An ion-exchange fractionation technique for the separation of total resin acid and neutral fractions of unmodified colophony is described. The allergic potential of these fractions was assessed by patch testing colophony-sensitive individuals, and this showed that both the neutral components and the resin acids play an important role in colophony sensitization. A damaged skin forms a health hazard in flower-bulb growers as it enables higher permeation rates for pesticides than normal skin. Therefore, an investigation was performed into the skin condition of 103 bulb growers and 49 controls. Contact dermatitis of the hands was of the same order (11 and 10%) in both groups. BACKGROUND: Allergic and irritant reactions on patch testing can be difficult to differentiate clinically. We aim to identify factors associated with irritant reactions and correlate skin barrier function, measured in the form of transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
METHODS: Consecutive patients undergoing patch testing at a tertiary hospital dermatology department were included. Primary demographic data were collected along with the results of patch testing and clinical confidence scores. TEWL was measured on the volar forearm using a Tewameter TM Hex skin probe at the Day 2 reading.

43 patients with suspected adverse reactions to ophthalmic medicaments were tested using three different methods: normal patch test on back skin (ENH), patch test on stripped back skin (HSA) and on scarified skin of the forearm (SKT). The ENH was positive in only 9 patients (20.0%) with one of the used preparations whereas on stripped skin positive reactions were observed in another 14 patients (32.6%).
