Primary somatosensory cortex oscillations in trigeminal neuralgia: laser-evoked signatures and their potential relevance to microvascular decompression.

Classical trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a severe chronic pain disorder characterized by sudden, intense facial pain attacks and represents a major burden for affected individuals. Microvascular decompression (MVD) can provide pain relief, yet not all patients benefit equally. A key challenge in selecting candidates for MVD lies in the limited predictive accuracy of current diagnostics, which mainly rely on subjective pain history and structural MRI findings. Since many asymptomatic individuals show neurovascular contact on imaging, its prognostic value remains limited. Electrophysiological meas

Endocannabinoid-mediated rescue of somatosensory cortex activity, plasticity and related behaviors following an early in life concussion.

Due to the assumed plasticity of immature brain, early in life brain alterations are thought to lead to better recoveries in comparison to the mature brain. Despite clinical needs, how neuronal networks and associated behaviors are affected by early in life brain stresses, such as pediatric concussions, have been overlooked. Here we provide first evidence in mice that a single early in life concussion durably increases neuronal activity in the somatosensory cortex into adulthood, disrupting neuronal integration while the animal is performing sensory-related tasks. This represents a previously

α-tACS over the somatosensory cortex enhances tactile spatial discrimination in healthy subjects with low alpha activity.

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous oscillations in the somatosensory cortex, especially of the alpha (8 - 14 Hz) and gamma (60 - 80 Hz) frequencies, affect tactile perception; moreover, these oscillations can be selectively modulated by frequency-matched transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on the basis of ongoing oscillatory brain activity. To examine whether tACS can actually improve tactile perception via alpha and gamma modulation, we measured the effects of 10-Hz and 70-Hz tACS (α- and γ-tACS) on the left somatosensory cortex on right-finger tactile spatial orientation discriminatio

Somatosensory and transcranial direct current stimulation effects on manual dexterity and motor cortex function: A metaplasticity study.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive neuromodulation may provide treatment strategies for neurological deficits affecting movement, such as stroke. For example, weak electrical stimulation applied to the hand by wearing a "mesh glove" (MGS) can transiently increase primary motor cortex (M1) excitability. Conversely, transcranial direct current stimulation with the cathode over M1 (c-tDCS) can decrease corticomotor excitability. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: We applied M1 c-tDCS as a priming adjuvant to MGS and hypothesised metaplastic effects would be apparent in improved motor performance and modulation of M1 i

Repetitive training of a synchronised movement induces short-term plastic changes in the human primary somatosensory cortex.

The aim of our study was to assess possible short-term plastic changes in the human primary somatosensory cortex (S1) induced by a repetitive synchronised movement of the right thumb and shoulder. We therefore performed a source localisation of somatosensory evoked potentials after median nerve stimulation in twelve healthy subjects before and after 1 h of motor training. We found a significant medial shift of the N20 dipole on the left hemisphere after training, whereas the dipole location on the right hemisphere remained unchanged. However, no significant correlation was seen between the dip

Neuronal activity in somatosensory cortex of monkeys using a precision grip. III. Responses to altered friction perturbations.

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the activity changes in single units of the somatosensory cortex in response to lubricating and adhesive coatings applied to a hand-held object. Three monkeys were trained to grasp an object between the thumb and index fingers and to lift and hold it stationary within a narrow position window for 1 s before release. Grip forces normal to the skin surface, load forces tangential to the skin surface, and the displacement of the object were measured on each trial. Adhesive (rosin) and lubricant (petroleum jelly) coatings were applied to the smooth

Demonstration of a Methodology for Long-Term Tracking of Intracortical Microstimulation-Evoked Perception Thresholds in Rat Somatosensory Cortex.

BACKGROUND: Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) offers a promising approach for enabling sensory feedback by directly activating neurons within the somatosensory cortex to more fully realize closed-loop neuroprosthetic systems. Despite this potential, questions persist regarding how stable ICMS-evoked responses remain over extended implantation periods. NEW METHOD: Given the paucity of preclinical tools for examining these temporal patterns, we extended a previously developed rodent nose-poke go/no-go behavioral framework to assess the reliability of ICMS perception thresholds across a 30-w

Laminar CBV and BOLD response characteristics over time and space in the human primary somatosensory cortex at 7T.

Uncovering the cortical representation of the body has been at the core of human brain mapping for decades, with special attention given to the digits. In the last decade, advances in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technologies have opened the possibility of non-invasively unraveling the 3rd dimension of digit representations in humans along cortical layers. In laminar fMRI, it is common to combine the use of highly sensitive blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) measurements with cerebral blood volume sensitive measurements, such as slice-saturation slab-inversion vascular space o

Cortical map remodeling in the intact hemisphere and functional recovery after focal lesion to the primary somatosensory cortex.

After injury to the primary somatosensory cortex (S1), most studies have focused on perilesional remodeling and its role in functional recovery. In contrast, alterations within the contralesional cortex remain poorly understood, even though the interhemispheric communication is disrupted by the lesion. Using electrophysiological mapping, we investigated in rats the time-course of cutaneous map remodeling in the intact hemisphere following unilateral focal damage to the forepaw area in S1 along with behavioral assessment of sensorimotor deficits. Cortical maps showed a representational dediffer

Acupuncture-induced changes in functional connectivity of the primary somatosensory cortex varied with pathological stages of Bell's palsy.

Bell's palsy is the most common cause of acute facial nerve paralysis. In China, Bell's palsy is frequently treated with acupuncture. However, its efficacy and underlying mechanism are still controversial. In this study, we used functional MRI to investigate the effect of acupuncture on the functional connectivity of the brain in Bell's palsy patients and healthy individuals. The patients were further grouped according to disease duration and facial motor performance. The results of resting-state functional MRI connectivity show that acupuncture induces significant connectivity changes in the

Localisation of the sensorimotor cortex during surgery for brain tumours: feasibility and waveform patterns of somatosensory evoked potentials.

OBJECTIVE: Intraoperative localisation of the sensorimotor cortex using the phase reversal of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) is an essential tool for surgery in and around the perirolandic gyri, but unsuccessful and perplexing results have been reported. This study examines the effect of tumour masses on the waveform characteristics and feasibility of SEP compared with functional neuronavigation and electrical motor cortex mapping. METHODS: In 230 patients with tumours of the sensorimotor region the SEP phase reversal of N20-P20 was recorded from the exposed cortex using a subdural gr

Manipulation of the somatosensory cortex modulates stimulus-induced repetitive ear movements in a seizure-sensitive strain of gerbil.

Some Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) respond to stimulation by seizures, the pattern of which changes progressively during development. We previously established a seizure-sensitive strain, MGS/Idr, in which all animals exhibit such stimulus-induced seizures. We have now noted that all adults of this strain also show repetitive backward movements of the ears at the ears at the beginning of stimulus-induced seizures, although the incidence varies with the individual. We examined whether the cerebral cortex was involved in these movements and found that electrical stimulation of an are

Implants for sustained drug release over the somatosensory cortex of the newborn rat: a comparison of materials and surgical procedures.

Drugs that interfere with neural transmission are an important tool in assessing the role of specific neurotransmitters in the development of the nervous system. Systemic drug treatments often produce neurodevelopmental effects with questionable specificity. Furthermore, many compounds of interest do not cross the blood-brain barrier. To overcome these limitations, either elvax or gelfoam implants have been previously employed to produce sustained drug release over specific brain regions. In this paper, stereotaxic coordinates are provided for reproducible insertion of drug-delivery systems ov

Five topographically organized fields in the somatosensory cortex of the flying fox: microelectrode maps, myeloarchitecture, and cortical modules.

Five somatosensory fields were defined in the grey-headed flying fox by using microelectrode mapping procedures. These fields are: the primary somatosensory area, SI or area 3b; a field caudal to area 3b, area 1/2; the second somatosensory area, SII; the parietal ventral area, PV; and the ventral somatosensory area, VS. A large number of closely spaced electrode penetrations recording multiunit activity revealed that each of these fields had a complete somatotopic representation. Microelectrode maps of somatosensory fields were related to architecture in cortex that had been flattened, cut par

Sequential roles of primary somatosensory cortex and posterior parietal cortex in tactile-visual cross-modal working memory: a single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (spTMS) study.

BACKGROUND: Both monkey neurophysiological and human EEG studies have shown that association cortices, as well as primary sensory cortical areas, play an essential role in sequential neural processes underlying cross-modal working memory. OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to further examine causal and sequential roles of the primary sensory cortex and association cortex in cross-modal working memory. METHODS: Individual MRI-based single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (spTMS) was applied to bilateral primary somatosensory cortices (SI) and the contralateral posterior parietal cortex

Action of GABAB receptor on local network oscillation in somatosensory cortex of oral part: focusing on NMDA receptor.

The balance of activity between glutamatergic and GABAergic networks is particularly important for oscillatory neural activities in the brain. Here, we investigated the roles of GABAB receptors in network oscillation in the oral somatosensory cortex (OSC), focusing on NMDA receptors. Neural oscillation at the frequency of 8-10 Hz was elicited in rat brain slices after caffeine application. Oscillations comprised a non-NMDA receptor-dependent initial phase and a later NMDA receptor-dependent oscillatory phase, with the oscillator located in the upper layer of the OSC. Baclofen was applied to in

Topographic and widespread auditory modulation of the somatosensory cortex: potential for bimodal sound and body stimulation for pain treatment.

Objective. There has been growing interest in understanding multisensory integration in the cortex through activation of multiple sensory and motor pathways to treat brain disorders, such as tinnitus or essential tremors. For tinnitus, previous studies show that combined sound and body stimulation can modulate the auditory pathway and lead to significant improvements in tinnitus symptoms. Considering that tinnitus is a type of chronic auditory pain, bimodal stimulation could potentially alter activity in the somatosensory pathway relevant for treating chronic pain. As an initial step towards t

Representation of Afferent Signals from Forearm Muscle and Cutaneous Nerves in the Primary Somatosensory Cortex of the Macaque Monkey.

Proprioception is one's overall sense of the relative positions and movements of the various parts of one's body. The primary somatosensory cortex (SI) is involved in generating the proprioception by receiving peripheral sensory inputs from both cutaneous and muscle afferents. In particular, area 3a receives input from muscle afferents and areas 3b and 1 from cutaneous afferents. However, segregation of two sensory inputs to these cortical areas has not been evaluated quantitatively because of methodological difficulties in distinguishing the incoming signals. To overcome this, we applied elec

Cortical connections to single digit representations in area 3b of somatosensory cortex in squirrel monkeys and prosimian galagos.

The ventral posterior nucleus of thalamus sends highly segregated inputs into each digit representation in area 3b of primary somatosensory cortex. However, the spatial organization of the connections that link digit representations of areas 3b with other somatosensory areas is less understood. Here we examined the cortical inputs to individual digit representations of area 3b in four squirrel monkeys and one prosimian galago. Retrograde tracers were injected into neurophysiologically defined representations of individual digits of area 3b. Cortical tissues were cut parallel to the surface in
