated in the Sprague-Dawley rat. One hundred mated rats (sperm in vaginal lavage = Day 0) were distributed among three treated groups and a control group. SKI 2053R was administered intravenously to pregnant rats from Days 6 to 16 of gestation at dose levels of 0

Occupational dermatoses from exposure to epoxy resin compounds in a ski factory.

Of 22 workers in a ski factory, occupational allergic contact dermatitis was found in 8. 6 were sensitive to epoxy resin compounds, i.e., epoxy resins, hardeners or diluents, 1 to cobalt in glass-fiber reinforcements, and 1 to formaldehyde in a urea-formaldehyde glue and a lacquer. 4 workers had irritant contact dermatitis from epoxy resin compounds, lacquers, sanding dust, or glass-fiber dust. 3 had contact allergy from a new sensitizer, diethyleneglycol diglycidyl ether, in a reactive diluent. Immediate transfer of workers sensitized to epoxy resin from epoxy exposure prevents aggravation of

Performance of Alpine Touring Boots When Used in Alpine Ski Bindings.

Alpine touring (AT) equipment is designed for ascending mountains and snow skiing down backcountry terrain. Skiers have been observed using AT boots in alpine (not made for Alpine Touring) ski bindings. We tested the effect on the retention-release characteristics of AT boots used in alpine bindings. Ten AT ski boots and 5 alpine ski boots were tested in 8 models of alpine ski bindings using an ASTM F504-05 (2012) apparatus. Thirty-one percent of the AT boots released appropriately when used in alpine ski bindings. One alpine binding released appropriately for all alpine and AT boots tested; 2

Chronic expression of Ski induces apoptosis and represses autophagy in cardiac myofibroblasts.

Inappropriate cardiac interstitial remodeling is mediated by activated phenoconverted myofibroblasts. The synthesis of matrix proteins by these cells is triggered by both chemical and mechanical stimuli. Ski is a repressor of TGFβ1/Smad signaling and has been described as possessing anti-fibrotic properties within the myocardium. We hypothesized that overexpression of Ski in myofibroblasts will induce an apoptotic response, which may either be supported or opposed by autophagic flux. We used primary myofibroblasts (activated fibroblasts) which were sourced from whole heart preparations that we

Multifragmentary distal crural fracture ski injury in an athlete: a case report.

While alpine skiing, a professional skater fell. He was examined at the nearest hospital and diagnosis was distal crural fracture with multifragmentary tibial metaphysis. The patient left the hospital with only temporary immobilization after the suggested treatment for his injury was crural amputation. Thirteen hours after injury he arrived at his home hospital. He was immediately operated on to perform osteosynthesis on his left lower leg. The healing of the damaged soft tissue as well as the bones was excellent even though Sudeck's syndrome appeared. Six month after injury he returned to ska

Ski is involved in transcriptional regulation by the repressor and full-length forms of Gli3.

Transcription factor Glioblastoma-3 (Gli3) is cleaved in the anterior region of the limb bud to generate its repressor form. In contrast, Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling from the posterior zone of polarizing activity blocks Gli3 processing and then induces the expression of Gli3 target genes, including Gli1. Here we report that the Ski corepressor binds to Gli3 and recruits the histone deacetylase complex. The Gli3-mediated repression was impaired by anti-Ski antibody and in Ski-deficient fibroblasts, and Shh-induced Gli1 gene transcription mediated by full-length Gli3 was inhibited by Ski. Fur

Real-time multisite invasive neural recording during downhill skiing in Parkinson's disease: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Invasive recording of neural activity provides valuable insights into Parkinson's disease (PD). Bidirectional sensing devices enable wireless neural data collection during everyday activities, but neural signals during complex outdoor sports remain unexplored. METHODS: We recorded neural data from a 57-year-old PD patient using bilateral implanted pulse generators connected to subthalamic nucleus (STN) and motor cortex leads. Recordings were performed in two settings: in-clinic during a computer-controlled task and outdoors during downhill skiing. Neural data were analyzed for p
