Social-spatial network structures and community ties of egocentric sex and confidant networks: A Chicago case study.

Exploring how sexual and confidant networks overlap spatially and socially could facilitate a better understanding of sexually transmitted infection risk, as well as help identify areas for interventions. This study aims to examine how a sexual and peer-affiliate network is impacted or shaped by interconnected social relationships and spatial patterns. We used data collected from a sample of 618 young black men who have sex with men (YBMSM) and transgender women in Chicago (2013-2014) that includes partner and confidant links, geolocations, and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) awareness. We spa

Structural or dispositional? An experimental investigation of the experience of winning in social casino games (and impulsivity) on subsequent gambling behaviors.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In the present research, we experimentally investigated whether the experience of winning (i.e., inflated payout rates) in a social casino game influenced social casino gamers' subsequent decision to gamble for money. Furthermore, we assessed whether facets of dispositional impulsivity - negative and positive urgency in particular - also influenced participants' subsequent gambling. METHODS: Social casino gamers who were also current gamblers (N = 318) were asked to play a social casino game to assess their perceptions of the game in exchange for $3. Unbeknownst to them,

Food insecurity among formerly homeless youth in supportive housing: A social-ecological analysis of a structural intervention.

A growing body of research indicates that structural interventions to provide permanent supportive housing (PSH) to homeless adults within a Housing First approach can improve their health. However, research is lacking regarding the impact of PSH on youth experiencing homelessness. This article seeks to understand how PSH for youth impacts a basic health need-food security- across multiple levels of the social-ecological environment. In January of 2014, San Francisco, California opened the city's first municipally-funded PSH building exclusively designated for transition-aged youth (ages 18-24

Understanding the Interplay Between Neighborhood Structural Factors, Social Processes, and Alcohol Outlets on Child Physical Abuse.

This article seeks to understand the relative influence of neighborhood structural characteristics (e.g., disadvantage) and social processes (e.g., interactions between residents) on child physical abuse. Using multilevel modeling in a sample of 3,023 parents in 194 zip codes, structural characteristics of factor scores representing residential stability and foreign-born Latino males were negatively related to child physical abuse. High proportions of naturalized and Asian/Pacific Islander families were positively related to the frequency of physical abuse. Higher levels of neighborhood social

Early social isolation provokes electrophysiological and structural changes in cutaneous sensory nerves of adult male rats.

Sensory and social deprivation from the mother and littermates during early life disturbs the development of the central nervous system, but little is known about its effect on the development of the peripheral nervous system. To assess peripheral effects of early isolation, male rat pups were reared artificially in complete social isolation (AR); reared artificially with two same-age conspecifics (AR-Social); or reared by their mothers and with littermates (MR). As adults, the electrophysiological properties of the sensory sural (SU) nerve were recorded. We found that the amplitude and normal

Symptoms of specific and generalized social phobia: an examination of discriminant validity and structural relations with mood and anxiety symptoms.

Current models divide social phobia into specific (SSP) and generalized (GSP) subtypes and suggest strong overlap between GSP and avoidant personality disorder (APD). Meanwhile, other research suggests reclassifying anxiety and mood disorders as fear and distress disorders. To unify these separate lines of research, this study was designed to test the hypothesis that SSP is more related to fear disorders (e.g., panic and phobias), whereas GSP and APD are more related to distress disorders (e.g., depression and generalized anxiety). Confirmatory factor analysis suggested the best-fitting model

[Close relationships in childhood and adulthood from the viewpoint of structural analysis of social behavior (SASB) and attachment theory].

Two theoretical approaches to interpersonal experiences and behavior are empirically related to each other: Structural Analysis of Social Behavior (SASB) and attachment theory. The focus is on the most important relationships during life-span: relationships with mother and father in childhood, which were measured retrospectively, and romantic relationships in adulthood. 93 outpatients of a psychosomatic clinic took part in the study. Self-report measures were used to assess SASB-dimensions affiliation and autonomy and attachment variables (Intrex short form, Short measure of attachment to pare

Transferability Based on Drug Structure Similarity in the Automatic Classification of Noncompliant Drug Use on Social Media: Natural Language Processing Approach.

BACKGROUND: Medication noncompliance is a critical issue because of the increased number of drugs sold on the web. Web-based drug distribution is difficult to control, causing problems such as drug noncompliance and abuse. The existing medication compliance surveys lack completeness because it is impossible to cover patients who do not go to the hospital or provide accurate information to their doctors, so a social media-based approach is being explored to collect information about drug use. Social media data, which includes information on drug usage by users, can be used to detect drug abuse

A Qualitative Evaluation of Structural and Social Determinants of Health, Black Race, and Perspectives of Prostate Cancer Risk and Early Detection.

Black men in the United States face disproportionately high rates of prostate cancer incidence and mortality. Despite this, few prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing guidelines include race-conscious guidelines, and few studies exists on specific, equity-related barriers to accessing PSA testing for Black men. This qualitative study, conducted in collaboration with the Black and African Descent Collaborative for Prostate Cancer Action (BACPAC), explores the perspectives, beliefs, and equity-related barriers affecting PSA testing access among Black men in Washington State. Job satisfaction among medical assistants in German general practice: a qualitative study of social, structural and personal factors.

BACKGROUND: Medical assistants (MAs) are pivotal for access, coordination, and continuity in German primary care, yet workforce shortages and limited attention in research and policy persist. Prior studies quantify dissatisfaction and attrition drivers but offer little insight into how MAs who remain in practice experience job satisfaction. This study explores the social, personal and structural factors shaping MA job satisfaction in everyday work. METHODS: We conducted 14 semi-structured telephone interviews with MAs from German general practices (November-December 2023), recruited via the r

Identifying a structural brain network for social anxiety: connectome-based predictive modeling and network analyses in a transdiagnostic sample.

Trait social anxiety (SA) is continuous and can manifest across the entire spectrum of mental health, from subclinical levels in healthy controls to burdensome manifestations in major depressive disorder and finally full-blown disorders like social anxiety disorder (SAD). Although it has been proposed that SA is associated with deviations in the structural connectome, there is little research on the SA spectrum and its relation to abnormalities in brain structural networks. In this study, we aim to identify a structural brain network for SA across diagnostic groups using a transdiagnostic samp

Social Structure of Sheep Flocks at Points of the Production Cycle and Relationship to Disease Spread, Using a Simulated Epidemic of Footrot.

Footrot is one of the top five globally important diseases of sheep and causes lameness, leading to poor welfare and productivity. Transmission of Dichelobacter nodosus, the causative agent, occurs via surfaces such as pasture or bedding and persistence occurs from diseased sheep shedding bacteria into the environment; D. nodosus cannot replicate off host. High resolution proximity sensors were deployed on a flock of Poll Dorset sheep for 10-17 days at several points of the production cycle (teasing, tupping, pregnancy, and lactation (<6-week-old lambs)) between July 2018 and May 2021. Exposure, Extinction, and Cognitive Appraisals in Autistic Adults With Social Anxiety: Evidence From a Structured Speech Exposure Task.

Social anxiety (SA) is highly prevalent among autistic adults, yet little is known about how autistic people respond to common therapeutic strategies, such as exposure tasks. This study examined responses to a structured speech exposure task embedded within an 8-week modified cognitive-behavioral therapy (M-CBT) program. Thirty-two autistic adults with co-occurring SA completed pre- and post-task assessments of anxiety and related cognitive appraisals, including self-focused attention, perceived performance, appearance concerns, and threat appraisals. Participants reported appropriate engageme

Hematological cancer patients' social support, coping strategies, anxiety, depression and posttraumatic growth: a structural equation model.

ObjectivePosttraumatic growth (PTG), defined as positive psychological changes following traumatic events, has been observed in some hematological cancer patients during their disease course. These changes, encompassing shifts in life perspective, interpersonal relationships, and self-perception, are critical for psychological recovery. However, the interplay of social support, coping strategies, anxiety, and depression in shaping PTG remains unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore these associations in hematological cancer patients using a hypothetical model.MethodsFrom Augus

Structural conditions, social networks, and the HIV vulnerability among Indonesian male labour migrants and motorbike taxi drivers.

BACKGROUND: The Indonesian National AIDS report reveals that the percentage of HIV cases in the country is significantly higher in men compared to women, which is contrary to global AIDS data. Using a conceptual model of how social networks impact health, this paper describes how structural conditions, such as poverty, lack of job opportunities, and lack of income shaped the social networks of Indonesian men. It also describes how these social networks created opportunities for various social mechanisms, including social influence, peer pressure, and intimate contact, that facilitated HIV infe

Shared and distinct structural brain networks related to childhood maltreatment and social support: connectome-based predictive modeling.

Childhood maltreatment (CM) has been associated with changes in structural brain connectivity even in the absence of mental illness. Social support, an important protective factor in the presence of childhood maltreatment, has been positively linked to white matter integrity. However, the shared effects of current social support and CM and their association with structural connectivity remain to be investigated. They might shed new light on the neurobiological basis of the protective mechanism of social support. Using connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM), we analyzed structural connectom
