Effects of repetitive motor training on movement representations in adult squirrel monkeys: role of use versus learning.

Current evidence indicates that repetitive motor behavior during motor learning paradigms can produce changes in representational organization in motor cortex. In a previous study, we trained adult squirrel monkeys on a repetitive motor task that required the retrieval of food pellets from a small-diameter well. It was found that training produced consistent task-related changes in movement representations in primary motor cortex (M1) in conjunction with the acquisition of a new motor skill. In the present study, we trained adult squirrel monkeys on a similar motor task that required pellet re

Prefrontal cortex synchronization with the hippocampus and parietal cortex is strategy-dependent during spatial learning.

During spatial learning, subjects progressively adjust their navigation strategies as they acquire experience. The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) supports this operation, for which it may integrate information from distributed networks, such as the hippocampus (HPC) and the posterior parietal cortex (PPC). However, the mechanism underlying the prefrontal coordination with HPC and PPC during spatial learning is poorly understood. Here we show that during navigation trials, mice displayed two sequential behavioral stages: searching and exploration. Exclusively during searching, mice gradually i

Representation of visual landmarks in retrosplenial cortex.

The process by which visual information is incorporated into the brain's spatial framework to represent landmarks is poorly understood. Studies in humans and rodents suggest that retrosplenial cortex (RSC) plays a key role in these computations. We developed an RSC-dependent behavioral task in which head-fixed mice learned the spatial relationship between visual landmark cues and hidden reward locations. Two-photon imaging revealed that these cues served as dominant reference points for most task-active neurons and anchored the spatial code in RSC. This encoding was more robust after task acqu

Spatial distribution of mammography adherence in a Swiss urban population and its association with socioeconomic status.

PURPOSE: Local physical and social environment has a defining influence on individual behavior and health-related outcomes. However, it remains undetermined if its impact is independent of individual socioeconomic status. In this study, we evaluated the spatial distribution of mammography adherence in the state of Geneva (Switzerland) using individual-level data and assessed its independence from socioeconomic status (SES). METHODS: Georeferenced individual-level data from the population-based cross-sectional Bus Santé study (n = 5002) were used to calculate local indicators of spatial associ

Spatial disorientation and the Dyke-Davidoff-Masson syndrome.

A patient with Dyke-Davidoff-Masson Syndrome had a lifelong history of spatial disorientation and visual-spatial cognitive defects demonstrated by psychological tests. We suggest that the abnormalities of behavior and test performance may be related atrophic lesions demonstrated by pneumoencephalography and computerized axial tomography. We consider several explanations to account for the lack of compensation for these cognitive defects.

Cell behaviors that pattern developing tissues: the case of the vertebrate nervous system.

Morphogenesis from cells to tissue gives rise to the complex architectures that make our organs. How cells and their dynamic behavior are translated into functional spatial patterns is only starting to be understood. Recent advances in quantitative imaging revealed that, although highly heterogeneous, cellular behaviors make reproducible tissue patterns. Emerging evidence suggests that mechanisms of cellular coordination, intrinsic variability and plasticity are critical for robust pattern formation. While pattern development shows a high level of fidelity, tissue organization has undergone dr

Exploration, anxiety, and spatial memory in transgenic anophthalmic mice.

Contradictory results are found in the literature concerning the role of vision in the perception of space or in spatial navigation, in part because of the lack of murine models of total blindness used so far. The authors evaluated the spatial abilities of anophthalmic transgenic mice. These mice did not differ qualitatively from their wild-type littermates in general locomotor activity, spontaneous alternation, object exploration, or anxiety, but their level of exploratory activity was generally lower. In the spatial version of the water maze, they displayed persistent thigmotaxic behavior an

Isolation rearing affects sequential organization of motor behavior in post-pubertal but not pre-pubertal Lister and Sprague-Dawley rats.

OBJECTIVE: Dopaminergic and serotonergic modulation potently influences the sequential organization of rat movements in a simple unconditioned motor paradigm. Rats reared in social isolation post-weaning differ profoundly from their socially reared litter mates on behavioral, neurochemical, and neuroanatomical measures. This investigation examined (1) whether social isolation significantly affects the sequential organization of rat movements, (2) whether these changes occur at different ages, and (3) whether these changes differ across strains. METHOD: male Lister and Sprague Dawley rats rear

Ontogeny of schooling behavior and stage-specific vulnerability to valproic acid in Xenopus laevis larvae.

Perinatal exposure to chemicals such as valproic acid (VPA) increases the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Because maternal drug metabolism complicates the assessment of fetal impacts in mammalian models, Xenopus laevis tadpoles have emerged as an effective alternative for neurotoxicology. Tadpoles exhibit "schooling," a polarized social aggregation behavior. Previous studies, which exposed tadpoles to VPA continuously from stage NF42 to NF49, suggested that VPA-induced social behavior abnormalities are triggered during this period. In this study,

[Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on event-related potentials of mental rotation].

There are few researches on the modulation effect of transcranial direct current stimulation(tDCS) on complex spatial cognition. Especially, the influence of tDCS on the neural electrophysiological response in spatial cognition is not yet clear. This study selected the classic spatial cognition task paradigm (three-dimensional mental rotation task) as the research object. By comparing the changes in behavior and event-related potentials in different modes of tDCS before, during and after the application of tDCS, this study analyzed the behavioral and neurophysiological effects of tDCS on menta

Developmental change in spatial grouping activity among children with early focal brain injury: evidence from a modeling task.

Spatial construction skills were assessed in children with left (LH) or right (RH) hemisphere focal brain injury and control children. Children copied simple and complex block models which were rated on accuracy and spatial strategy. The accuracy of simple and complex constructions for 4- to 5-year-old children with LH injury was indistinguishable from 4-year-old controls. However, although they were able to produce accurate complex constructions, the processes used by children with LH injury differed from those of normal children. On both simple and complex constructions, 4- to 5-year-old chi

Anopheles ecology and serological evidence of malaria exposure in clinically malaria-free areas of Menoreh Hills Central Java, Indonesia.

Malaria transmission in near-elimination settings is often sustained by complex interactions between vector ecology, environmental conditions, and human activities. The Menoreh Hills of Central Java remain an area of persistent malaria exposure despite limited clinical cases, yet the ecological and epidemiological drivers are not fully understood. This study examined the ecology, spatial distribution, and host-feeding behavior of Anopheles mosquitoes together with larval habitat characteristics and human serological evidence of exposure across four villages in a low-transmission region approac

Navigation in a Space With Moving Objects: Rats Can Avoid Specific Locations Defined With Respect to a Moving Robot.

Animals can organize their behavior with respect to other moving animals or objects; when hunting or escaping a predator, when migrating in groups or during various social interactions. In rats, we aimed to characterize spatial behaviors relative to moving objects and to explore the cognitive mechanisms controlling these behaviors. Three groups of animals were trained to avoid a mild foot-shock delivered in one of three positions: either in front, on the left side, or on the right side of a moving robot. We showed the rats can recognize and avoid these specific areas. The avoidance behavior sp

Spatial imagery relies on a sensory independent, though sensory sensitive, functional organization within the parietal cortex: a fMRI study of angle discrimination in sighted and congenitally blind individuals.

Although vision offers distinctive information to space representation, individuals who lack vision since birth often show perceptual and representational skills comparable to those found in sighted individuals. However, congenitally blind individuals may result in impaired spatial analysis, when engaging in 'visual' spatial features (e.g., perspective or angle representation) or complex spatial mental abilities. In the present study, we measured behavioral and brain responses using functional magnetic resonance imaging in sighted and congenitally blind individuals during spatial imagery based

Great apes track hidden objects after changes in the objects' position and in subject's orientation.

Eight chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), five bonobos (Pan paniscus), five gorillas (Gorilla gorilla), and seven orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) were presented with two invisible object displacement tasks. In full view of the subject, a food item was hidden under one of three opaque cups resting on a platform and, after an experimental manipulation, the subject was allowed to select one of the cups. In the rotation task, the platform was rotated 180 degrees while the subject remained stationary. In the translocation task, the platform remained stationary while the subject walked to the opposite side f

Spatial proteomics: technical evolution and applications in cancer research.

Spatial proteomics is reshaping tissue-based cancer research by linking protein expression to cellular identity, tissue architecture and clinical behavior. Conventional proteomics has provided powerful tools for protein identification and quantification, but most bulk workflows erase the spatial relationships that define tumor ecology. In contrast, spatial proteomics combines multiplexed imaging, mass spectrometry-based tissue analysis, region-selected profiling and computational spatial statistics to measure proteins in their native tissue context. This review summarizes the development of pr

Solubilization Mechanism of Eco-Friendly Fluorocarbon Surfactants for Fluorinated Monomers: Perfluorinated Chain Length Effect and Dynamic Thermal Response.

Extremely hydrophobic fluoromonomers are highly prone to phase separation during emulsion polymerization. Overcoming macroscopic experimental limitations, this study employs all-atom molecular dynamics (AA-MD) simulations to investigate the molecular-level solubilization behavior and thermal adaptability of the novel eco-friendly zwitterionic fluorocarbon surfactant-perfluorohexyl (butyl) sulfonyl carboxy propylamino dimethyl betaine (PFSC) and the traditional hydrocarbon surfactant SDS toward the monomers tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and perfluoromethyl vinyl ether (PMVE). Multimodal Integration Across Spatiotemporal Scales to Guide Invertebrate Locomotion.

Locomotion is a hallmark of organisms which has enabled adaptive radiation to an extraordinarily diverse class of ecological niches, and allows animals to move across vast distances. Sampling from multiple sensory modalities enables animals to acquire rich information to guide locomotion. Locomotion without sensory feedback is haphazard; therefore, sensory and motor systems have evolved complex interactions to generate adaptive behavior. Notably, sensory-guided locomotion acts over broad spatial and temporal scales to permit goal-seeking behavior, whether to localize food by tracking an attrac

Dietary alpha-lipoic acid prevents depression-like and anxiety-like behavior under aircraft noise exposure in young adult male mice.

OBJECTIVE: Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) can act as a dietary supplement with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and an exercise-mimetic therapy. In this study, we hypothesized that dietary supplementation with ALA would protect against aircraft noise (AN)-induced depression-like and anxiety-like behaviors and spatial memory loss in a mouse mode. METHODS: Mice were randomly divided into four groups. Group 1 and group 2 mice received vehicle diet plus non-AN and vehicle diet plus AN 2h daily for 6 weeks, respectively. Group 3 and group 4 mice received ALA diet plus non-AN and ALA diet plus

Formulation of a new sir Model with Non-local Mobility.

In this manuscript, we develop a mobility-based Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered (SIR) model to elucidate the dynamics of pandemic propagation. While traditional SIR models within the field of epidemiology aptly characterize transitions among susceptible, infected, and recovered states, they typically neglect the inherent spatial mobility of particles. To address this limitation, we introduce a novel dynamical SIR model that incorporates nonlocal spatial motion for three distinct particle types, thereby bridging the gap between epidemiological theory and real-world mobility patterns.
