Adolescents' Identity Formation: Linking the Narrative and the Dual-Cycle Approach.

The narrative and dual-cycle approach conceptualize and operationalize adolescents' identity formation in different ways. While the narrative approach focuses on the construction of an autobiographical life story, the dual-cycle approach focuses on the formation of identity commitments. Although these approaches have different emphases, they are conceptually complementary. Yet, their empirical links and distinctions have only scarcely been investigated. Empirical knowledge on these links in adolescence and across time has been especially lacking. In the present research, it was therefore exami

Relational diversity and neighbourhood cohesion. Unpacking variety, balance and in-group size.

Ethnic diversity is typically measured by the well-known Hirschman-Herfindahl Index. This paper discusses the merits of an alternative approach, which is in our view better suited to tease out why and how ethnic diversity matters. The approach consists of two elements. First, all existing diversity indices are non-relational. From the viewpoint of theoretical accounts that attribute negative diversity effects to in-group favoritism and out-group threat, it should however matter whether, given a certain level of overall diversity, an individual belongs to a minority group or to the dominant maj

The costs of peer ethnic discrimination: Longitudinal associations with negative ethnic identity affect and identity coherence among ethnic minority adolescents.

The present study examined longitudinal associations between perceived peer ethnic discrimination, negative ethnic identity affect, and global identity coherence among ethnic minority adolescents in Italy (n = 280; Mage = 14.29; 59.28% female; 76.42% second-generation). Results indicated negative bidirectional associations between negative ethnic identity affect and global identity coherence. While the associations between peer discrimination and negative ethnic identity affect were bidirectional and positive, the links between peer discrimination and identity coherence were unidirectional and

Alcoholics anonymous and recovery in Türkiye: A qualitative study in the context of Social Identity Theory.

Alcoholics anonymous (AA) groups play a central role in facilitating the transition from an 'addicted' identity to a 'recovering' identity; however, empirical research on how this identity transformation is socially constructed, maintained and questioned within group contexts is limited. Drawing on Social Identity Theory (SIT), this qualitative study examines how AA group dynamics shape members' sense of belonging, processes of identity reconstruction and experiences of recovery while also illuminating the vulnerabilities that may destabilize recovery identity. The study involved in-depth inte

Can transformative experiences bridge the gap between receiving communities and formerly incarcerated persons?

The stigma of incarceration contributes to the global reoffending crisis and remains a barrier to reintegration into receiving communities. Recent research suggests that the key to solving this problem may lie in shared transformative experiences. We tested whether the salience of such experiences can overcome stigma among members of receiving communities when they act as gatekeepers for formerly incarcerated persons seeking employment. Across four experimental studies with seven samples of US and UK nationals (N = 2091), we examined the conditions under which transformative experiences can le

Identity categories and the dilemma of calling police about family violence.

The under-reporting of family violence is a global problem. Multiple barriers to help-seeking have been identified, including some associated with social identities like race, age and gender. This discursive psychology study examines identity and help-seeking in social interaction. We analysed 200 calls classified by police call-takers as family harm using conversation analysis and membership categorization analysis. We found that callers oriented to a locally generated identity category 'the one who called police' as problematic. Callers sought anonymity or proposed cover stories to avoid bei

Identity, morals, and taboos: beliefs as assets.

We develop a theory of moral behavior, individual and collective, based on a general model of identity in which people care about “who they are” and infer their own values from past choices. The model sheds light on many empirical puzzles inconsistent with earlier approaches. Identity investments respond nonmonotonically to acts or threats, and taboos on mere thoughts arise to protect beliefs about the “priceless” value of certain social assets. High endowments trigger escalating commitment and a treadmill effect, while competing identities can cause dysfunctional capital destruction. Social i

By any means necessary: the effects of regulatory focus and moral conviction on hostile and benevolent forms of collective action.

In two studies, we investigate the effect of individuals' promotion and prevention focus on engagement in collective action. We show that responding to group-based disadvantage out of a sense of moral conviction motivates prevention-oriented- but not promotion-oriented- individuals to engage in collective action. Furthermore, holding such strong moral convictions about the fair treatment of their group causes the prevention-oriented to disregard societal rules against hostile forms of collective action (i.e., forms of action that are aimed at harming the interests of those held responsible for

Conceptualizing community: the experience of mental health consumers.

In this article we describe a focus group study of the perspectives of diverse groups of mental health consumers on the concept of community. We identify the core domains that constitute the notion of community, and commonalities and differences in the perception of community along the lines of ethnicity and sexual orientation/gender identity. Seven focus groups were conducted with a total of 62 participants. Transcripts were analyzed using the grounded theory approach. Two domains-togetherness and community acceptance-emerged as common to four types of communities that were most frequently men

Identifiability and self-presentation: computer-mediated communication and intergroup interaction.

This research investigated the intergroup properties of hostile 'flaming' behaviour in computer-mediated communication and how flaming language is affected by Internet identifiability, or identifiability by name and e-mail address/geographical location as is common to Internet communication. According to the Social Identity Model of Deindividuation Effects (SIDE; e.g. Reicher, Spears, & Postmes, 1995) there may be strategic reasons for identifiable groups members to act in a more group-normative manner in the presence of an audience, to gain acceptance from the in-group, to avoid punishment fr

Leather nights in the woods: homosexual encounters in a Dutch highway rest area.

This article describes a small-scale research on homosexual encounters in a Dutch highway rest area called "the Mollebos." Research was carried out on Monday evenings and nights, the so-called "leather nights," which attracted a specific group of patrons: men into leathersexuality and sadomasochism (S&M). Participant observation, informal conversations, and in-depth interviews made it possible to analyze spatial strategy as used by cruising men and the individual meanings patrons attach to outdoor leather cruising. It was found that in the Netherlands cruisers are no longer members of "a silen

When rank meets identity: the neural basis of social rank and group identity integration.

Group identity and social rank are fundamental, interacting dimensions of interpersonal relationships, yet their integrative neural representations remain poorly understood. This study bridges this gap using an experimental design that simultaneously manipulates both dimensions, combined with advanced neuroimaging techniques. During functional MRI scanning, participants viewed targets varying in group identity and social rank. The results revealed that social rank is differentially represented within in-group and out-group contexts. Activity in regions associated with top-down attentional cont

Adapting Groups 4 Health for adults with acquired brain injury: A case series feasibility study.

This study aimed to adapt and evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, mechanisms of change, and preliminary outcomes of Groups 4 Health, a social identity-informed group intervention, for individuals with acquired brain injury in an outpatient rehabilitation setting. The adaptation process involved three phases: modification for cognitive and language impairments, expert consultation, and in vivo consumer feedback. Five participants completed the five-session intervention with no dropouts and high adherence, demonstrating strong feasibility. Quantitative data were analysed descriptively, and

Motivated by identity: A social identity analysis of why people become foster carers.

Understanding why individuals are motivated to take on new identities, particularly why people choose to become foster carers, is critical to addressing persistent shortages in foster care systems. Despite policy consensus that foster care is the preferred alternative when children cannot remain with birth families, shortages persist across many countries. Research has traditionally emphasised individualistic motivations, such as altruism, neglecting broader social and identity-based factors. This study applies a Social Identity Approach, drawing on the Social Identity Model of Identity Change

On the construction of the intersectional identity of LGBTQ people who stutter.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the processes involved in the construction of the intersectional identity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people who stutter (LGBTQ+PWS). The study fills a gap in the literature between research on the social identity of people who stutter (Daniels & Gabel, 2004) and a description of the lived experiences of LGBTQ people who stutter (Daniels, Boyle, & Archer, 2023). METHODS: A hybrid qualitative approach combining Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and Grounded Theory methodologies (GT) was used incor

Attitudes of Turkish Academics Regarding Violence Against Women in the Name of Honor.

Honor is an important concept that has a vital value in Turkey and affects many women's lives and even causes death. It is of utmost importance to know and scientifically demonstrate the value judgments of the academics that lead and pioneer the society in our country where honor culture is adopted. Therefore, in Turkey, where thousands of women are exposed to violence every year, 877 academics participated in this descriptive study to determine the attitudes of academics toward violence against women in the name of honor. The data were collected using "The Scale for Attitudes Towards Violence

Socialization, personality development, and the child's environments: comment on Vandell (2000).

Although many socialization agents influence children's behavior (D. L. Vandell, 2000), the evidence (e.g., from intervention studies) indicates that each exerts its influence only within its own domain. Context effects and genetic effects are among the confounding factors that make it impossible, given current data, to reject the null hypothesis of zero long-term effects of parenting on child outcomes. Problems with the prevailing view of development cannot be solved by invoking within-home environmental differences or gene- environment interactions. Group socialization theory can account for
