Social Networks and Longitudinal Neuropsychiatric Symptom Trajectories across the Cognitive Continuum.

INTRODUCTION: Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPSs) significantly contribute to caregiver burden and the risk of institutionalization in patients with cognitive dysfunction. Although social isolation is linked to cognitive decline, its associations with longitudinal NPS trajectories are poorly understood. This study explores the association between social network characteristics and longitudinal NPS trajectories across the cognitive continuum. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study of 618 adults (aged ≥ 50) evaluated at a memory clinic between 2017 and 2024. Social networks were

Social network position and the Conserved Transcriptional Response to Adversity in older Koreans.

BACKGROUND: Social connections are crucial to human health and well-being. Previous research on molecular mechanisms in health has focused primarily on the individual-level perception of social connections (e.g., loneliness). This study adopted socio-centric social network analysis that includes all social ties from the entire population of interest to examine the group-level social connections and their association with a molecular genomic measure of health. METHODS: Using socio-centric (global) social network data from an entire village in Korea, we investigated how social network character

Understanding the dual role of individual position in multidimensional social support networks and depression levels: Insights from a nomination-driven framework.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between the structural characteristics (e.g., single dimension friendship networks) and functional characteristics (multi-dimension) of social support networks and depressive symptoms among college students. Data were collected from 1784 students across six Chinese universities using questionnaire surveys and a nomination-based social network analysis approach. Friendship and social support networks (including four dimensions of support: appraisal, belonging, tangible, and self-esteem), were constructed to exploring relationships between network

Applying network analysis to explore family and peer influence on diet and health in households of Singaporean young adults: findings from an online network survey.

OBJECTIVE: The complexity and nuance of how social networks shape dietary behaviours and health dynamics remain underexplored, particularly in collectivist societies where family and peer relationships strongly impact health. This study applies social network analysis to examine these dynamics in Singapore. DESIGN: An online household survey of young adults (age 21-35) and family (21+) assessed the consumption of healthy food groups (fruit, vegetable intake), unhealthy food groups (fast food, snack consumption) and social network characteristics (interaction frequency, emotional closeness, sh

Amygdala Nuclei Volumes Are Selectively Associated With Social Network Size in Homeless and Precariously Housed Persons.

Objective: The amygdala is a brain region comprised of a group of functionally distinct nuclei that play a central role in social behavior. In homeless and precariously housed individuals, high rates of multimorbidity, and structural aspects of the environment may dysregulate social functioning. This study examined the neurobiological substrates of social connection in homeless and precariously housed persons by examining associations between amygdala nuclei volumes and social network size. Methods: Sixty participants (mean age 43.6 years; 73.3% male) were enrolled from an ongoing study of hom

The effects of social networks on HIV risk behaviors among Vietnamese female sex workers: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Female sex workers (FSWs) experience heightened vulnerability to HIV and other health harms, and cross-border FSWs face additional challenges due to language issues, higher mobility, and weaker negotiation skills. Given the critical role of social network factors in HIV transmission, it is imperative to explore the social network characteristics of Vietnamese cross-border FSWs in China to enhance AIDS prevention and control. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 22 Vietnamese FSWs in Hekou County, Yunnan Province from May to July 2018. The samples were selected u

Unraveling Symptom Heterogeneity and Core Features of Adolescent Social Anxiety: Insights From Latent Profile and Network Analyses.

To further investigate the heterogeneity of adolescents' social anxiety, a cross-sectional survey was conducted among 6540 Chinese adolescents aged 11 to 19 years (3294 boys). Latent profile analysis and network analysis were adopted to identify subgroups based on social anxiety symptoms and further reveal core features of each group. Results showed that four subgroups were identified: "Profile 1 (n = 1,768, 26.8%): the low group with diffuse social anxiety"; "Profile 2 (n = 1,202, 18.7%): the moderate group with cognitive disturbance"; "Profile 3 (n = 1995, 30.6%): the moderate group with dif

Social networks and adult social identities: profiles and correlates of support and rejection.

The growth of interest in social networks has underscored the need for integrative analyses of network dimensions. A three-pronged strategy to achieve this objective was pursued in a study of 261 married women nurses. First, network variables related to important adult social identities were differentiated. Factor analyses revealed four network interaction factors: work support, work rejection, general support, and general rejection. An additional factor analysis differentiated work associates from nonwork network members. Second, cluster analysis of these factor scores identified five differe

Social support network factors associated with verbal fluency among vulnerable persons living with HIV.

Vulnerable persons living with HIV (PLWH) are at high risk of cognitive impairment and challenges accessing quality social support in later life. Impaired verbal fluency (VF), a cognitive domain linked to HIV, could impede social support associated with health and well-being for already vulnerable PLWH. We examined the structure of social support, using latent class analysis, and the associations among quantity, specific forms and quality of social support and VF among PLWH. Participants enrolled in the BEACON study (n = 383) completed the Controlled Oral Word Association test (COWAT) and a so

The influence of relationship closeness on default-mode network connectivity during social interactions.

Reciprocated trust plays a critical role in forming and maintaining relationships, and has consistently been shown to implicate neural circuits involved in reward-related processing and social cognition. Less is known about neural network connectivity during social interactions involving trust, however, particularly as a function of closeness between an investor and a trustee. We examined network reactivity and connectivity in participants who played an economic trust game with close friends, strangers and a computer. Network reactivity analyses showed enhanced activation of the default-mode n
