Too close for comfort: Intergenerational blame and disillusionment in social work supervision in the West Bank, Palestine.

Palestinian social work is taking form in the West Bank in the context of Israel's increasingly violent and restrictive multigenerational occupation, with limited relevant theory and research to guide practice. Social work students in Palestine, as elsewhere, learn to practice under the supervision of experienced social workers in clinics, hospitals, schools, and other agencies. Supervision becomes a key setting for the hidden curriculum-teaching and learning that is not officially recognized. We aimed to study training supervision in Palestine as a window on the moral organizing of the profes

Relationships between work-family conflict, infertility-related stress, resilience and social support in patients undergoing infertility treatment.

Fertility treatments can be physically and psychologically exhausting for those who do it due to high expectations and possible frustration with the negative results. Moreover, it demands time and high financial investment, which are sometimes stressful factors for the working patient. Two aspects that can ease this context are resilience and social support. The present article aims to investigate the levels of work-family conflict in individuals undergoing infertility treatment and their associations with stress, resilience, and social support. The survey of 242 patients addressed sociodemogr

Work-unit social capital and incident purchase of psychotropic medications: A longitudinal cohort-study of healthcare workers.

BACKGROUND: Whether workplace social capital affects employees' mental health is debated. We examined the association between work-unit aggregated social capital and incident purchase of psychotropic medications among employees. METHODS: We used data from the WHALE (Well-being in Hospital Employees) cohort study. The study population comprised 21,711 employees without recent psychotropic purchase-history nested within 2283 work units in the Capital Region of Denmark. Employees were invited to participate in a survey in March 2014 (86% response). We assessed workplace social capital by eight i

Redistribution and recognition in social work practice: Lessons learned from providing material assistance in child protection settings.

Despite growing recognition of the links between poverty and child maltreatment, little is known about the specific practices and strategies utilized to directly respond to families' poverty. One such practice is the provision of material assistance, which is widespread in child protection settings but has received negligible scholarly attention. The article aims to describe and conceptualize this underresearched practice and to explore the challenges workers face when implementing it. The study described here included 20 in-depth interviews conducted with social workers working in an innovati

These people can include biological fathers, step-fathers, brothers, cousins, aunts, mothers, and uncles. Violation of children takes place in a variety of ways, however, for the purpose of this paper, the focus is on child sexual abuse within the family system. A literature review is adopted as the methodology for the discussions in this paper. The purpose of this paper is firstly to demonstrate that child sexual ab

Comprehensive profiles of psychological and social work factors as predictors of site-specific and multi-site pain.

AIM OF THE STUDY: The COVID-19 pandemic has drawn attention to the benefit of wastewater-based epidemiology, particularly when case numbers are underreported. Underreporting may be an issue with mpox, where biological reasons and stigma may prevent patients from getting tested. Therefore, we aimed to assess the validity of wastewater surveillance for monitoring mpox virus DNA in wastewater of a Central European city and its association with official case numbers. METHODS: Wastewater samples were collected between 1 July and 28 August 2022 in the catchment area of Basel, Switzerland, and the n

Do Males and Females Conceptualise Work and Social Impairment Differently Following Treatment for Different Mental Health Problems?

The Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS) is used by psychiatric nurses for screening and evaluating patients' treatment outcomes for a variety of mental health problems. This study investigated longitudinal and gender measurement invariance of WSAS using structural equation modeling within a help-seeking problem gambling sample (n=445), and an intervention program for depression and anxiety sample (n=444). The concept of functional impairment was defined by all WSAS items in males and females at pre- and post-treatment assessments. These findings confirm that the WSAS is a robust and effica

Social Anxiety, Pain Catastrophizing and Return-To-Work Self-Efficacy in chronic pain: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Returning to work after periods of sick-leave due to chronic pain problems, involve a number of situations of interpersonal nature (e.g. meeting supervisors/insurance companies to adapt work setting to present functional level, receive help from colleagues, express pain, etc.). Since chronic pain has shown co-morbidity with social anxiety, it is of interest to investigate restraining factors in return to work among chronic pain sufferers from a social perspective. Catastrophizing is identified in both pain and social anxiety as a mechanism that might fuel a continuous bias

Decolonial Social Work as an Emerging Intellectual Field: Mapping Its Epistemic Foundations, Thematic Trajectories, and Paradigmatic Status.

PURPOSE: Decolonial social work scholarship has expanded over the past decade, yet the intellectual status of the field remains unclear. Despite publication growth and thematic development, there has been limited attention to the way in which diverse critical traditions have shaped the field's intellectual development. This study sought to move beyond descriptive mapping to theorize the field's intellectual character. METHOD: The study examined the field's intellectual development by analyzing a corpus of 227 English-language journal articles (1969-2026) using an integrated bibliometric resea

Navigating social isolation and scheduling flexibility: The unique experiences of immigrants engaging in remote and hybrid work.

BackgroundAt the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the increase in remote and hybrid work (RHW) positions opened new opportunities in the labor market for diverse populations in Canada, including immigrants. This change altered traditional workspaces for these employees, reshaping the interplay between daily activities, and blurring the spatial and temporal boundaries between occupational roles. Although immigrants are a vital part of Canada's economy, their experiences in RHW remain understudied in occupation-focused scholarship.ObjectiveTo explore the contextual factors shaping the emp

Beyond the Body: Women's Experiences of Life-Limiting Gynecological Cancer and Implications for Feminist Palliative Social Work.

Gynecological cancers are serious, potentially life-limiting illnesses affecting women's physical health, bodily identities, family roles, relationships, and psychosocial care needs. Although psycho-oncology literature has addressed cancer-related distress, the gendered, embodied, and relational dimensions of gynecological cancer remain insufficiently examined within feminist and palliative social work scholarship. This qualitative phenomenological study explores women's lived experiences of gynecological cancer and their psychosocial and palliative care needs from a feminist social work persp

Social Work Support for Anticipatory Grief in Rural Palliative Care Transitions: A Narrative Review for South Africa.

Family caregivers play a central role in palliative care, especially during hospital-to-home transitions, when rural families may assume complex care with limited preparation and uneven professional support. Anticipatory grief, the grief experienced before a loved one's death, can intensify emotional, practical, social and financial strain. A SANRA-informed, agenda-setting narrative review integrated literature on palliative care, caregiver burden, anticipatory grief, transitional care, rural healthcare and social work to develop a research and practice agenda for rural South African public he
