BACKGROUND: The microbiome provides multiple benefits to animal hosts that can profoundly impact health and behavior. Microbiomes are well-characterized in humans and other animals in controlled settings, yet assessments of wild bird microbial communities remain vastly understudied. This is particularly true for pelagic seabirds with unique life histories that differ from terrestrial bird species. This study was designed to examine how morphological, genetic, environmental, and social factors affect the microbiome of a burrow-nesting seabird species, Leach's storm petrel (Oceanodroma leucorhoa

Problematic social media use (PSMU) has been increasingly associated with various psychological vulnerabilities; however, findings remain mixed, particularly among university students and in non-Western contexts. This study aimed to examine the associations between PSMU and psychological factors including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, social anxiety, and self-esteem among university students, as well as to explore the role of selected sociodemographic and usage-related characteristics. This cross-sectional study included 179 university students aged 18 to 25 years.

The occurrence, transmission, and spread of infectious diseases are closely linked to environmental factors. As climate change intensifies, shifts in temperature, precipitation, and extreme weather events are modifying pathogen survival, vector ecology, and the geographical range of infectious diseases. At the same time, ecosystem degradation, land-use change, urbanization, poverty, and social unrest further shape population exposure, healthcare access, and disease vulnerability. This narrative review synthesizes the mechanisms by which physical, ecological, and social environmental factors in

Flow is a deeply immersive psychological state characterized by intense concentration, intrinsic motivation, and a perceived balance between challenge and skill. Although prior research has examined flow in contexts such as sports, education, and workplace performance, limited attention has been paid to how social, cognitive, and motivational factors are associated with flow experiences among practicing artists. This study examined the relationships among perceived social support, the positive mindset dimension, creative process, expected self/life, and flow among practicing artists in China.

IntroductionCognitive impairment in liver transplant recipients can lead to poor health outcomes, and identifying at-risk individuals is important to provide timely support. Poor social conditions, including poor socioeconomic status and lack of social support, have been suggested as potential contributors to cognitive impairment. Further, individuals with poor social conditions may experience psychological symptoms, such as depression and anxiety, which can further affect cognition.AimThis preliminary study explored longitudinal associations between social conditions, depression and anxiety s

BACKGROUND: While individual associations between social determinants of health (SDoH), behavioral factors, and incident dementia have been established, the cumulative effect of multiple unfavorable SDoH and their interaction with behavioral factors remains poorly understood. We aimed to examine the independent and joint associations of SDoH and behavioral factors with incident dementia risk in middle-aged and older adults. METHODS: This prospective cohort study utilized data from the Health and Retirement Study. Participants who were dementia-free at baseline, with complete information on SDo

Objective Schizophrenia is a chronic psychiatric disorder comprising cognitive, behavioral, and often emotional dysfunction. It is often accompanied by limited social support, which plays a crucial role in not only enhancing treatment adherence and resilience but also overall patient satisfaction. Given the growing recognition of perceived social support as a key factor in improving patient satisfaction, this study aims to find the correlation between perceived social support and patient satisfaction among patients diagnosed with schizophrenia who are admitted to the inpatient (wards) as well

Despite having the same underlying genetic etiology, individuals with the same syndromic form of intellectual developmental disability (IDD) show a large degree of interindividual differences in cognition and IQ. Research indicates that up to 80% of the variation in IQ scores among individuals with syndromic IDDs is attributable to nongenetic effects, including social-environmental factors. In this narrative review, we summarize evidence of the influence that factors related to economic stability (focused on due to its prevalence in existing literature) have on IQ in individuals with syndromic

Adherence has a direct impact on reducing the effectiveness of atrial fibrillation therapy and increasing the risk of thromboembolic events. Among the factors involved in the decrease of adherence, the social and psychological characteristics of patients remain insufficiently studied. At the same time, the available publications allow us to conclude that there are markers of the risk of reduced adherence in patients with atrial fibrillation, which include age, cognitive impairment, psychoemotional disorders (including depression and anxiety) and specific behavioral patterns.

OBJECTIVE: MUC5B and TOLLIP single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and cigarette smoking were associated with rheumatoid arthritis-interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD) in a predominantly Northern European population. We evaluated whether RA-ILD is associated with these genetic variants and HLA-DRB1 shared epitope (SE) alleles in a large RA cohort stratified by race and smoking history.
METHODS: HLA-DRB1 SE alleles and MUC5B rs35705950 and TOLLIP rs5743890 SNPs were genotyped in U.S. veterans with RA. ILD was validated through medical record review. Genetic associations with ILD were assessed in

Global urbanization is leading to an inexorable spread of several major diseases that need to be stemmed. Dengue is one of these major diseases spreading in cities today, with its principal mosquito vector superbly adapted to the urban environment. Current mosquito control strategies are proving inadequate, especially in the face of such urbanisation and novel, evidence-based targeted approaches are needed. Through combined epidemiological and entomological approaches, we aimed to identify a novel sanitation strategy to alleviate the burden of dengue through how the dengue virus spreads throug

Parental and social factors have long-term impact on the neurodevelopment of offspring, but tend to highly covary with each other. Thus, it is difficult to parse out which parental and social factor contributes most to neurodevelopmental outcomes. This study aimed to assess clusters of parental and social factors associated with child psychopathology, behavioral problems, and cognition. This study employed the data of 11,875 children (9 to 11 years) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed on 39 environmental measures and 30

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) significantly reduces secondary cardiovascular events and mortality and is a class 1A recommendation by the American Heart Association (AHA) and American College of Cardiology (ACC). However, it remains an underutilized intervention and many eligible patients fail to enroll or complete CR programs. The aim of this review is to identify barriers to CR attendance and discuss strategies to overcome them.
AREAS COVERED: Specific barriers to CR attendance and participation will be reviewed. This will be followed by a discussion of solutions/strategies to h

The rapid decline in young children's active commutes to and from school has prompted investigations into ways to raise activity levels. The period after school is recognized as very important in the daily activity regime of primary school children. In this study, we examine the relative effects of local environmental factors and socio-economic status on children's after-school commute mode choice. Environmental factors are pedestrian priority streets, street intersection density, motorways, shops, and play spaces. Property values are used as a proxy for income. Twenty-four school districts ar
