Abdominal multiple splenosis mimicking liver and colon tumors: a case report and review of the literature.

Splenosis is not an uncommon disease. However, it is often misdiagnosed as malignant tumors, and then the patients underwent unnecessary operations. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to diagnose it prior to operation. We report a rare case of a 49-year-old female patient with liver and colon splenosis, misdiagnosed as liver and colon tumors, and summarize experience how to diagnose it preoperatively according to literatures. We come to conclusion that in patients who ever underwent splenectomy especially owning to trauma, and were found mass in abdomen, clinicians must consider the existence

Improved detection of splenosis in patients with haematological disorders: the role of combined transmission-emission tomography.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of combined transmission and emission tomography (TET) for correct localisation of heterotopic splenic tissue and differentiation of splenosis from other masses. The TET technique comprises the fusion of SPET and CT data obtained using the same imaging device to allow perfect overlap of anatomical and functional images. TET was performed in seven patients who either had haematological disorders and relapsing anaemia or thrombocytopenia after splenectomy or were under immunosuppression for different reasons. These patients presented 20 equivocal

Parametric dynamic SPECT using a 3D CZT-ring camera for rapid characterization of disseminated splenosis.

A 71-year-old man underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT for bladder cancer staging, revealing latero-vesical lymphadenopathy and multiple hypermetabolic peritoneal nodules suspicious for carcinomatosis. Given an old history of splenectomy, splenosis was suspected. Dynamic SPECT with heat-damaged labeled erythrocytes using a 3D CZT-ring camera demonstrated linear tracer uptake in splenosis nodules. Parametric slope imaging allowed unequivocal lesion detection and characterization. This dynamic SPECT approach supports the possibility of shortening the overall acquisition time to under 10 minutes, while achie

Laparoscopic resection of isolated hepatic splenosis mimicking liver tumors: case report with a literature review.

Isolated hepatic splenosis is a rare condition in hepatobiliary surgery. In this study, we report a case of this condition managed by laparoscopic surgery. A 38-year-old male hepatitis B virus carrier, who had a motorcycle accident and splenectomy 14 years before the current incident, was hospitalized due to a hepatic mass. His laboratory tests were consistent with a hyposplenic state, whereas radiologic images revealed a benign tumor in the left liver lobe located in a site difficult to access with preoperative biopsy. Therefore, we performed a laparoscopic exploration and total resection, wh

[Autotransplantation of spleen tissue after traumatic spleen rupture (traumatic splenosis). A report of 4 cases].

Report on 4 cases of traumatic splenosis (autotransplantation of splenic tissues) which were diagnosed 1 to 15 years after traumatic spleen rupture in childhood or adolescence. In 3 of the 4 cases traumatic splenosis was detected casually, the other case was misinterpreted during laparoscopy as endometriosis. Histologically the autotransplants reveal functional red and white splenic pulp. This may be significant for hematologic diseases. Although clinical signs are often lacking or noncharacteristic, knowledge of traumatic splenosis is important for surgeons, internists (laparoscopy!), gynecol

Incidental finding of abdominal splenosis with mononucleated cell infiltration leading to a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia.

Splenosis refers to ectopic splenic implants that are often found incidentally years after splenic rupture/splenectomy, and the nodules of splenosis are usually small, less than 3 cm for the majority. We report a case of splenosis with a 5-centimeter large mass in the anterior abdomen in a 79 year-old male with a remote history of splenic rupture/splenectomy. Unexpectedly, needle core biopsy of the abdominal mass demonstrated splenic tissue with a mononucleated cell infiltrate blurring the splenic architecture that was highlighted only by CD8 stain. This finding prompted a bone marrow examinat

Intrathoracic splenosis: a rare false-positive cause of somatostatin imaging in characterization of solitary pulmonary nodule.

Scanning using a somatostatin receptor analog such as Tc-EDDA/HYNIC-TOC has sensitivity and specificity similar to those of FDG-PET, which has high accuracy in the characterization of a solitary pulmonary nodule (SPN). We describe a 63-year-old man with well-defined SPN in the left lung on chest x-ray and CT scan. Whole-body scanning and chest SPECT were performed with Tc-EDDA/HYNIC-TOC for the characterization of SPN. Abnormal focal increased radiotracer uptake in the left hemithorax was detected. In addition, no spleen activity was observed in the anatomical location. Cytopathologic evaluati

Intrahepatic splenosis in a chronic hepatitis C patient with no history of splenic trauma mimicking hepatocellular carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Intrahepatic splenosis (IHS) is the autotransplantation of splenic tissue that mostly develops after abdominal injury and is often misdiagnosed as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) because of similarities in radiological features. We had an opportunity to treat an extremely rare case of intrahepatic splenosis, which were found in a patient without any history of splenic injury. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first such case report in the world. CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old man with chronic hepatitis C was referred to our hospital for further examination of liver function abn

Incidental discovery of abdominal splenosis mimicking metastatic disease during elective incisional hernia repair: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal splenosis is a benign condition that occurs when splenic tissue is implanted within the abdominal cavity after splenic trauma or splenectomy. Most patients remain asymptomatic, and the condition is often detected incidentally. However, when multiple nodules are present, they can closely resemble peritoneal metastases and create uncertainty, particularly when they are encountered unexpectedly during surgery. A lack of awareness may lead to overly aggressive surgical decisions or delays in definitive management. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a patient in whom abdominal sp

Gamna-Gandy bodies in fine-needle aspiration from abdominal splenosis: A clue to underlying portal hypertension.

A 40-year-old woman presented with abdominal pain and jaundice. Past medical history was significant only for splenectomy following a motor vehicle accident. Owing to presence of multiple peritoneal nodules on computerized tomography (CT) and elevated serum CA-125, ovarian peritoneal carcinomatosis was suspected. Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) revealed presence of abundant hemosiderin, leukocytes, endothelial cells, and fungal hypha-like structures. No evidence of neoplasia was found. Findings were consistent with Gamna-Gandy bodies (GGBS) within splenic tissue. Based on histor

Post-traumatic multifocal abdominal splenosis. The role of the clinical history. Case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Splenosis is a benign clinical condition caused by the heterotopic autotransplantation of spleen's tissue tipically occurring after spleen rupture. Splenosis may be asymptomatic and found accidentally. When signs and symptoms occur they are due to mass effect or bleeding of the splenic nodules. CASE REPORT: 74-years-old male presenting with intestinal sub-occlusion and past medical history of post-traumatic splenectomy at 18-years-old. Based on TC findings of multiple hyperenhanced solid lesions located in greater omentum, mesentery and parietal peritoneum of right pelvic walls, t

Splenosis in gastric fundus mimicking gastrointestinal stromal tumor: a report of two cases and review of the literature.

Splenosis refers to heterotopic autotransplantation and implantation of splenic tissue following splenic trauma or surgery. Splenosis in gastric fundus is rare and difficult to diagnose, since splenosis has similar manifestation with gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) under routine endoscopy examination. In this report, we present two quite rare case of splenosis. Both of their pre-operative diagnose under endoscopic ultrasonography was considered as GIST. Finally, one in the abdominal cavity, adhering closely to the gastric fundus, measuring 20 mm × 15 mm, was resected by surgical operatio

Hepatic splenosis preoperatively diagnosed as hepatocellular carcinoma in a patient with chronic hepatitis B: a case report.

We report on a case of hepatic splenosis. A 32-yr-old man underwent a splenectomy due to trauma at the age of 6. He had been diagnosed as being a chronic hepatitis B-virus carrier 16 yr prior to the surgery. The dynamic computer tomography (CT) performed due to elevated serum alpha-fetoprotein (128 ng/mL) demonstrated two hepatic nodules, which were located near the liver capsule. A nodule in Segment IVa had a slight enhancement during both the arterial and portal phases, and another nodule in Segment VI showed a slight enhancement only in the portal phases.
