The mental health of university students in South Africa: Results of the national student survey.

BACKGROUND: We estimate 30-day prevalence of 11 common mental disorders among a representative sample of university students in South Africa and explore disparities in student mental health across historically segregated institutions and marginalised groups. METHODS: Cross-sectional data collected in self-report surveys of students (n = 28,268) from 17 universities were weighted to adjust for differences in survey responses. Poisson regression was used to estimate risk ratios (RRs). RESULTS: Prevalence estimates were highest (21.0-24.5 %) for two anxiety disorders (social anxiety disorder, P

Area Vulnerability and Disparities in Therapy for Patients With Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma.

IMPORTANCE: Area-level measures of sociodemographic disadvantage may be associated with racial and ethnic disparities with respect to receipt of treatment for metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) but have not been investigated previously, to our knowledge. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between area-level measures of social vulnerability and racial and ethnic disparities in the treatment of US Medicare beneficiaries with mRCC from 2015 through 2019. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study included Medicare beneficiaries older than 65 years who were diagnose

Face processing in the temporal lobe.

Face perception is a socially important but complex process with many stages and many facets. There is substantial evidence from many sources that it involves a large extent of the temporal lobe, from the ventral occipitotemporal cortex and superior temporal sulci to anterior temporal regions. While early human neuroimaging work suggested a core face network consisting of the occipital face area, fusiform face area, and posterior superior temporal sulcus, studies in both humans and monkeys show a system of face patches stretching from posterior to anterior in both the superior temporal sulcus

The Links Between Disability, Incarceration, And Social Exclusion.

Disabled people are disproportionately incarcerated and segregated from society through a variety of institutions. Still, the links between disability and incarceration are underexplored, limiting understanding of how carceral institutions punish and contribute to the social exclusion of disabled people. Using data from the 2016 Survey of Prison Inmates, we estimated disability prevalence in state and federal prisons, assessing disparities by race, ethnicity, and sex, and we examined inequities in previous residence in other "punitive" and "therapeutic" institutions. Sixty-six percent of incar

Racial Residential Segregation and Hypertensive Disorder of Pregnancy Among Women in Chicago: Analysis of Electronic Health Record Data.

BACKGROUND: Racial residential segregation is associated with higher rates of chronic hypertension, as well as greater risk of preterm birth and low birthweight. However, few studies have examined associations between segregation and hypertensive disorder of pregnancy (HDP). METHODS: Electronic health records from 4,748 singleton births among non-Hispanic black women at Prentice Women's Hospital in Chicago, IL (2009-2013) were geocoded to the census tract level. Residential segregation was measured using the Gi* statistic, a z-score measuring the extent to which each individual's neighborhood

Genomic epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 in a UK university identifies dynamics of transmission.

Understanding SARS-CoV-2 transmission in higher education settings is important to limit spread between students, and into at-risk populations. In this study, we sequenced 482 SARS-CoV-2 isolates from the University of Cambridge from 5 October to 6 December 2020. We perform a detailed phylogenetic comparison with 972 isolates from the surrounding community, complemented with epidemiological and contact tracing data, to determine transmission dynamics. We observe limited viral introductions into the university; the majority of student cases were linked to a single genetic cluster, likely follow

Neighborhood environment and the wellbeing of older tenants in planned housing.

The relationship between neighborhood characteristics and the well-being of elderly tenants was studied through a national area probability sample of 153 planned housing environments and over 3000 tenants in them. Six indices of tenants' psychological and social well-being were used as dependent variables in hierarchical multiple regressions where neighborhood characteristics were entered after personal factors were controlled. Neighborhood environmental factors accounted for a significant proportion of the residual variance in every index of well-being. In general, quiet neighborhoods in smal

Towards optimization of community vulnerability indices for COVID-19 prevalence.

BACKGROUND: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s social vulnerability index (SVI) for exploring social and health disparities in the United States may not be suitable for assessing COVID-19 risk in specific communities and subpopulations. This study aims to develop the community vulnerability index (CVI) optimized for demographic-specific COVID-19 prevalence at the census tract level and apply it to Clark County, Nevada, which includes the vibrant Las Vegas metropolitan area. METHODS: We constructed the CVI using fifteen social condition variables from the CDC's SVI along wi

Prognostic significance of cancer family history for patients with gastric cancer: a single center experience from China.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, approximately 800 pregnant women die each day. The incidence of this tragic event is influenced by various factors related to the environments in which individuals reside and interact. Consequently, residential locations might reflect systematic differences in exposures and vulnerabilities, impacting maternal mortality rates. In Colombia, maternal mortality has been on the rise. Yet, the patterns of this phenomenon and the extent of disparities among different social groups remain unclear. This study aimed to examine the trends in maternal mortality in Colombia and its

Associations between historical redlining and birth outcomes from 2006 through 2015 in California.

BACKGROUND: Despite being one of the wealthiest nations, disparities in adverse birth outcomes persist across racial and ethnic lines in the United States. We studied the association between historical redlining and preterm birth, low birth weight (LBW), small-for-gestational age (SGA), and perinatal mortality over a ten-year period (2006-2015) in Los Angeles, Oakland, and San Francisco, California. METHODS: We used birth outcomes data from the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2015. Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC) Sec

A Perspective on Inhabited Urban Space: Land Use and Occupation, Heat Islands, and Precarious Urbanization as Determinants of Territorial Receptivity to Dengue in the City of Rio De Janeiro.

INTRODUCTION: Rio de Janeiro is the second-largest city in Brazil, with strong socio-spatial segregation, and diverse and heterogeneous land use, occupation, and landscapes. The complexity of dengue requires the construction of surveillance and control tools that take into account the historical, social, economic, and environmental processes mediated in the territory as a central axis of public policy. In this context, this study aimed to stratify the city into areas of receptivity to dengue, using innovative "territorial indicators" because they are built based on the actual occupation of the

Disruptive Innovations to Achieve Health Equity Through Healthcare and Research Transformation.

In order to achieve health equity, we must implement innovative health system, public health, and policy-level interventions to address the historical root causes of structural and institutional racism embedded in our medical and social systems. A history of unconsented medical and research experimentation on vulnerable groups and residual healthcare provider biases toward minoritized patients has led to patient distrust of medical systems and poor quality of care. Historical discriminatory housing and lending policies resulted in racial residential segregation and neighborhoods with inadequat

The Effects of Occupational Status and Sex-Typed Jobs on the Evaluation of Men and Women.

Background: Occupational segregation by gender is one of the major problems faced by professional women in the labor market. Since the sixties, psychological explanations point out that gender stereotypes are responsible for this persistent inequality in the workforce. Nevertheless, most of research has overlooked that emotions are particularly important as the discrimination faced by professional women is better explained by the ambivalent feelings they provoke than by stereotyping. Aim: The aim of this research is to analyse from the Stereotype Content Model (SCM, Fiske et al., 2002) and the

Social determinants of health in relation to firearm-related homicides in the United States: A nationwide multilevel cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Gun violence has shortened the average life expectancy of Americans, and better knowledge about the root causes of gun violence is crucial to its prevention. While some empirical evidence exists regarding the impacts of social and economic factors on violence and firearm homicide rates, to the author's knowledge, there has yet to be a comprehensive and comparative lagged, multilevel investigation of major social determinants of health in relation to firearm homicides and mass shootings. METHODS AND FINDINGS: This study used negative binomial regression models and geolocated gun ho

Understanding communication networks in the emergency department.

BACKGROUND: Emergency departments (EDs) are high pressure health care settings involving complex interactions between staff members in providing and organising patient care. Without good communication and cooperation amongst members of the ED team, quality of care is at risk. This study examined the problem-solving, medication advice-seeking and socialising networks of staff working in an Australian hospital ED. METHODS: A social network survey (Response Rate = 94%) was administered to all ED staff (n = 109) including doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, administrative staff and ward

Neighborhoods, Networks, and HIV Care Among Men Who Have Sex With Men: Proposal for a Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: The majority of people living with HIV in the United States are men who have sex with men (MSM), with race- and ethnicity-based disparities in HIV rates and care continuum. In order to uncover the neighborhood- and network-involved pathways that produce HIV care outcome disparities, systematic, theory-based investigation of the specific and intersecting neighborhood and social network characteristics that relate to the HIV care continuum must be engaged. OBJECTIVE: Using socioecological and intersectional conceptual frameworks, we aim to identify individual-, neighborhood-, and ne

Historical Redlining and Spatiotemporal Patterns in Breast Cancer Screening.

IMPORTANCE: Geographic variation in breast cancer screening may reflect persistent structural inequities in access to preventive care. Understanding whether historical redlining remains associated with screening, independent of contemporary social vulnerability, neighborhood conditions, and geographic access, is critical for targeting interventions within cancer center catchment areas. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between historical redlining and breast cancer screening prevalence, accounting for social vulnerability, neighborhood characteristics, and geographic access, and to chara

Smoking remains associated with education after controlling for social background and genetic factors in a study of 18 twin cohorts.

We tested the causality between education and smoking using the natural experiment of discordant twin pairs allowing to optimally control for background genetic and childhood social factors. Data from 18 cohorts including 10,527 monozygotic (MZ) and same-sex dizygotic (DZ) twin pairs discordant for education and smoking were analyzed by linear fixed effects regression models. Within twin pairs, education levels were lower among the currently smoking than among the never smoking co-twins and this education difference was larger within DZ than MZ pairs. Similarly, education levels were higher am
