Study on Flexural Performance of Aluminum Alloy Gusset Joints Subjected to Bending Moment and Shear Force.

Aluminum alloy gusset (AAG) joints are widely applied in space reticulated shell structures. To investigate the flexural performance of AAG joints under the combined action of shear force and in-plane and out-of-plane bending moments, this analysis was developed by means of finite element (FE) models implemented in the non-linear code ABAQUS, and the accuracy of the FE simulation results based on the existing AAG joint test results was verified. The FE simulation results effectively described the mechanical properties of the AAG joints, including the failure mode, deformation process and bendi

Cross-scale modeling of bacteria-contaminant spatiotemporal dynamics in 3D bioprinted hydrogel for dye biodegradation.

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting enables precise construction of functional biohydrogels, yet effective simulation bacterial dynamics within these structures remains challenging. Here, we developed a novel gelatin/cellulose/sodium alginate (GCSA) biohydrogel incorporating Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 with superior mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Using Direct Blue 71 (DB71) as a model contaminant, we demonstrated efficient bioremediation while elucidating protective mechanisms through comprehensive experimental characterization. We established a cross-scale "hydrogel-bacteria-digita

Catheter configuration for mapping micro-anatomic reentries sustaining atrial fibrillation: A simulation study.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) can be sustained by intramural reentrant circuits within three-dimensional arrhythmogenic hubs formed by fibrotically-insulated myobundles. However, the efficacy of different multi-electrode mapping (MEM) to identify the micro-reentrant pathways sustaining AF remains undefined. An anisotropic atrial tissue structure (30 × 30 × 4 mm), incorporating a sub-endocardial laterally-insulated myobundle (15 × 2.5 × 1.5 mm) was simulated reflecting persistent AF conditions. Simulations included endocardial unipolar, bipolar, and omnipolar electrograms, with local activation time

The not-so-harmless maxillary primary first molar extraction.

BACKGROUND: Premature loss of primary molars has been associated with space loss and eruptive difficulties, especially when the loss occurs to the primary second molars and when it occurs early. This has not been thought to be the case for primary first molars. METHODS: The author revisited 13 cases from an earlier study on the effects of premature loss of maxillary primary molars. These longitudinal cases were scrutinized, using serial panoramic radiographs, to explain the irregular response in terms of dental migration. The author presents two case reports. RESULTS: In the earlier study, t

The Most Overestimated Q Value Regularization in High-Dimensional Discrete Action Spaces for Offline Reinforcement Learning.

Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) excels at learning control policies in high-dimensional action spaces, making it crucial for robotic manipulation. However, its real-world application is limited by costly and risky data collection. Offline reinforcement learning (offline RL) addresses this issue by training on precollected datasets but struggles with $Q$ value overestimation in high-dimensional discrete action spaces, where the number of out-of-distribution (OOD) actions rapidly increases, negatively impacting training stability. In this work, we propose the most overestimated $Q$ value regul

A survey for deep reinforcement learning in markovian cyber-physical systems: Common problems and solutions.

Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) is increasingly applied in cyber-physical systems for automation tasks. It is important to record the developing trends in DRL's applications to help researchers overcome common problems using common solutions. This survey investigates trends seen within two applied settings: motor control tasks, and resource allocation tasks. The common problems include intractability of the action space, or state space, as well as hurdles associated with the prohibitive cost of training systems from scratch in the real-world. Real-world training data is sparse and difficult

Comparative Analysis of Algorithms for Extracting Frames from Unexplored Regions in Molecular Dynamics Simulations.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are invaluable tools for studying molecular behavior, offering insights into the time-dependent evolution of molecular systems. However, these simulations often face significant limitations in exploring the full conformational space of the complex systems. The high dimensionality and the presence of energy barriers in the conformational landscape hinder the effective exploration of rare states, leaving large portions of the conformational space unexplored. To overcome these limitations and enhance the exploration of the conformational landscape, in this stud

Space-Flight- and Microgravity-Dependent Alteration of Mast Cell Population and Protease Expression in Digestive Organs of Mongolian Gerbils.

Mast cell (MC)-specific proteases are of particular interest for space biology and medicine due to their biological activity in regulating targets of a specific tissue microenvironment. MC tryptase and chymase obtain the ability to remodel connective tissue through direct and indirect mechanisms. Yet, MC-specific protease expression under space flight conditions has not been adequately investigated. Using immunohistochemical stainings, we analyzed in this study the protease profile of the jejunal, gastric, and hepatic MC populations in three groups of Mongolian gerbils-vivarium control, synchr

Accuracy of cardiac ablation catheter guidance by means of a single equivalent moving dipole inverse algorithm to identify sites of origin of cardiac electrical activation.

We have developed a system that could potentially be used to identify the site of origin of ventricular tachycardia (VT) and to guide a catheter to that site to deliver radio-frequency ablation therapy. This system employs the Inverse Solution Guidance Algorithm based upon Single Equivalent Moving Dipole (SEMD) localization method. The system was evaluated in in vivo swine experiments. Arrays consisting of 9 or 16 bipolar epicardial electrodes and an additional mid-myocardial pacing lead were sutured to each ventricle. Focal tachycardia was simulated by applying pacing pulses to each epicardia

Visuotactile representation of peripersonal space: a neural network study.

Neurophysiological and behavioral studies suggest that the peripersonal space is represented in a multisensory fashion by integrating stimuli of different modalities. We developed a neural network to simulate the visual-tactile representation of the peripersonal space around the right and left hands. The model is composed of two networks (one per hemisphere), each with three areas of neurons: two are unimodal (visual and tactile) and communicate by synaptic connections with a third downstream multimodal (visual-tactile) area. The hemispheres are interconnected by inhibitory synapses. We applie

Indirect imaging of the canine optic nerve, using metrizamide (optic thecography).

Between the optic nerve and its sheath is a small, CSF-filled space that communicates with the subarachnoid space of the brain. A technique for the radiographic opacification of the optic nerve subarachnoid space following the intrathecal injection of metrizamide was investigated in 8 dogs. The technique enabled indirect visualization of the optic nerves from the optic chiasm to the eyeball and of structures within the subarachnoid basal cisterns of the brain, including the optic chiasm, hypophysis, and blood vessels of the cerebral arterial circle. Displacement and obstruction of the optic ne

Development, Implementation, and Evaluation of a 'Virtual Patient' with Chronic Low Back Pain: An Education Resource for Physiotherapy Students.

Background: The management of chronic pain is inherently multidisciplinary, requiring collaboration across health and care professions because pain is multidimensional, involving psychological, social, biomedical, cultural, and environmental factors. However, pain education has often focused more on biomedical aspects, limiting the capacity of professionals to deliver integrated, person-centred care. Shifting pain education away from biomedically driven curricula may better prepare graduates for meaningful consultations and biopsychosocial care. Objective: This manuscript reports the developme

Enhancing Oral Mucosal Biopsy and Submucosal Injection Skills in Dental Students Using a Manikin-Compatible Buccal Mucosal Lesion Simulator.

PURPOSE: Oral mucosal biopsy and submucosal injection are essential clinical skills for dental students, yet traditional training relies on extraoral skin models that fail to replicate the texture of oral mucosa and the confined intraoral working space. This study aimed to develop a manikin-compatible buccal mucosal lesion simulator to address these limitations and evaluate its effectiveness in preclinical training. METHODS: An intraoral simulator was designed to fit a dental manikin head, featuring realistic mucosal texture and anatomical constraints of the buccal region. Quantitative scorin

Effect of Noninvasive Ventilation Mask Design on Upper Airway Washout: A Computational Fluid Dynamics Model.

Background: Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is a primary treatment for patients with acute hypercapnic respiratory failure. Mask choice is fundamental in the success of NIV. Mask design can influence the fit, comfort, and venting of the instrumental dead space. A new mask has been designed to reduce effect of anatomical dead space by washing out the airway of expired gases at end expiration. The aim of this investigation was to use computational fluid mechanics to model upper airway washout with different NIV mask designs. Methods: A 3D-printed head that represents the face and upper airways was

Characterization of protein-folding pathways by reduced-space modeling.

Ab initio simulations of the folding pathways are currently limited to very small proteins. For larger proteins, some approximations or simplifications in protein models need to be introduced. Protein folding and unfolding are among the basic processes in the cell and are very difficult to characterize in detail by experiment or simulation. Chymotrypsin inhibitor 2 (CI2) and barnase are probably the best characterized experimentally in this respect. For these model systems, initial folding stages were simulated by using CA-CB-side chain (CABS), a reduced-space protein-modeling tool. CABS emplo
