Arthropod Bites and Stings.

Arthropods, including insects and arachnids, significantly affect humans as vectors for infectious diseases. Arthropod bites and stings commonly cause minor, usually self-limited reactions; however, some species are associated with more severe complications. Spider bites are rarely life-threatening. There are two medically relevant spiders in the United States. Widow spider (Latrodectus) envenomation can cause muscle spasm and severe pain that should be treated with analgesics and benzodiazepines. Antivenom is not widely available in the United States but may be considered for severe, refracto

[Cases of mass karakurt bites in Uzbekistan].

In 1981-1984 in Uzbekistan (the Navoi and Khorezm Provinces, the Karakalpak ASSR) 463 cases of bites by Latrodectus tredecimguttatus have been registered (372 cases, in 1983). The highest number of bites was observed at the end of May and the first half of July. Mild and subacute intoxications prevailed. No fatal outcomes were registered. The L. tredecimguttatus bites occurred mostly during the night sleep in the tents. A high number of spiders in the pastures (3-4 specimens per sq. meter) was due to abundant atmospheric precipitation and heat in 1980-1982. The treatment of spiders' accumulati

Recent advances in the understanding of brown spider venoms: From the biology of spiders to the molecular mechanisms of toxins.

The Loxosceles genus spiders (the brown spiders) are encountered in all the continents, and the clinical manifestations following spider bites include skin necrosis with gravitational lesion spreading and occasional systemic manifestations, such as intravascular hemolysis, thrombocytopenia and acute renal failure. Brown spider venoms are complex mixtures of toxins especially enriched in three molecular families: the phospholipases D, astacin-like metalloproteases and Inhibitor Cystine Knot (ICK) peptides. Other toxins with low level of expression also present in the venom include the serine pr

Arterial thrombosis and gangrene secondary to arachnidism.

Spider bites can cause local tissue damage as well as life-threatening complications. This is a case report of a female with no history of lower extremity vascular disease who presented with a spider bite on the dorsum of her foot. She developed progressive necrosis and eventually suffered limb loss despite attempts at revascularization.

Envenomation from the brown recluse spider: review of mechanism and treatment options.

The brown recluse spider in commonly found throughout the midsouth region of the United States. Bites from the brown recluse occur when the spider is trapped in clothing or its nest is otherwise disturbed. The bite may be undetected by the patient until hours or days later when a characteristic lesion develops. Mild reactions to envenomation are usually limited to a lesion only. In some cases, a severe reaction results which can be life-threatening. Although there have been case reports of various pharmacological agents used for the treatment of brown recluse bites, none have been shown to be

Brown recluse spider (Loxosceles reclusa) envenomation leading to acute hemolytic anemia in six adolescents.

Loxosceles reclusa (brown recluse spider) bites often cause local envenomation reactions; however, acute hemolysis from systemic loxoscelism is rare. To highlight this important diagnostic consideration for unexplained hemolysis in areas endemic for brown recluse spiders, we report on 6 adolescents with acute hemolytic anemia from presumed L reclusa bites.

Whole venom of Loxosceles similis activates caspases-3, -6, -7, and -9 in human primary skin fibroblasts.

Spiders of the Loxosceles genus represent a risk to human health due to the systemic and necrotic effects of their bites. The main symptoms of these bites vary from dermonecrosis, observed in the majority of cases, to occasional systemic hemolysis and coagulopathy. Although the systemic effects are well characterized, the mechanisms of cell death triggered by the venom of these spiders are poorly characterized. In this study, we investigated the cell death mechanisms induced by the whole venom of the spider Loxosceles similis in human skin fibroblasts. Our results show that the venom initiates

Toxicity of the venom of Latrodectus (Araneae: Theridiidae) spiders from different regions of Argentina and neutralization by therapeutic antivenoms.

"Black widow" spiders belong to the genus Latrodectus and are one of the few spiders in the world whose bite can cause severe envenomation in humans and domestic animals. In Argentina, these spiders are distributed throughout the country and are responsible for the highest number of bites by spiders of toxicological sanitary interest. Here, we studied the toxicity and some biochemical and immunochemical characteristics of eighteen venom samples from Latrodectus spiders from eight different provinces of Argentina, and the neutralization of some of these samples by two therapeutic antivenoms use

Venomous spiders of Albania -does an increase of temperature influence the toxicity of spider venom?

UNLABELLED: Black widow spiders (Latrodectus sp.) are distributed worldwide, and in Albania the L. tredecimguttatus Rossi, 1790 has been the dominant spider. Other medically important spiders in Albania include the brown recluse with symptoms known as loxoscelism, the false black widow and the egg sac spiders; the last two inducing similar symptoms to a wasp sting. METHODS: The data analyzed is from a decade-long study of 125 patients hospitalized in the regional hospital of Fier County, in the Western Lowland of Albania from May 2009 and to October 2018. OBJECTIVE: Although the venom is rar

Along came a spider: Medicine's most famous spider eponyms.

Spiders have long been admired for the beauty of their webs. They are celebrated in popular culture as well as in medical eponyms. This contribution provides the historical background for three spider-related eponyms: nevus araneus (spider angioma), arachnodactyly, and the arachnoid mater. Nevus araneus was first named and described by Sir Erasmus Wilson in 1842. Arachnodactyly was described in 1896 by Antoine Marfan using the term pattes d'araignée, which means spider legs. In 1902, Emile Charles Achard proposed the term arachnodactyly for this clinical finding. The arachnoid mater had been n

Envenomation by Steatoda borealis (Araneae: Theridiidae) in Connecticut, USA.

We report a case of envenomation by Steatoda borealis (Hentz, 1850) in Connecticut in late spring 2021. The bitten subject was a 60-yr-old female Caucasian. The bite occurred upon disturbing some books in her basement. She reported a painful stinging bite on her finger followed by the formation of an erythematous macule at the site of the bite which was gone the next day. There was no sign of necrosis. The spider was recovered directly at that time. The victim reported that later that night she experienced heart palpitations. This is the first report of envenomation by S. borealis, a common sp

Synanthropic spiders, including the global invasive noble false widow Steatoda nobilis, are reservoirs for medically important and antibiotic resistant bacteria.

The false widow spider Steatoda nobilis is associated with bites which develop bacterial infections that are sometimes unresponsive to antibiotics. These could be secondary infections derived from opportunistic bacteria on the skin or infections directly vectored by the spider. In this study, we investigated whether it is plausible for S. nobilis and other synanthropic European spiders to vector bacteria during a bite, by seeking to identify bacteria with pathogenic potential on the spiders. 11 genera of bacteria were identified through 16S rRNA sequencing from the body surfaces and chelicerae

Potential Implications for Designing Drugs Against the Brown Spider Venom Phospholipase-D.

Loxoscelism refers to the clinical symptoms that develop after brown spider bites. Brown spider venoms contain several phospholipase-D isoforms, which are the main toxins responsible for both the cutaneous and systemic effects of loxoscelism. Understanding of the phospholipase-D catalytic mechanism is crucial for the development of specific treatment that could reverse the toxic effects caused by the spider bite. Based on enzymatic, biological, structural, and thermodynamic tests, we show some features suitable for designing drugs against loxoscelism. Firstly, through molecular docking and mol

Evidence against the involvement of Mycobacterium ulcerans in most cases of necrotic arachnidism.

Cutaneous lesions caused by M. ulcerans were shown to bear only a superficial resemblance to those produced by certain spider species. M. ulcerans was not found in either the venoms or the midguts of several Australian spiders, and deliberate contamination by inoculation of the fangs and digestive system of the wolf spider, Lycosa godeffroyi, did not result in permanent colonization. M. ulcerans was successfully introduced into the skin of mice through a small trauma site similar to that caused by a spider bite. However, because M. ulcerans was shown to survive on exposed surfaces for only a s

Black house spiders are unlikely culprits in necrotic arachnidism: a prospective study.

Twenty-five patients with definite bites by Badumna spp. spiders were recruited prospectively. Bites occurred across Australia, 92% from October to March, and most during daylight. Pain occurred in all cases, was severe in seven cases, with a median duration of 5 min. Other effects included: puncture marks (24%), swelling (12%) and erythema (68%). Minor systemic effects occurred in 4 bites. No patient had a necrotic ulcer (0%; 97.5% confidence interval 0-14%). Black house spiders (Badumna spp.) are unlikely to cause necrosis, contrary to reports of suspected bites. Patients can be reassured an

Spider (Latrodectus hesperus) poisoning through the conjunctiva. A case report.

Spider poisoning is usually a result of the direct bite, envenomation through the chelicera, of the spider. Reported is an unusual case in which poisoning occurred through the conjunctiva when a fragment from a smashed black widow spider (Latrodectus hesperus) flew into a patient's eye. In addition to an immediate local reaction involving the periorbital tissues, the patient experienced systemic effects.
