Pharmaceutical use by U.S. astronauts on space shuttle missions.

We evaluated in-flight use of medications from astronaut debriefings after 79 U.S. Space Shuttle missions. From the 219 records obtained (each representing one person-flight), 94% included some medication being taken during flight; of that number, 47% were for space motion sickness, 45% for sleep disturbances, and smaller percentages for headache, backache, and sinus congestion. Drugs were taken most often orally, followed in decreasing order of frequency by intranasal, intramuscular, and rectal routes. Drugs for space motion sickness were taken mostly during the first 2 d of flight, drugs for

Orthostatic hypotension of prolonged weightlessness: clinical models.

Orthostatic intolerance on return from space is a widely known consequence of space travel. Development of countermeasures against this problem is a major priority of the field of space physiology and medicine. The bedrest model is widely used in the investigation of this phenomenon, and has provided important data, but questions remain. In this article, we suggest that the disorders that produce chronic orthostatic hypotension have significant potential as models of microgravity-induced orthostatic intolerance. Understanding the pathophysiology of these syndromes may be useful to those involv

[Study on space motion sickness before, during and after spaceflight].

Space motion sickness has long been a difficult medical problem in human space flight. Because it is a group of syndromes of the astronauts in adaptation to the new space environment and is related to a wide range of factors, the research of space motion sickness is different from that of cardiovascular and pulmonary system. Subjective methods and qualitative investigation are frequently used, and quantitative analysis is limited since objective stimuli that can be used in specific space environment are few and the samples are small. So precise localization of the problem is very difficult. In

Relationship between stroke volume and sympathetic nerve activity: new insights about autonomic mechanisms of syncope.

Head-up tilt table experiments conducted in astronauts prior to and immediately after the NASA Neurolab Space Mission (STS-90) revealed that a reduction in stroke volume induced by moving from the supine to upright posture was associated with increased muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA). Although this finding was not unexpected, lower average stroke volume and greater average MSNA measured after space flight in both supine and upright postures were positioned in a linear fashion on the same stroke volume-MSNA stimulus-response relationship as the average pre-flight stroke volume and MSNA

Leapfrogging India:  Vikram Sarabhai and the developmental promise of geocentric spaceflight.

Historical accounts of the Indian space programme inevitably invoke the figure of Vikram Sarabhai (1919-71), credited as the father of its early development in the 1960s. A physicist by training, Sarabhai was best known for his 'leapfrogging' vision, into which social applications of space technology would catapult developing countries out of poverty. By interrogating official and unofficial records, speeches, cinematic productions and obituaries, this article examines how Indian leadership utilized Sarabhai's persona to substantiate the role of space flight in the nation's domestic modernizat

[Ocular counterrolling as an indicator of vestibular otolith function].

Space Motion Sickness (SMS) occurred in the first few days of space flight correlated with the vestibular function. As the main influence of weightlessness in space focused on the otolith receptors. The test of otolith function is of great importance. Although there are a lot of methods to test otolith function, at present ocular counterrolling is the only relative pure indicator of otolith function. It provide a valid method for predicting SMS susceptibility, it has great application prospect in the research of the SMS mechanism and the readaptability of vestibular function after space flight

Variations in DNA methylation and the role of regulatory factors in rice (Oryza sativa) response to lunar orbit stressors.

Deep space flight imposes higher levels of damage on biological organisms; however, its specific effects on rice remain unclear. To investigate the variations in DNA methylation under deep space flight conditions, this study examined rice seeds carried by Chang'e-5. After 23 days of lunar orbital flight, the samples were planted in an artificial climate chamber and subjected to transcriptome and DNA methylation sequencing during the tillering and heading stages. The methylation patterns in the rice genome exhibited variability in response to lunar orbital stressors. DNA methylation alters the

Establishment and Validation of a Novel Microgravity Simulation Platform for Ground-Based Animal Experiments.

Ground-based analog models, such as the hindlimb unloading (HU) technique, have been used for several decades in simulating microgravity effects on musculoskeletal studies. However, this model has seen limited technological advancement in several aspects. Here, the design and validation of the Microgravity Simulated Platform (MSP), a refined evolution of the classic HU model, is presented. The multipurpose engineered MSP apparatus is designed to overcome key limitations of existing models by enabling simultaneous study of a larger number of mice in compact space, with fewer lesions, less infla

Stability of Medicinal Nanoemulsions to Spaceflight: Insights From the StarMed Experiment.

Space missions require liquid drug formulations that remain physically stable and exhibit predictable release under launch, microgravity, and handling stresses. This study examined melatonin‑loaded nanoemulsions flown on the MAPHEUS‑15 sounding rocket, comparing an uncoated nanoemulsion (MN) with a chitosan‑coated nanoemulsion (CCN). Droplet size, polydispersity index (PDI), and zeta potential were measured at Day 0 and after spaceflight, ground vibration testing, matched ground controls, and laboratory storage. Melatonin release was quantified by dynamic dialysis and interpreted using a compa

Updates on Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome: Intracranial Changes.

In this review, we discuss current hypotheses on the pathophysiology of spaceflight-induced neuro-ocular syndrome and recent findings regarding microgravity-induced changes in venous, lymphatic, and glymphatic flow. We propose that spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) may not be explained entirely by intracranial pressure changes only and instead is likely multifactorial including cephalad fluid shifts and fluid outflow obstruction as possible inciting mechanism for the characteristic signs and symptoms of this syndrome. In all, we urge a multifactorial view of SANS whereby pred

Solid rocket motor insulation adhesives with sporicidal activity promote planetary protection for deep space missions.

To prevent microbial contamination of extraterrestrial biospheres, NASA has established planetary protection requirements for spacecraft bioburden reduction. For missions to land on the icy moons of the outer planets, solid rocket motors (SRM) commonly used as de-orbit and braking stages are of particular concern for planetary protection since microbial contamination may occur during spacecraft manufacturing and assembly and debris from the SRM can spread over large portions of the planetary surface after impact. In concept spacecraft designs for deep space missions, certain SRM regions are no

The brain-eye-liver axis during spaceflight: implications of hepatic dysfunction in spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome.

Spaceflight presents unique physiological challenges, with prolonged exposure to microgravity, cosmic radiation, and psychological stress impacting astronaut health. Hepatic dysfunction may contribute to the pathogenesis of astronaut diseases, including spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS), one of the largest physiologic barriers to future spaceflight. This paper explores the interconnected effects of spaceflight on the liver, particularly focusing on alterations in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, liver injury, inflammation, and compromised biotransformation processes. APHRODITE: A Compact Lab-on-Chip Biosensor for the Real-Time Analysis of Salivary Biomarkers in Space Missions.

One of the main challenges to be faced in deep space missions is to protect the health and ensure the maximum efficiency of the crew by preparing methods of prevention and in situ diagnosis. Indeed, the hostile environment causes important health problems, ranging from muscle atrophy, osteopenia, and immunological and metabolic alterations due to microgravity, to an increased risk of cancer caused by exposure to radiation. It is, therefore, necessary to provide new methods for the real-time measurement of biomarkers suitable for deepening our knowledge of the effects of space flight on the bal

Comparison of cubesat and microsat catastrophic failures in function of radiation and debris impact risk.

Occurrence level comparison of catastrophic failures due to radiation effects on electronic components or collision with space debris are studied in two types of satellites: cubesats and microsats. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) case studies are proposed, and the level of catastrophic failure occurrence is quantified for the same mission duration. The variation in the occurrence of failures is studied and there is a determination of which is more likely. Emphasis is placed on examining how an increase in space debris would affect the reliability of future space missions.

BioSentinel: Validating Sensitivity of Yeast Biosensors to Deep Space Relevant Radiation.

With the imminent human exploration of deep space, it is more important than ever to understand the biological risks of deep space radiation exposure. The BioSentinel mission will be the first biological payload to study the effects of radiation beyond low Earth orbit in 50 years. This study is the last in a collection of articles about the BioSentinel biological CubeSat mission, where budding yeast cells will be used to investigate the response of a biological organism to long-term, low-dose deep space radiation. In this study, we define the methodology for detecting the biological response t

Leaf yield and mineral content of mizuna in response to cut-and-come-again harvest, substrate particle size, and fertilizer formulation in a simulated spaceflight environment.

The Veggie plant-growth unit deployed onboard the International Space Station (ISS) grows leafy vegetables to supplement crew diets. "Cut-and-come-again" harvests are tested to maximize vegetative yield while minimizing crew time. Water, oxygen, and fertilizer delivery to roots of leafy greens growing in microgravity have become the center of attention for Veggie. Current Veggie technology wicks water into particulate root substrates incorporating controlled-release fertilizer (CRF). Layperson Physiological Tolerance and Operational Performance in Centrifuge-Simulated Spaceflight.

INTRODUCTION: Prior study has indicated that individuals of varied age, medical history, and limited-to-no experience tolerate spaceflight conditions. We sought to expand upon the understanding of layperson response to hypergravity conditions expected in commercial spaceflight by exposing subjects, following minimal training, to centrifuge-simulated, high-fidelity commercial spaceflight profiles. We further explored how these individuals perform in simulated operational activities during and following hypergravity.METHODS: Volunteer subjects participated in up to five centrifuge runs (maximum
