Single-slice computed tomography and anthropometric skinfold analysis for evaluation of facial lipoatrophy in HIV-infected patients.

We assessed the value of computed tomography (CT) and anthropometric skinfold analysis for evaluating subcutaneous facial fat in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients. Patients with facial lipoatrophy had smaller areas of facial adipose tissue, lower ratios of adipose tissue area to total tissue area of the face, and lower malar skinfold values, compared with patients without facial wasting. CT may be a useful technique to diagnose and monitor facial lipoatrophy.

[Lipodystrophy syndrome. Therapeutic progress is still pending].

A common problem seen with the long-term use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is the HIV-associated lipodystrophy syndrome. Clinical signs include a loss of peripheral subcutaneous fatty tissue, an increase in visceral or local fat, and altered glucose and lipid metabolism. The physical changes frequently impair quality of life, and the patient's adherence to treatment regimens. Metabolic changes may possibly represent cardiovascular risks with incalculable consequences over the long term. Although the lipodystrophy syndrome was first described in 1998. It still lacks a definiti

The influence of area of application on sensitization by dinitrochlorobenzene.

We have investigated the effect on sensitization of altering the area of application of 2,4,dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) at a constant dose per unit area. We showed that, when an area of less than 1 cm2 is used, this area is critical in determining the degree of sensitization. This contrasts with previous work that showed, for larger areas, an alteration in the area of application had little effect on sensitization, whereas keeping the area constant and increasing the concentration of DNCB increased the degree of sensitization. We suggest that not only is the amount of antigen important in dete

Resting metabolic rate and body composition of achondroplastic dwarfs.

Indirect calorimetry was used to measure resting metabolic rates (RMR), and densitometry and anthropometry were used to measure body fat and fat-free masses of 32 adults with very short stature. Twenty-seven of them were achondroplastic dwarfs. Their results were compared to those obtained from 103 lean and obese adults with normal heights. All 32 dwarfs had distinctly greater RMR per kg fat-free mass by densitometry than adults with average stature. However, there was a wide variation in the RMR among dwarfs, which was independent of leanness or obesity. In spite of increased RMR, obesity amo

Changes in body protein, body potassium, and lean body mass during total parenteral nutrition.

Lean body mass by anthropometry (AMLBM), total body potassium (TBK), and total body nitrogen (TBN) by prompt gamma analysis, are reported in 38 malnourished patients during total parenteral nutrition. Over long periods (greater than 2 months) TBN increased 32% while AMLBM and TBK rose only by 9.2 and 9.5%, respectively. Changes in AMLBM and in K were significantly correlated, but changes in nitrogen were not correlated with either. From short-term studies, the same conclusions can be obtained; although there are changes in lean body mass and in potassium, there is no correlation with such chan

[The aging changes of biological variability (author's transl)].

1. Examples are given to justify the concept that biological variability is dependent on age. 2. It appears possible that the variability of fundamental parameters of those with a strong genetic fixation increases toward the middle of the life span and decreases again in the senium. 3. The variability of most variables increases with age. The more complex the variables, the greater the increase. 4. Originally unitary statistical populations may split up into several populations in the course of life. These will then require separate statistical treatment. 5. Our considerations seem to have som

Is ovarian hyperstimulation associated with higher blood pressure in 4-year-old IVF offspring? Part II: an explorative causal inference approach.

STUDY QUESTION: What causal relationships underlie the associations between ovarian stimulation, the IVF procedure, parental-, fertility- and child characteristics, and blood pressure (BP) and anthropometrics of 4-year-old IVF children? SUMMARY ANSWER: Causal models compatible with the data suggest the presence of positive direct effects of controlled ovarian hyperstimulation as applied in IVF (COH-IVF) on systolic blood pressure (SBP) percentiles and subscapular skinfold thickness. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Increasing evidence suggests that IVF is associated with higher blood pressure and alte

Effects of early growth on blood pressure of infants of British European and South Asian origin at one year of age: the Manchester children's growth and vascular health study.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate early influences of postnatal growth on blood pressure (BP) in healthy, British-born South Asian and European origin infants. We tested the hypotheses that South Asian infants would be smaller in all body dimensions (length and weight) with higher relative truncal skinfold thickness at birth, and that increased (central) adiposity and accelerated growth up to 1 year would be associated with higher BP in both ethnic groups. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Five hundred and sixty infants were followed prospectively from birth to 3 and/or 12 months

Androgenic and estrogenic indices in human newborns and infants: the MIREC-ID study.

Prenatal sex steroid exposure plays an important role in determining child development. Yet, measurement of prenatal hormonal exposure has been limited by the paucity of newborn/infant data and the invasiveness of fetal hormonal sampling. Here we provide descriptive data from the MIREC-ID study (n=173 girls; 162 boys) on a range of minimally invasive physical indices thought to reflect prenatal exposure to androgens [anogenital distances (AGDs); penile length/width, scrotal/vulvar pigmentation], to estrogens [vaginal maturation index (VMI) - the degree of maturation of vaginal wall cells] or t
