Skin-deep resilience in the Black women's experiences living with lupus study.

OBJECTIVE: The skin-deep resilience hypothesis suggests that Black Americans from disadvantaged backgrounds who attain academic or professional success despite social obstacles may paradoxically experience adverse physical health outcomes. This study examined skin-deep resilience among a sample of Black women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a disease sensitive to psychosocial stress. METHOD: Data were from 426 Black women with SLE from metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia, United States, recruited to the Black Women's Experiences Living with Lupus (BeWELL) Study. Measures of Anxiety Disorder Symptoms in Adolescents.

This study examines select psychometric properties (i.e., internal reliability, and factorial, convergent, discriminant, and criterion validity) of three commonly-used measures of anxiety disorder symptoms in adolescents in the context of multi-trait, multi-method matrix analyses. A sample of 331 adolescents (age M = 17.1; 75.3% white; 71.0% female) completed three self-report scales that assess symptoms of separation anxiety, social anxiety, panic, and generalized anxiety, as well as measures of depression, experiential avoidance, and intolerance of uncertainty. Measures of panic disorder sym

The association of safety-net program participation with government perceptions, welfare stigma, and discrimination.

Safety-net programs in the United States offered critical support to counter food insecurity and poverty during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) are both means-tested programs with significant benefits. Take-up of SNAP and EITC is lower in California than nationwide and reasons for this difference are unclear. We examined associations of participation in SNAP and receipt of the EITC and perceptions of the US government, 2 types of welfare stigma (program stigma and social stigma), and perceived

Stigma as a Social Determinant of Health: A Policy Classification Framework and Call to Action.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points Stigma functions as a social determinant of health (SDOH), producing population health inequities through resource deprivation, social exclusion, constrained health care, physiological stress, and diminished agency-yet it lacks formal SDOH classification. Because stigma operates as a fundamental cause of health inequalities, policy responses must extend beyond health care systems to encompass housing, employment, education, and social participation. Discrimination is already classified as an SDOH; formal stigma classification would address the broader ecosystem that e

Invited Commentary: The Need for Repeated Measures and Other Methodological Considerations When Investigating Discrimination as a Contributor to Health.

To determine potential measurement error related to the assessment of lifetime discrimination, Van Dyke et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2022;191(3):370-378) investigated inconsistencies in reporting of racial, socioeconomic status, and sex discrimination over time among Black and White adults enrolled in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study. The authors found that "ever" reports of discrimination (as assessed by the Experiences of Discrimination Scale) decreased over time and that populations who most experience discrimination (i.e., Black/African-American people, younge

Internalized Stigma and Psychiatric Morbidity among Patients with Psoriasis: A Study from North India.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis associated with psychological morbidity. Like mental illness, it is also associated with stigma. Very few studies from India have evaluated stigma experienced by patients with psoriasis. AIM OF THE STUDY: To study stigma in patients with psoriasis (in the form of internalized stigma, perceived stigma, and social-participation-restriction stigma) and its relationship with demographic and clinical variables. METHODOLOGY: 104 patients with psoriasis assessed on the internalized stigma of mental illness scale (ISMIS), explanatory model i

Individual attitudes and perceived social norms: Reports on HIV/AIDS-related stigma among service providers in China.

This study examined HIV/AIDS-related stigma among Chinese service providers by comparing their personal attitudes toward people living with HIV/AIDS with their perception of social norms related to people living with HIV/AIDS. We randomly selected three provincial hospitals, four city/prefecture hospitals, 10 county hospitals,18 township health clinics, and 54 village clinics from Yunnan, China. Doctors and nurses were randomly sampled proportionally to the doctor–nurse ratio of each hospital or clinic. Lab technicians were over-sampled in order to include an adequate representation in the ana

Hospitalization, interpersonal and personal factors of social anxiety among COVID-19 survivors at the six-month follow-up after hospital treatment: the minority stress model.

BACKGROUND: As a highly infectious disease with human-to-human transmission characteristics, COVID-19 has caused panic in the general public. Those who have recovered from COVID-19 may experience discrimination and internalized stigma. They may be more likely to worry about social interaction and develop social anxiety. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the associations among hospitalization factors, social/interpersonal factors, personal factors, and social anxiety to reveal the mechanism of social anxiety in COVID-19 survivors. METHODS: A cross-sectional, multicenter telephone survey was

Relationship between diet-related behavior and caries in a group of 14-year-old Danish children.

Dietary factors related to dental caries may be both biological and behavioral. In the present study the relative contribution of a number of behavioral characteristics is analyzed in order to differentiate between caries-active (CA) and caries-inactive (CI) children. The study group comprised 49 CA and 55 CI 14-yr-old Danish children, constituting the dichotomous dependent variable. Several variables related to the social and cultural context in which food and snack consumption takes place were studied. Subsequently, their relative contributions to the discriminant function (CA vs. CI) were e

Evaluating the association between upstream perceived individual and neighborhood determinants of health and intensity of breast cancer screening.

Exposure to negative perceived individual and neighborhood determinants disproportionately impacts marginalized groups and can profoundly shape health behavior. We assessed the hypothesized relationship between exposure to adverse perceived individual and neighborhood determinants and rates of mammography. In this cohort study, we identified 31 568 female participants aged 40-74 without history of breast cancer in the All of Us Research Program. Participant-reported levels of perceived stress, everyday discrimination, perceived neighborhood physical disorder, perceived neighborhood social cohe

Internalizing Profiles of Homeless Adults: Investigating Links Between Perceived Ostracism and Need-Threat.

Social ostracism among the homeless is a prevailing problem, yet few studies have focused on whether internalizing psychopathology moderates the links between feeling ostracized and perceiving threats to fundamental human needs. This study used a person-oriented approach to identify commonly occurring profiles of internalizing psychopathology characterized by symptoms of social anxiety, generalized anxiety, and depression (Low, Medium, and High Internalizers) among homeless participants residing in London, United Kingdom (N = 114; age range = 18-74; M age = 46; 25% women). In their own words: reports of stigma and genetic discrimination by people at risk for Huntington disease in the International RESPOND-HD study.

Genetic discrimination may be experienced in the day-to-day lives of people at risk for Huntington disease (HD), encompassing occurrences in the workplace, when seeking insurance, within social relationships, and during other daily encounters. At-risk individuals who have tested either positive or negative for the genetic expansion that causes HD, as well as at-risk persons with a 50% chance for developing the disorder but have not had DNA testing completed the International RESPOND-HD (I-RESPOND-HD) survey. One of the study's purposes was to examine perceptions of genetic stigmatization and d

Strength Amid Strain: Coping, Racism, and Racial Socialization Stress in Black Caregivers.

This study examined Black caregivers' affective responses to racial discrimination (i.e., the extent to which they reported being bothered by discriminatory experiences) and how these responses were associated with stress associated with navigating racial socialization practices (i.e., stress during conversations about race and racism with children). We further tested whether coping self-efficacy beliefs (i.e., problem-focused coping, suppressing unpleasant emotions and thoughts, and seeking support from family and friends) moderated the association between racial discrimination and racial soc

Individual differences in high-level biological motion tasks correlate with autistic traits.

Human actions are rich in social cues and play an essential role in interacting with the social environment. Hence, the perception of biological motion (i.e., movement elicited by humans and other animals) is considered to be an important gauge of a person's social cognition capacities. It has been well-documented that Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is associated with difficulties in social interactions. In the present study, we examined whether individual differences in biological motion perception relate to the degree of autistic traits among people in the typically-developing population. We

A national sample of 295 transgender adults and their nontransgender siblings were surveyed about demographics, perceptions of social support, and violence, harassment, and discrimination. Transwomen were older than the other 4 groups. Transwomen, transmen, and genderqueers were more highly educated than nontransgender sisters and nontransgender brothers, but did not have a corresponding higher income. Other demographic differences between groups were found in religion, geographic mobility, relationship status, and sexual orientation. Transgender people were more likely to experience harassmen

Sexual risk as an outcome of social oppression: data from a probability sample of Latino gay men in three U.S. cities.

Based on data from a probability sample of 912 Latino gay men in 3 U.S. cities, a multivariate model of sexual risk was tested, including experiences of homophobia, racism, and poverty as predictors. Participants reported multiple instances of verbal and physical abuse, rude mistreatment, and discrimination on account of their sexual orientation and their race or ethnicity. Many reported experiences of poverty, such as inability to pay for basic necessities of food or shelter. Men who reported more instances of social discrimination and financial hardship were more psychologically distressed a
