Psychological, social, and sexual challenges affecting men receiving male infertility treatment: a systematic review and implications for clinical care.

In recent years, social research surrounding the consequences of infertility has increasingly focused on the male perspective; however, a gap exists in the understanding of men's experiences of male infertility treatment. This review aims to synthesize the existing evidence concerning the psychological, social, and sexual burden of male infertility treatment on men, as well as patient needs during clinical care. A systematic search identified 12 studies that are diverse in design, setting, and methods. Psychological evaluations have found that urological surgery may have a lasting impact on in

The impact of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) on health and wellbeing in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA): A case study of Kenya.

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) remain endemic to many regions of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) left behind by socioeconomic progress. As such, these diseases are markers of extreme poverty and inequity that are propagated by the political, economic, social, and cultural systems that affect health and wellbeing. As countries embrace and work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the needs of such vulnerable populations need to be addressed in local and global arenas. The research uses primary qualitative data collected from five NTD endemic counties of Kenya: interviews key

Inequalities in determinants of health among Aboriginal and Caucasian persons living with HIV/AIDS in Ontario: results from the Positive Spaces, Healthy Places Study.

OBJECTIVES: Aboriginal Canadians (i.e., First Nations, Inuit and Métis) are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS, and experience greater social and economic marginalization and poorer housing conditions. This study sought to understand the differences in the determinants of health and housing-related characteristics between samples of Aboriginal and Caucasian adults living with HIV/AIDS in Ontario. METHODS: We analyzed baseline demographic, socio-economic, health, and housing-related data from 521 individuals (79 Aboriginal and 442 Caucasian) living with HIV/AIDS and enrolled in the Positi

The rise and spread of invasive emm49 Streptococcus pyogenes in the USA.

Background. The propensity of Streptococcus pyogenes (group A Streptococcus) to invade normally sterile sites and cause invasive group A Streptococcus (iGAS) disease varies across strains, which are classified using the emm gene. Between 2015 and 2017, multistate iGAS surveillance identified an ~150-fold increase of one particular emm type, emm49. This genomic epidemiological analysis aimed to identify bacterial, patient and societal factors associated with this expansion.Methods. We analysed 1322 emm49 iGAS cases and the genome sequences of the clinical isolates acquired through the populatio

"The success is just seeing them connected" - a mixed methods analysis of group-based perinatal education in eight state prisons.

BACKGROUND: Of the 91,100 women incarcerated in the United States, the vast majority are within childbearing age and between 0.5% and 4% are pregnant at intake. Pregnant and postpartum individuals face significant gaps in access to healthcare and support systems inside. Group perinatal education offers one way to supplement existing clinical care and improve physical and mental health outcomes; however, existing research exploring the structure, curricula, and potential benefits of such programming is limited. METHODS: Three sources of data were collected between 2021 and 2025. Group logs were

Nonprescription Hormone Use Among Transgender Women - National HIV Behavioral Surveillance Among Transgender Women, Seven Urban Areas, United States, 2019-2020.

Certain transgender women who seek gender-affirming hormone treatment (GAHT) face economic and social barriers that limit or prevent access to medically supervised GAHT. Transgender women facing such barriers might acquire GAHT without prescription, potentially without proper dosage, administration, and health monitoring in the absence of medical supervision. For this report, survey data were analyzed from 1,165 transgender women in seven urban areas in the United States to examine associations between self-reported use of nonprescription GAHT and known correlates of nonprescription GAHT, incl

Does incarceration influence patients' goals for opioid use disorder treatment? A qualitative study of buprenorphine treatment in jail.

BACKGROUND: Correctional facilities increasingly offer medications for opioid use disorder (OUD), including buprenorphine. Nevertheless, retention in treatment post-incarceration is suboptimal and overdose mortality remains high. Our objectives were to understand how incarcerated patients viewed buprenorphine treatment and identify modifiable factors that influenced treatment continuation post-release. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 22 men receiving buprenorphine treatment in an urban jail. Interviews were audio recorded, professionally transcribed, and analyzed using a

Firearm Access and Socio-Structural Factors Related to Suicidality Among Youth With Diverse Sexual, Gender, and Racial Identities.

OBJECTIVE: Elevated rates of suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SA) among youth, particularly multiply marginalized youth, are occurring in the context of youths' access to household firearms. Research examining how perceived access to firearms is related to SI and SA among youth with marginalized identities is limited and often neglects to consider intersectionality. This study explored how intersecting social identities and positions, access to firearms, and socio-structural factors were associated with SI and SA for youth. METHOD: The analytic sample (N = 17,794) included 7-12th

[Length of stay, diagnostic classification, treatment outcome and discharge status of patients living alone or not of German federal hospitals].

To assume that the length of stay in hospital depends on whether a patient lives alone or not belongs to conventional wisdom in social epidemiology. In the DTI (diagnosis- and therapy) index of Infratest Health Research a randomly selected number of patients of German acute hospitals was asked whether they were living alone or not. Measuring the average length of stay in hospital and the average success of treatment with these data, only a marginal effect of the variable "social situation" remains after correcting for age. The social situation is a very influential variable, however, when cons

An evolutionary concept analysis: stigma among women living with hepatitis C.

BACKGROUND: Stigma is a complex social phenomenon that leads to marginalization and influences the course of illness. In the context of hepatitis C virus (HCV), stigma is a well-documented barrier to accessing care, treatment, and cure. In recent years, HCV rates among women have increased, resulting in an urgent need to address stigma and its harmful effects. The purpose of this concept analysis was to investigate stigma in the context of women living with HCV using Rodgers' evolutionary method. METHODS: PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, Medline, PsycINFO, and Nursing and Allied Health were used to id

Assessment of the individual and compounding effects of marginalization factors on injury severity, discharge location, recovery, and employment outcomes at 1 year after traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to examine the effect of eight distinct marginalized group memberships and explore their compounding effect on injury severity, recovery, discharge location, and employment outcomes 1-year after traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: Individuals with medically confirmed, complicated mild-severe TBI (N = 300) requiring inpatient rehabilitation care between the ages of 18 and 65 were recruited at two urban (public and private) health systems between 2013 and 2019. Data were collected from self-report and medical record abstraction. Marginalized group membersh

Disability and marginal utility of income: evidence from hypothetical choices.

It is often assumed that disability reduces the marginal utility of income. In this article, individuals' marginal utility of income in two states-(i) paralyzed in both legs from birth and (ii) not mobility impaired at all-is measured through hypothetical choices between imagined lotteries behind a so-called veil of ignorance. The outcomes of the lotteries include both income and disability status. It is found that most people have higher marginal utility when paralyzed than when not mobility impaired at all. The two marginal utilities are evaluated at the same levels of income. Having persona

Collectivism and Suicide Risk: Reinterpreting Interpersonal Theory Constructs in Southern Belize.

BACKGROUND: Over 70% of global suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet cultural mechanisms of suicide risk remain underexplored. Collectivism is often assumed protective, but emerging evidence from vertically collectivist settings suggests a more complex relationship. METHODS: Qualitative interviews were conducted with 29 community stakeholders across health, education, religious, and social service sectors in Toledo District, southern Belize. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis with deductive alignment to the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (IPTS) and

Disability, sexuality, and 'cure' in Indra Sinha's Animal's people.

Indra Sinha's Animal's People (2007) narrates the story of nineteen-year-old Animal, a severely disabled survivor of a gas leak in Khaufpur, a fictionalized version of post-1984 Bhopal. The novel explores disability as a medical, physical, and social construct, with Animal's disfigurement shaping both his identity and Sinha's critique of power, marginalization, and industrial negligence in a poverty-stricken 'third-world' society. Rejecting victimhood and resisting neoliberal, Eurocentric models of disability tied to individuality and consumerism, Animal asserts a radical self-definition that

Racially Conscious Sociocultural Attuned Emotionally Focused Therapy With Inter-Ethnoracial Couples.

Inter-ethnoracial relationships have increased in the United States since anti-miscegenation laws were repealed over 58 years ago. While public approval has grown, it remains a marginalized relationship structure. Inter-ethnoracial partners tend to experience stigma, stress, or trauma from discrimination, lower relationship quality, and negative mental health. Inter-ethnoracial research literature also reflect that these relationships are at risk for separation or dissolution. Applying critical race theory (CRT) and intersectionality can help relational therapists understand the marginalizatio

Care of Gender Diverse Youth with Obesity.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The relationships between gender identity, body image, and gender expression are complex, requiring a gender affirming approach to address weight management. This purpose of this review is to describe the essentials to caring for gender diverse youth, as well as the differences and intersections among those with obesity. RECENT FINDINGS: Gender-affirming hormone therapy may lead to abnormal weight gain and increased body mass index, or worsen obesity and exacerbate weight-related complications. Moreover, given the high prevalence of victimization, marginalization, and stigm

Beyond depressive symptoms: conceptualizing social suffering among displaced Syrians in Lebanon.

BACKGROUND: Mental burden is largely conceptualized through mental illness, yet it can manifest beyond diagnostic categories. We contend that social suffering requires separate consideration, as it frames mental burden through intersubjective, collective, and power dynamics, while centering its inextricable link to social and political injustice. Lebanon offers a relevant setting, hosting Syrian refugees amid economic crisis and intermittent armed conflict. OBJECTIVE: We assess social suffering with the novel feeling broken or destroyed scale (FBD) and compare it with a standard mental health

Key drug use, health and socio-economic characteristics of young crack users in two Brazilian cities.

BACKGROUND: Crack use constitutes a major problem in cities across Brazil. While existing data suggest that crack use is generally concentrated among disenfranchised young people with extensive health problems and crime involvement, extensive data gaps exist. To address this issue, this study aimed to assess key characteristics of young crack users in two Brazilian cities. METHODS: N=160 regular and young adult (ages 18-24) crack users were recruited by community-based methods in the cities of Rio de Janeiro (Southeast) and Salvador (Northeast). Don't let the suffering make you fade away: an ethnographic study of resilience among survivors of genocide-rape in southern Rwanda.

Rape has been used in contemporary armed conflicts to inflict physical, psychological, cultural and social damage. In endeavoring to address the psychological damage of collective violence, some researchers and global health practitioners are turning toward post-conflict mental health promotion approaches that centrally feature resilience. Though previous findings from resilience and coping research are robust, few studies have actually investigated resilience among genocide-rape survivors in cultural context in non-Western settings. This paper presents ethnographic data gathered over 14 month
