Antimony resistant bacteria isolated from Budúcnosť adit (Pezinok-Kolársky vrch deposit) in western Slovakia.

Potentially toxic elements (PTE), such as antimony (Sb), are dangerous putative contaminants for ground and surface waters around abandoned mines and ore deposits in Slovakia. Nearby mines antimony is commonly coprecipitated in ochre sediments precipitated from Fe-rich drainage waters and, therefore, these sites function as natural scavengers of this metalloid. Bacteria are well known to contribute to the process of redox state maintenance, biosorption and bioaccumulation of antimony and, consequently, to antimony precipitation or release from iron oxides complexes. Here we isolated 48 bacteri

Conjunctival Swab Findings in 484 COVID-19 Patients in Four Hospital Centers in Slovakia.

Since 2020, the COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) has quickly become a worldwide health problem. Ophthalmologists must deal with symptoms as well. For the positive detection in the conjunctival sac swab in COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Slovakia during March 2021 in four hospital centers, we used a test based on a polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In a group of 484 patients, 264 males (55%) and 220 females (45%) with clinical symptoms were identified with COVID-19 as a clinical diagnosis. The PCR test swab results from the conjunctival sac taken on the same day were positive in 58 patients

On Pilot Massive COVID-19 Testing by Antigen Tests in Europe. Case Study: Slovakia.

This paper provides a summary of mass COVID-19 testing of almost the entire population in Slovakia by antigen tests. We focused on the results delivered by two testing rounds and analyzed the benefits and weaknesses of such type of testing. We prepared mathematical models to critically examine the effectiveness of the testing, and we also estimated the number of potentially sick people that would become infected by those marked as positives by antigen tests. Our calculations have proven that antigen testing in hotspots can flatten the curve of daily newly reported cases significantly, but in r

Human Dirofilaria repens infections diagnosed in Slovakia in the last 10 years (2007-2017).

Human dirofilariosis is currently considered to be an emerging zoonosis of Central Europe with climate change and globalization playing a key role in its spreading. Additionally, the occurrence of Dirofilaria spp. is strongly subject to a certain number of microfilaremic dogs and the presence of the mosquito vectors. Both conditions are fulfilled in Slovakia. The first human case of autochthonous dirofilariosis in Slovakia was diagnosed in 2007, 2 years after the infection had been observed in the Slovak dog population. Since then, a total of 12 human cases caused by Dirofilaria repens have be

Temporal trends, diagnostics, and outcomes of pediatric nontuberculous mycobacterial disease in Slovakia (2017-2024).

BACKGROUND: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are rare but emerging pathogens in pediatric populations, particularly in countries where BCG vaccination has been discontinued. Their diagnosis is often delayed due to nonspecific symptoms and limited microbiological sensitivity. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all pediatric patients with confirmed or clinically probable NTM disease, diagnosed at the National Institute for Pediatric Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases in Slovakia between 2017 and 2024. Medical records from 2012 to 2016 were screened, but no cases fulfillin

Human alveolar echinococcosis in Slovakia: Epidemiology and genetic diversity of Echinococcus multilocularis, 2000-2023.

Human alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a serious parasitic disease caused by larval stages of Echinococcus multilocularis. Between January 2000 and October 2023, 137 AE cases were confirmed in Slovakia. The average annual incidence increased from 0.031 per 100,000 inhabitants between 2000 and 2011, to an average of 0.187 since 2012, i.e. about six times. Among patients, 45.3% were men and 54.7% were women; the mean age at the time of diagnosis was 52.8 years. Most cases were diagnosed in the age groups 51-60 years and 61-70 years (33 cases each), and eight patients fell into the age category ≤

Prevalence of relapsing fever spirochete Borrelia miyamotoi in Ixodes ricinus ticks from eastern Slovakia.

Borrelia miyamotoi, recurrent fever borrelia, pathogenic to humans, has been found recently in Ixodes ricinus ticks. There is still little information about its circulation in nature and potential local impact on human health as well as the occurrence in natural localities. In our study, a total of 1609 ticks (745 nymphs, 358 females and 506 males) collected from different localities in eastern Slovakia were analysed using a polymerase chain reaction targeting a gene encoding glycerophosphodiester phosphodiesterase (glpQ), which is specific to the Borrelia species in the relapsing fever group.

Prevalence of Coxiella burneti antibodies in wild ruminants in kaveeany zoo, kosice, Eastern Slovakia.

Coxiella burnetii is an obligate intracellular agent that causes Q fever in humans and animals. The most important reservoirs of C. burnetii in nature are small wild rodents, but infection was also demonstrated in other animals, including ruminants. Samples of blood were obtained from 4 mouflons, 60 fallow deer, 9 Cameroun goats, 8 Carpathian goats, and 8 Cameroun sheep living in a zoo. Antibodies to phase I and phase II C. burnetii antigens were determined in sera by ELISA. Antibody titres were detected in the range 1:100-1:200. The serum prevalence of phase II and phase I antibodies to C. bu

Progress in Achieving LDL Cholesterol Target Levels in a High-Risk Patient Population in Slovakia.

Background/Objectives: The management of dyslipidaemia in Slovakia has undergone significant changes in recent years, particularly through the relaxation of prescription restrictions for existing medications and the introduction of new innovative molecules. Achieving target levels of LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) plays a key role in preventing the onset and progression of atherosclerosis-related cardiovascular (CV) diseases. The aim of this study was to analyse how these changes have affected the effectiveness of reaching target LDL-C levels in patients at very high CV risk. Methods: This project wa

Too young to die: social inequalities and infant mortality in marginalized Roma communities in Slovakia.

BACKGROUND: In Slovakia, several tens of thousands of persons live in extremely poor living conditions in segregated Roma settlements. We can hardly find populations with such a short life expectancy and a high risk of death in infancy anywhere in Europe. The inadequate infrastructure, catastrophic housing conditions, deteriorated environmental quality, high unemployment and dependence on social transfers in combination with social and geographical segregation or negative behavioral aspects markedly affect their health status and mortality rates. Despite this, only little attention has hithert

Workplace Mobbing Among Nurses in Slovakia: The Impact of Education, Workplace Type, and Job Position.

INTRODUCTION: Workplace bullying, a widespread phenomenon, significantly impacts interpersonal relationships, mental health, professional performance, and organizational efficiency in healthcare. Defined as repeated behaviors intended to intimidate or degrade, bullying thrives in hierarchical, high-stress environments like hospitals, where nurses face disproportionate risk. Such behaviors harm morale, increase turnover, and jeopardize patient safety through errors and negligence. Understanding its prevalence and contributors is essential for fostering healthier work environments and improving

The fox tapeworm, Echinococcus multilocularis, in grey wolves and dogs in Slovakia: epidemiology and genetic analysis.

Echinococcus multilocularis, the causative agent of human alveolar echinococcosis, is an important emerging parasite in the northern hemisphere. In epidemiological studies, the highest attention is being paid to foxes as the main reservoir hosts responsible for geographic expansion from multiple focal populations and the invasion of urban habitats, but little information is available on the parasite distribution in other carnivores. Hence, the study was designed to obtain updated information about the occurrence and genetic diversity of E. multilocularis in grey wolves and dogs in Slovakia. Fa
