CASE SUMMARY: A 5-year-old, male castrated cat was presented with lethargy, tachypnea, and pleural and pericardial effusion. Echocardiographic assessment revealed an irregular hyperechoic structure that occupied a large portion of the thoracic cavity, expanding from the pericardium and surrounding the heart. Postmortem evaluation, histopathology and immunohistochemistry for factor VIII-related antigen confirmed the diagnosis of pericardial and splenic hemangiosarcoma.
RELEVANCE AND NOVEL INFORMATION: This case report highlights that hemangiosarcoma, despite being rarely reported, should be co

T-cell lymphoproliferative processes in the spleen are rare and it is important to study normal T cell subsets in the spleen to understand the splenic milieu in which they arise. True malignant T-cell processes including hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma and T-cell large granular lymphocytic leukemia occur in the spleen, but other atypical reactive T-cell proliferations and those of uncertain significance also have been described. Proper distinction of florid T cell responses from malignant T-cell neoplasms has important therapeutic implications for the patient.

Intrapancreatic accessory spleen (IPAS) is a congenital anomaly usually misdiagnosed as a pancreatic neoplasm. For five years and four months, we collected seven IPASs located in the tail of the pancreas in four patients diagnosed by endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA). All cases had associated cell block preparations. Each patient underwent endoscopic ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies. The patients ranged in age from 57 to 73 years (mean age 65.7 years old). All lesions were well-defined, 1-1.9 cm in size (mean 1.5 cm)

The sonographic features of abdominal lymphadenopathy in 35 patients with history of intravenous drug addiction were analyzed to assess their clinical significance. Of the 28 proven cases, 15 were due to reactive hyperplasia, 10 to infections, and three to neoplasms. Sonography was helpful in assessing the pathologic nature of these nodes. Most nodes attributable to reactive hyperplasia were small (less than or equal to 1.5 cm diam) and showed a characteristic distribution in the porta hepatis, celiac axis, and peripancreatic regions. Hypoechoic nodes were always pathologic, due either to tube

Discordant lymphomas involving mature B-cell and T-cell neoplasms are uncommon and may be missed when atypical clinical manifestations are attributed to a known aggressive lymphoma. We report a 71-year-old man who presented with fever, generalized lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, splenic infarction, anemia, and thrombocytopenia. Bone marrow, flow cytometry, and tissue immunohistochemistry supported stage IVB diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), non-germinal-center B-cell-like subtype, with bone marrow involvement. After dose-reduced R-CHOPE chemotherapy, partial remission was achieved, but thr

Patients with CD5-expressing lymphomas presenting with splenomegaly are frequently diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The most important differential diagnosis is mantle cell lymphoma, both in its classical and leukemic, non-nodal forms, given its prognostic and therapeutic implications. Other small B-cell neoplasms that frequently involve the spleen and occasionally express CD5 include the splenic marginal zone lymphoma, hairy cell leukemia and, rarely, lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma. The frequency of CD5 positivity depends in part on the sensitivity of the detection methods employed. U

Myelofibrosis (MF) is a clinical manifestation of chronic BCR-ABL1-negative chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms. Splenomegaly is one of the major clinical manifestations of MF and is directly linked to splenic extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH). EMH is associated with abnormal trafficking patterns of clonal hematopoietic cells due to the dysregulated bone marrow (BM) microenvironment leading to progressive splenomegaly. Several recent data have emphasized the role of several cytokines for splenic EMH. Alteration of CXCL12/CXCR4 pathway could also lead to splenic EMH by migrated clonal hematop

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) represents the most common intramural mesenchymal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract, but the synchronous occurrence of GIST in the stomach and gynecological cancer is rare. We present a unique case of a 56-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with the synchronous development of GIST and an isolated parenchymal splenic metastasis of ovarian cancer. She underwent a wide local excision of gastric lesions with splenectomy. A morphological (histological and immunohistochemical) study established a spindle-cell type of gastrointestinal tumor that expresse

In this study, rasH2-Tg mice treated with N-methyl-N-nitrosurea (MNU) developed exuberant hematoproliferative changes in the spleen that included dysplasia and features of neoplasia. Hematoproliferative change was characterized as exuberant proliferation of hematopoietic cells within the spleen that distorted but did not displace normal splenic morphologic features. The hematopoietic cells were of mixed lineage, but one type, often erythroid, predominated. Cellular atypia was present in all mice with hematoproliferative change, and dysplasia was present in five of eight examined. Hematoprolife

Differential expression of CD20 surface antigen in B-cell neoplasms at different sites is largely unknown. The number of CD20 antibodies bound per cell (CD20 ABC) in bone marrow (BM), peripheral blood (PB), and lymph node aspirate (LNA) samples from patients with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) or other B-cell disease was studied using quantitative flow cytometry. CD20 ABC differed significantly with the specimen type in B-CLL, being highest in PB (mean, 9,051) and lower in BM (mean, 4,067) and LNA (mean, 3,951). No difference in CD20 ABC between BM and PB samples was found in sple

Isolated obstruction of the splenic vein leads to segmental portal hypertension, which is a rare form of extrahepatic portal hypertension, but it is important to diagnose, since it can be cured by splenectomy. In a review of the English literature, 209 patients with isolated splenic vein obstruction were found. Pancreatitis caused 65% of the cases and pancreatic neoplasms 18%, whereas the rest was caused by various other diseases. Seventy-two per cent of the patients bled from gastroesophageal varices, and most often the bleeding came from isolated gastric varices. The spleen was enlarged in 7

Classical hairy cell leukemia (cHCL) and related mature lymphoid B-cell neoplasms including hairy cell leukemia variant (HCLv) and splenic diffuse red pulp lymphoma (SDRPL) are a rare subset of lymphoid neoplasms. cHCL accounts for around 2% of all leukemias and is characterized by a peripheral smear with large lymphoid cells with cytoplasmic projections giving the cells a hairy appearance, splenomegaly, and cytopenias. Majority of cHCL cases harbor a BRAFV600E mutation. cHCL usually responds well to single-agent purine analogs. HCLv is even rarer and constitutes around 0.4% of lymphoid malign

BACKGROUND: Primary splenic angiosarcoma is a rare aggressive vascular neoplasm. Although hepatic metastases are common, diffuse intrasinusoidal hepatic involvement is extremely rare and poses a significant diagnostic challenge.
CASE REPORT: A 60-year-old woman presented with bilateral lower extremity edema, hypoalbuminemia, and thrombocytopenia. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed marked splenomegaly, but no distinct hepatic lesions. Gadoxetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging revealed reduced hepatic uptake without focal abnormalities. 1⁸F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emiss

INTRODUCTION: Splenosis is a benign, usually asymptomatic, condition involving autotransplantation of splenic tissue that occurs frequently after splenic rupture caused by trauma or surgery [1]. Up to 67% of the patients presenting splenic rupture may develop splenosis [2]. The interval of time between the initial trauma and the diagnosis varies from 3 to 45 years with an average interval of 21 years [3]. Since the finding of this entity is usually accidental, the real incidence is not well known. Although splenosis following traumatic splenectomy after traffic accidents is well-documented in

CONTEXT: Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) of the pancreas occasionally penetrates to others organs. We present a case of IPMN penetrating to the stomach and the common bile duct.
CASE REPORT: A 75-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of epigastric pain. Computed tomography (CT) showed a papillary tumor protruding into the markedly dilated main pancreatic duct and splenic vein obstruction. The tumor was diagnosed as IPMN arising in the main duct, but he rejected surgery and he was followed without treatment. One year later, gastroduodenoscopy revealed gastropancreati

Littoral cell angioma (LCA) is a rare splenic vascular neoplasm that arises from the cells lining the red pulp sinuses. It is deemed to be a benign and incidental lesion. The earliest literature report of littoral cell angioma has been described by Falk. The examination of samples after splenectomy reveals similar pathological change and its change rule is summarized. However, many recent reports have described it to be a malignant tumor with congenital and immunological associations. Generally speaking, the definitive diagnosis can only be made after histological and immunohistochemical profi

BACKGROUND: Rupture of the spleen in the absence of trauma or previously diagnosed disease is largely ignored in the emergency literature and is often not documented as such in journals from other fields. We have conducted a systematic review of the literature to highlight the surprisingly frequent occurrence of this phenomenon and to document the diversity of diseases that can present in this fashion.
METHODS: Systematic review of English and French language publications catalogued in Pubmed, Embase and CINAHL between 1950 and 2011.
RESULTS: We found 613 cases of splenic rupture meeting the

An 80-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for recurrent chest discomfort and shortness of breath over the past 2 years, with symptoms exacerbated by back pain over the past 3 days. The patient had a history of multiple comorbidities. Physical examination on admission revealed grade III splenomegaly. Peripheral blood tests revealed a white blood cell count of 27.03 × 109/L, a lymphocyte percentage of 62.40%, and an absolute lymphocyte count of 16.87 × 109/L. During hospitalization, the patient's blood pressure suddenly dropped, and he developed shock. Computed tomography scan confirmed a

A 47-year-old male was admitted to our hospital because of left hypochondrium part pain and was diagnosed with splenomegaly with splenic infarctions in May 2016. His complete blood cell count was almost within normal limits, and a bone marrow biopsy revealed normal cellularity with no fibrosis. In addition, no abnormal uptake was noted on FDG PET/CT. In August 2016, he underwent splenectomy for splenomegaly. The histological examination revealed fibrotic stenosis of the blood vessels in the spleen. After splenectomy, his platelet count elevated and remained at >1,000×109/l 3 months later. Fina
