Supervised classification of bradykinesia in Parkinson's disease from smartphone videos.

BACKGROUND: Slowness of movement, known as bradykinesia, is the core clinical sign of Parkinson's and fundamental to its diagnosis. Clinicians commonly assess bradykinesia by making a visual judgement of the patient tapping finger and thumb together repetitively. However, inter-rater agreement of expert assessments has been shown to be only moderate, at best. AIM: We propose a low-cost, contactless system using smartphone videos to automatically determine the presence of bradykinesia. METHODS: We collected 70 videos of finger-tap assessments in a clinical setting (40 Parkinson's hands, 30 co

A digital biomarker of diabetes from smartphone-based vascular signals.

The global burden of diabetes is rapidly increasing, from 451 million people in 2019 to 693 million by 20451. The insidious onset of type 2 diabetes delays diagnosis and increases morbidity2. Given the multifactorial vascular effects of diabetes, we hypothesized that smartphone-based photoplethysmography could provide a widely accessible digital biomarker for diabetes. Here we developed a deep neural network (DNN) to detect prevalent diabetes using smartphone-based photoplethysmography from an initial cohort of 53,870 individuals (the 'primary cohort'), which we then validated in a separate co

Smartphone screening for neonatal jaundice via ambient-subtracted sclera chromaticity.

Jaundice is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in the newborn. Globally, early identification and home monitoring are significant challenges in reducing the incidence of jaundice-related neurological damage. Smartphone cameras are promising as colour-based screening tools as they are low-cost, objective and ubiquitous. We propose a novel smartphone method to screen for neonatal jaundice by imaging the sclera. It does not rely on colour calibration cards or accessories, which may facilitate its adoption at scale and in less economically developed regions. Our approach is to explicitly add

Atrial fibrillation screening with photo-plethysmography through a smartphone camera.

AIMS: This cross-sectional study was set up to assess the feasibility of mass screening for atrial fibrillation (AF) with only the use of a smartphone. METHODS AND RESULTS: A local newspaper published an article, allowing to subscribe for a 7-day screening period to detect AF. Screening was performed through an application that uses photo-plethysmography (PPG) technology by exploiting a smartphone camera. Participants received instructions on how to perform correct measurements twice daily, with notifications pushed through the application's software. In case of heart rhythm irregularities, r

A smartphone-based automatic diagnosis system for facial nerve palsy.

Facial nerve palsy induces a weakness or loss of facial expression through damage of the facial nerve. A quantitative and reliable assessment system for facial nerve palsy is required for both patients and clinicians. In this study, we propose a rapid and portable smartphone-based automatic diagnosis system that discriminates facial nerve palsy from normal subjects. Facial landmarks are localized and tracked by an incremental parallel cascade of the linear regression method. An asymmetry index is computed using the displacement ratio between the left and right side of the forehead and mouth re

A smartphone-integrated portable fluorescent biosensor for on-site detection of antibiotics.

BACKGROUND: The widespread antibiotic residues pose significant risks for public health, food and environmental safety, necessitating rapid on-site monitoring tools, while conventional methods for antibiotics detection often rely on complex instrumentation, limiting their field applicability. This study presented a versatile portable aptasensor utilizing pseudoisocyanine (PIC) fluorescent dye for different antibiotics detection. The sensing mechanism was based on target-induced displacement of the dye from the aptamer-dye complex, resulting in fluorescence quenching. The interactions among PIC

Dystextia due to impairment in spatial operation on a smartphone: A case report.

Smartphone texting has become indispensable in modern life. Although dystextia (texting disability) has been reported, dystextia without aphasia or other cognitive impairment remains rare, and its pathophysiology is not fully understood. In Japanese text entry, the consonant is selected first on the screen, and the vowel is then determined by slide direction. Thus, accurate text input likely requires a sequence of processes, including segmentation of morae into consonants and vowels, followed by the spatial operation corresponding to each. Here, we report a patient with dystextia associated wi

Smartphone-assisted ELISA for the detection of Ehrlichia canis antibodies in dogs.

Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis (CME), caused by Ehrlichia canis, has emerged as a significant infectious disease in Latin America, including Argentina, where underdiagnosis remains a challenge due to limited access to laboratory infrastructure. In this context, developing accessible diagnostic tools deployable outside conventional laboratory settings is essential. In this study, we developed a smartphone-assisted, point-of-care (POC) ELISA platform for decentralized CME diagnosis, designed to operate without specialized laboratory equipment. Two peptide-based ELISAs using the E. canis peptides

Network analysis of interactions of rumination and anxiety on smartphone dependence symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Rumination and anxiety have been posited as correlates of smartphone dependence (SPD). However, little is known regarding how the components of both affect SPD symptoms at subtle levels. Therefore, we used the network analysis approach to identify the connections at a micro level to provide possible interventions for reducing SPD symptoms. METHODS: Using symptom-level network analysis, we used the ruminative response scale-10, the generalized anxiety disorder scale-7, and the mobile phone addiction index scale-17 to investigate Chinese preservice teachers (M age = 21.1, N = 1160).
