Antibiotic resistance of Escherichia coli in leachates from municipal solid waste landfills: comparison between semi-aerobic and anaerobic operations.

A bacterial susceptibility test to 31 antibiotics was conducted on the 80 isolated Escherichia coli from the leachates of the landfills in two different operations: semi-aerobic (SL) and anaerobic (AL) landfills. The average population of E. coli from SL and AL leachates were 2.2 × 10(4) and 9.4 × 10(3)CFU/100ml, respectively. Between 80.8% and 87.5% of the E. coli isolated from both leachates as resistant to the tested antibiotics and high resistances were found to doxycycline (53.8-68.8%), cephalothin (57.5-61.3%), tetracycline (51.3-67.5%) and minocycline (37.5-46.3%). Experimental and thermodynamic investigation on transfer of cadmium influenced by sulfur and chlorine during municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration.

We used two approaches to investigate the impact of sulfur and chlorine compounds on transfer of a semivolatile heavy metal, cadmium, during municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration: experiments using a tubular furnace reactor and thermodynamic equilibrium calculations. Artificial wastes representative of typical MSW in China with and without the presence of sulfur and chlorine compounds were combusted at 850 degrees C, and the partitioning of Cd among bottom ash, fly ash and flue gas was quantified. The results indicate that sulfur compounds in the elemental form and reduced state could stabi

Impact of antibiotics, iron oxide, and sodium sulfate on microbial community composition in laboratory-built municipal solid waste microcosms.

Municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills represent underexplored microbial ecosystems. Landfills contain variable amounts of antibiotic and construction and demolition (C&D) wastes, which have the potential to alter microbial metabolism due to biocidal or redox active components, and these effects are largely underexplored. To circumvent the challenge of MSW heterogeneity, we conducted a 65-day time series study on simulated MSW microcosms to assess microbiome changes using 16S rRNA sequencing in response to 1) Fe(OH)3 and 2) Na2SO4 to represent redox active components of C&D waste as well as 3)

Energy and environmental assessment of solid recovered fuels valorisation: Waste-to-Chemicals options vs co-combustion in cement plants.

The increasing interest in Waste-to-Chemical (WtC) technologies operating with Solid Recovered Fuels (SRF) from non-recyclable plastic streams requires a quantitative analysis on the actual convenience of this alternative valorization pathway. This study assesses SRF in selected WtC technologies for hydrogen and methanol production and compares it with the well-established practice of co-combustion in the cement industry. Two case studies are considered: the first one represents the current scenario where SRF is used in co-combustion for cement production meanwhile the chemical is produced by

Distribution, removal and ecological risk assessment of antibiotics in leachate from municipal solid waste incineration plants in Shanghai, China.

Leachate from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) incineration plants contains multiple antibiotics. However, current knowledge of antibiotics in such leachate is very limited compared to landfill leachate. In this study, the distribution, removal and ecological risks of 8 sulfonamides (SAs), 4 quinolones (FQs), and 4 macrolides (MLs) antibiotics in leachate from three MSW incineration plants in Shanghai were investigated. The results showed that 12 types of target antibiotics were detected at high concentrations (7737.3-13,758.7 ng/L) in the fresh leachate, exceeding the concentrations reported for l

Mercury risk assessment combining internal and external exposure methods for a population living near a municipal solid waste incinerator.

Risk assessments for human health have been conducted for municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) in many western countries, whereas only a few risk assessments have been performed for MSWIs in developing countries such as China where the use of waste incineration is increasing rapidly. To assess the mercury exposure risks of a population living near the largest MSWI in South China, we combined internal exposure and external exposure assessment with an individual-specific questionnaire. The mercury concentrations in air, soil, and locally collected food around the MSWI were assessed. The to

Characteristics and Material Flows of Diary Packaging in Municipal Solid Waste: A Case Study of Plastic Yoghurt Cups in Vienna.

Yoghurt cup packaging has received increasing attention regarding design-for-recycling. Packaging technologies like the three-component (3C) cup, consisting of a plastic cup, carton wrap and aluminum cover, reduce the amount of plastic needed. While individual components are well recyclable if consumers correctly separate and dispose of them after consumption, no data regarding consumer separation behavior of yoghurt cups is available. This study offers a detailed characterization of 3C cups and other yoghurt cup decoration types (2C) regarding their dismantling stage and content in mixed muni

Behavioural Systems Mapping of Solid Waste Management in Kisumu, Kenya, to Understand the Role of Behaviour in a Health and Sustainability Problem.

Poor solid waste management in Kisumu, Kenya, contributes to adverse health, social, and environmental outcomes as a result of open burning, illegal dumping, and reliance on landfills. Taking Kisumu as a case study, we use behavioural systems mapping (BSM) for the purpose of understanding the role of behaviour in this complex problem. We qualitatively analysed transcripts from focus groups and interviews with 45 stakeholders in Kisumu to construct a BSM of the perceived actors, behaviours, and behavioural influences affecting waste management, as well as causal links. Influences were analysed
