Hearing, language, speech, vestibular, and dentofacial disorders in fetal alcohol syndrome.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is characterized by congenital anomalies traditionally associated with hearing disorders. The present study sought to (a) evaluate possible central hearing loss; (b) verify and extend previous observations on sensorineural and conductive hearing losses; (c) evaluate possible vestibular disorders; (d) examine the relationships between hearing, speech, language, vestibular, and dentofacial disorders in FAS patients; and (e) evaluate the influence of patient age, race, and gender on the expression of these morbidities. A biracial group of 22 FAS patients (aged 3 to 26

[Neuropsychological aspects of disorders of higher functions of the cerebral cortex in children with speech disorders].

A complex and multiaspects study of the high cerebral function--speech, gnosis, praxis, gesture and mimics has been coducted on 98 children with proved speech defects--alalia, dyslalia, dysgraphia, dyslexia and stammering. In high percentage of the children various focal neurological signs have been established (so called soft neurological symptoms). Very high was the percentage of the children with visual-space defects. Rhythm gnosis and praxis suffered mostly in children with motor alalia. The tests for gesture and mimics prevailed. The unified mechanism of the disturbed development of the s

Understanding speech and language in KIF1A-associated neurological disorder.

KIF1A-associated neurological disorder (KAND) is a genetic condition characterised by motor, cognitive and ophthalmologic features. The speech and language phenotype have not been systematically analysed. Here, we assess speech and language using observer- and clinician-reported outcomes, and performance outcome measures. 44 individuals (25 female) with KAND (median age 7 years, range 1-60 years) participated. Median age at diagnosis was 4 years (range 0.5-58 years). KIF1A variants were missense (41/44 individuals, 93%), intragenic deletion (2/44, 5%) and splice site (1/44, 2%). Age at first w

Atypical Callosal Morphology in Children with Speech Sound Disorder.

Speech sound disorder (SSD) is common, yet its neurobiology is poorly understood. Recent studies indicate atypical structural and functional anomalies either in one hemisphere or both hemispheres, which might be accompanied by alterations in inter-hemispheric connectivity. Indeed, abnormalities of the corpus callosum - the main fiber tract connecting the two hemispheres - have been linked to speech and language deficits in associated disorders, such as stuttering, dyslexia, aphasia, etc. However, there is a dearth of studies examining the corpus callosum in SSD. Here, we investigated whether a

Effectiveness of tongue-tie division for speech disorder in children.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of tongue-tie division (frenuloplasty/ frenulotomy) for speech articulation disorder in children with ankyloglossia (tongue-tie). METHODS: Articulation test was done in five children (3-8 years old) with speech problems who underwent tongue-tie division. The test consisted of 50 pictures of common Japanese words with 2-3 syllables. The patients were interviewed by a speech therapist and asked to pronounce what the picture card showed. Misarticulations of substitution, omission, and distortion were assessed. The preoperative

Intervention efficacy and intensity for children with speech sound disorder.

PURPOSE: Clinicians do not have an evidence base they can use to recommend optimum intervention intensity for preschool children who present with speech sound disorder (SSD). This study examined the effect of dose frequency on phonological performance and the efficacy of the multiple oppositions approach. METHOD: Fifty-four preschool children with SSD were randomly assigned to one of three intervention conditions. Two intervention conditions received the multiple oppositions approach either 3 times per week for 8 weeks (P3) or once weekly for 24 weeks (P1). A control (C) condition received a

Spasmodic dysphonia: a laryngeal control disorder specific to speech.

Spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is a rare neurological disorder that emerges in middle age, is usually sporadic, and affects intrinsic laryngeal muscle control only during speech. Spasmodic bursts in particular laryngeal muscles disrupt voluntary control during vowel sounds in adductor SD and interfere with voice onset after voiceless consonants in abductor SD. Little is known about its origins; it is classified as a focal dystonia secondary to an unknown neurobiological mechanism that produces a chronic abnormality of laryngeal motor neuron regulation during speech. It develops primarily in females

A comparison of word lexicality in the treatment of speech sound disorders.

The goal of this research programme was to evaluate the role of word lexicality in effecting phonological change in children's sound systems. Four children with functional speech sound disorders (SSDs) were enrolled in an across-subjects multiple baseline single-subject design; two were treated using high-frequency real words (RWs) and two were treated using (low-frequency) non-words (NWs). Dependent variables were learning during treatment, generalization of treated and untreated sounds post-treatment and error consistency indices. The oldest child in the NW group demonstrated slightly greate

Speech sound disorder influenced by a locus in 15q14 region.

Despite a growing body of evidence indicating that speech sound disorder (SSD) has an underlying genetic etiology, researchers have not yet identified specific genes predisposing to this condition. The speech and language deficits associated with SSD are shared with several other disorders, including dyslexia, autism, Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS), and Angelman's Syndrome (AS), raising the possibility of gene sharing. Furthermore, we previously demonstrated that dyslexia and SSD share genetic susceptibility loci. The present study assesses the hypothesis that SSD also shares susceptibility loci

Linkage of speech sound disorder to reading disability loci.

BACKGROUND: Speech sound disorder (SSD) is a common childhood disorder characterized by developmentally inappropriate errors in speech production that greatly reduce intelligibility. SSD has been found to be associated with later reading disability (RD), and there is also evidence for both a cognitive and etiological overlap between the two disorders. The present study tested whether SSD is linked to replicated risk loci for RD. METHOD: One hundred and eleven probands with SSD and their 76 siblings were tested with measures of speech, phonological memory (Nonword Repetition-NWR), and phonolog

Speech motor control disorder after HIV infection.

We examined the clinical characteristics of six right-handed patients who developed speech motor control disorders after human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. They exhibited an ataxic dysarthria, characterized by irregular articulatory breakdowns in consonant and vowel timing; were slow in timed decision-making tasks; and had impaired procedural learning. Other aspects of the neurologic examination revealed signs of diffuse CNS involvement including action-intention tremors, ataxic gait, and release signs. None developed HIV-associated dementia during 1 year of follow-up. Motor speech

[Buccolinguofacial apraxia--a probably psychogenic speech and deglutition disorder].

Difficulties in swallowing and speaking may in rare cases be due to buccolinguofacial apraxia, which usually results from lesions of the frontal operculum--mostly on the left side--or of connections to and from it. Two cases with this disorder, probably due to a multiple sclerosis, are presented and the differential diagnosis is discussed.

Speech and Language Markers of Bipolar Disorder: Challenges and Opportunities.

BACKGROUND: Clinicians aspire to predict the emergence of Bipolar Disorder (BD) in a timely manner. To accomplish this, markers reflecting mental states that can be gathered non-invasively and at large scale are needed. Here, we systematically evaluate evidence relating speech-based markers to mood states in BD. METHODS: We searched Medline and Google Scholar for all published studies in English up to February 2026 on the use of speech markers in BD. We undertook thematic analysis on abstracts using topic modeling and a qualitative gap analysis to identify potential opportunities for future r

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy with Predominant Speech/Language Disorder.

We herein report a rare case of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) that initially presented as progressive fluent aphasia and echolalia. A 75-year-old woman exhibited significant language impairments for 2 years before developing motor symptoms, including vertical gaze palsy and frequent falls. Neuroimaging revealed asymmetric frontal and midbrain atrophy, with reduced perfusion in the left frontal and parietal lobes. This case highlights the importance of recognizing atypical PSP presentations, particularly language-dominant variants that may mimic other neurodegenerative disorders. Early i

Speech and language deficits are central to SETBP1 haploinsufficiency disorder.

Expressive communication impairment is associated with haploinsufficiency of SETBP1, as reported in small case series. Heterozygous pathogenic loss-of-function (LoF) variants in SETBP1 have also been identified in independent cohorts ascertained for childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), warranting further investigation of the roles of this gene in speech development. Thirty-one participants (12 males, aged 0; 8-23; 2 years, 28 with pathogenic SETBP1 LoF variants, 3 with 18q12.3 deletions) were assessed for speech, language and literacy abilities. Broader development was examined with standardised

Dorsal language stream anomalies in an inherited speech disorder.

Speech disorders are highly prevalent in the preschool years, but frequently resolve. The neurobiological basis of the most persistent and severe form, apraxia of speech, remains elusive. Current neuroanatomical models of speech processing in adults propose two parallel streams. The dorsal stream is involved in sound to motor speech transformations, while the ventral stream supports sound/letter to meaning. Data-driven theories on the role of these streams during atypical speech and language development are lacking. Here we provide comprehensive behavioural and neuroimaging data on a large nov

Grey matter volume in developmental speech and language disorder.

Developmental language disorder (DLD) and developmental speech disorder (DSD) are common, yet their etiologies are not well understood. Atypical volume of the inferior and posterior language regions and striatum have been reported in DLD; however, variability in both methodology and study findings limits interpretations. Imaging research within DSD, on the other hand, is scarce. The present study compared grey matter volume in children with DLD, DSD, and typically developing speech and language. Compared to typically developing controls, children with DLD had larger volume in the right cerebel

Vowel acoustics in dysarthria: speech disorder diagnosis and classification.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which vowel metrics are capable of distinguishing healthy from dysarthric speech and among different forms of dysarthria. METHOD: A variety of vowel metrics were derived from spectral and temporal measurements of vowel tokens embedded in phrases produced by 45 speakers with dysarthria and 12 speakers with no history of neurological disease. Via means testing and discriminant function analysis (DFA), the acoustic metrics were used to (a) detect the presence of dysarthria and (b) classify the dysarthria subtype. RESULTS: Signifi
