First observation of a chimpanzee with albinism in the wild: Social interactions and subsequent infanticide.

Albinism-the congenital absence of pigmentation-is a very rare phenomenon in animals due to the significant costs to fitness of this condition. Both humans and non-human individuals with albinism face a number of challenges, such as reduced vision, increased exposure to ultraviolet radiation, or compromised crypticity resulting in an elevated vulnerability to predation. However, while observations of social interactions involving individuals with albinism have been observed in wild non-primate animals, such interactions have not been described in detail in non-human primates (hereafter, primat

Neurocognitive mechanisms of gaze-expression interactions in face processing and social attention.

The face conveys a rich source of non-verbal information used during social communication. While research has revealed how specific facial channels such as emotional expression are processed, little is known about the prioritization and integration of multiple cues in the face during dyadic exchanges. Classic models of face perception have emphasized the segregation of dynamic vs. static facial features along independent information processing pathways. Here we review recent behavioral and neuroscientific evidence suggesting that within the dynamic stream, concurrent changes in eye gaze and em

Deficits in eye gaze during negative social interactions in patients with schizophrenia.

Impaired social functioning has been reported in patients with schizophrenia. This study aimed to examine characteristics of interpersonal behaviors in patients with schizophrenia during various social interactions using the virtual reality system. Twenty-six patients and 26 controls engaged in the virtual conversation tasks, including 3 positive and 3 negative emotion-laden conversations. Eye gaze and other behavioral parameters were recorded during the listening and answering phases. The amount of eye gaze was assessed as smaller in the patients than in the controls. A significant interactio

Puberty and gender interact to predict social anxiety symptoms in early adolescence.

This study examines direct and interactive effects of puberty and gender on social anxiety symptoms in early adolescence. One hundred-six participants were assessed at ages 9.5 and 11 years. Results suggest that gender and puberty interact to predict social anxiety symptoms. Advanced puberty was associated with increased symptoms for girls only.

Perceived ethnic discrimination in relation to daily moods and negative social interactions.

Ethnic discrimination experienced in an interpersonal context has been identified as a stressor contributing to racial disparities in health. Exposure to racism may influence the way people view their ongoing experiences, making it more likely that individuals will appraise new situations as threatening and harmful, adding to their overall stress burden. A multiethnic sample of 113 adults completed a diary page every 30 min for one day. The diary inquired about moods and perceptions of social interactions. When controlling for personality characteristics, mixed models regression analyses indic

Impact of social interactions in the community on the transmission of tuberculosis in a high incidence area.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is transmitted by close contact with an infectious person. It is assumed that close contact occurs amongst household members and that contact outside the house is "causal" and does not play a major role in the transmission of TB. METHODS: This study was conducted in an impoverished area with a high incidence of TB and a low HIV seropositive prevalence. Thirty three households with 84 TB patients were identified between February 1993 and April 1996 and the transmission of TB was studied by combining Mycobacterium tuberculosis fingerprinting with in depth sociologi

Sexual interactions and their effect on positive and negative emotions in social anxiety disorder.

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is associated with significant interpersonal difficulties, yet little is known about how individuals with SAD experience sexual interactions. The current study examined the emotional consequences of sexual interactions among individuals with and without SAD, using a 21-day daily diary design. Participants were 108 single young adults (54 with SAD; 54 without), all of whom were not in a romantic relationship. Participants reported daily on their sexual interactions and emotional experiences. We found no significant differences in the number of sexual interactions b

Social modulation of activity and orientation fosters complex interactions in young zebrafish.

Zebrafish are an important model organism for investigating collective behavior and neuropsychiatric disorders due to attributes such as fast development, high genetic homology with humans and a rich behavioral repertoire. Social behavior in zebrafish emerges as early as twelve days post-fertilization, building toward diverse, coordinated, and complex adult interactions. Most studies on social phenotypes, including in zebrafish, have focused on adult animals and assess isolated traits such as aggression, boldness, or social memory, leaving the critical period of early development when socialit

Attitude (In)congruence in Group Interactions Predicts Social Identification and Favouritism Behaviour.

Addressing widespread polarisation requires understanding how attitudes relate to identification and ingroup favouritism. Two studies employ interactive paradigms to examine whether attitude congruence produces behavioural consequences in addition to identification. In Study 1, participants (N = 375) responded to four novel attitude statements in groups of five and were randomised to either see the responses of the other participants, or to be blind. Ingroup favouritism was measured by token allocation. In Study 2, N = 413 participants in groups of six observed responses to one of three statem

Interpersonal neural synchrony across levels of interpersonal closeness and social interactivity.

Interpersonal neural synchrony is a fundamental aspect of social interactions, offering insights into the neural mechanisms underlying human connection and developmental outcomes. So far, hyperscanning studies have examined synchrony across different dyads and tasks, leading to inconsistencies in experimental findings and limiting cross-study comparability. This variability has posed challenges for building a unified theoretical framework for neural synchrony. This study investigated the effects of interpersonal closeness and social interactivity on neural synchrony using functional near-infra

Semantic knowledge of social interactions is mediated by the hedonic evaluation system in the brain.

Attaching semantic meaning to sensory information received from both inside and outside our bodies is a fundamental function of the human brain. The theory of Controlled Semantic Cognition (CSC) proposes that the formation of semantic knowledge relies on connections between spatially distributed modality-specific spoke-nodes, and a modality-general hub in the anterior temporal lobes (ATLs). This theory can also be applied to social semantic knowledge, though certain domain-specific spoke-nodes may make a disproportionate contribution to the understanding of social concepts. The ATLs have stron

Personality Trait Interactions in Risk for and Protection against Social Anxiety Symptoms.

Previous attempts to identify personality traits that enhance inclination to social anxiety (SA) have been limited by a tendency to focus on selected traits in isolation, rather than examining their interactions. Additional research is needed to better understand whether and how these dimensions are linked to SA. In a prospective study, it was examined how interactions between the Big Five personality factors predict SA symptoms. A total of 135 individuals, aged 18-50 years, were recruited. Personality traits were measured at baseline, and SA symptoms were assessed one month later. Results sho

Additive and Interactive Effects of Victimization on Adolescent Aggression Across Social Settings.

Considering that children and adolescents can face multiple exposures to violence due to their involvement in different socialization domains, this study aimed to analyze additive and interactive effects of physical and verbal victimization by parents, peers, and schoolteachers on adolescent aggression across social settings. With regard to parent-child and teacher-adolescent relationships, physical and verbal forms of aggression were differentiated, whereas aggression by and toward peers was assessed by a composite measure of overt and indirect aggression. Data were drawn from three large sec

Beyond diagnosis: the relevance of social interactions for participation in inclusive preschool settings.

Purpose: This study aims to explore the role of three specific factors within the child-environment interaction process - engagement, independence and social interactions - in influencing development and learning of children with disabilities in inclusive preschool settings. The main question is whether children can be categorised in homogenous groups based on engagement, independence and social interactions (proximal variables within a biopsychosocial framework of human development). The study also examined whether children with the same diagnosis would group together or separately, when tryi

An observational study of the interactions of socially withdrawn/anxious early adolescents and their friends.

BACKGROUND: The friendships of socially withdrawn/anxious children and early adolescents have been found to lack critical rewarding qualities. Observational research may help elucidate the obstacles they face in forming and maintaining high-quality friendships with sociable peers. METHOD: We observed the interactions of 38 socially withdrawn early adolescents with their friends and compared them to a community control group. RESULTS: In negotiating the sharing of an object, the socially withdrawn, anxious group was more passive than controls. The socially withdrawn, anxious participants enga

The effect of Tourette syndrome on the education and social interactions of a school-age child.

Tourette syndrome is a neurological condition characterized by involuntary vocal or motor tics. Symptoms begin occurring before the age of 18 and are more common in boys than girls. Tics can change in severity and character from hour to hour or in stressful situations. Uncontrolled tics can cause self-esteem concerns, family stress, and academic difficulty. Medication and school services were employed to help the student achieve the goal of feeling more comfortable with peers and in the classroom.

A two-year-old boy with language regression and unusual social interactions.

Jimmy, a 2 1/2-year-old boy, was seen for the first time by a new pediatrician after a recent family move. His mother made the appointment for a health supervision visit although she had concerns about his language and social skills. She stated that he spoke primarily with unintelligible sounds and often communicated by pointing with his finger. He spoke only 10 words that were clear enough to be understood. Jimmy's mother said that he could hear, but she was not sure whether he understood everything she said. Although he played at home with his 4-year-old brother, he typically played by himse

Can social and agonistic interactions be used to detect anxiolytic activity of drugs?

Majority of adult male albino random-bred mice housed singly or in small groups show agonistic behavior on interaction with a strange male mouse: some of them are predominantly aggressive ('aggressive' mice) while others show defenses or escapes even though their partners are not aggressive ('timid' mice). The remaining males not exhibiting agonistic behavior ('sociable' mice) show more social investigation then aggressive or timid mice and more locomotion then timid mice. Active defensive-escape behavior ('timidity') and inhibition of social investigation and of locomotion is much stronger in
