The early diagnosis of congenital infection frequently depends on the ability to distinguish between infant IgM and maternal IgG antibodies. Staphylococcal protein A, which specifically binds IgG, removed maternal IgG from the serum of newborn infants. Residual IgM antibodies to CMV, rubella, toxoplasmosis, and syphilis were then identified by routine serologic techniques. Persistence of greater than or equal to 25% of the original antibody titer following SPA adsorption distinguished the sera of infants with congenital infection from those of healthy infants. No false negative results were en

Infection of the épidural space was demonstrated on clinic (cauda equina compression) and radiology. Three investigations are considered and compared : Dimer X radiculography, lumbar phlebography, duroliopaque myelography. The transfemoral arcending lumbar catheterization of the epidural veins precise the compression by staphylococcic external pachymeningitis. No liquid is introduced in cerebro spinal fluid : there is not risk of infectious arachnoiditis. Myelography with positive contrast (duroliopaque: ethyl monoiodostearate) is much attractive but it is a procedure not easy to perform, even

Necrosis of rabbit skin produced by thermal injury was found to result in a striking increase in local infectivity of staphylococci that were coagulase-positive and hemolytic, but no local increase in the infectivity of non-pathogenic staphylococci. Infection produced in necrotic burns extended beyond the area of burn and was characterized by hemorrhage, edema, and necrosis of contiguous normal skin. Such infections, however, never resulted in bacteriemia or metastatic abscesses, and there was no effect of the necrotic burn upon the infectivity of staphylococci injected into normal skin of the

Staphylococcus aureus can complicate preceding viral infections, including influenza virus. A bacterial infection combined with a preceding viral infection, known as superinfection, leads to worse outcomes than a single infection. Most of the pulmonary infection literature focuses on the changes in immune responses to bacteria between homeostatic and virally infected lungs. However, it is unclear how much of an influence bacterial virulence factors have in single or superinfection. Staphylococcal species express a broad range of cell wall-anchored proteins (CWAs) that have roles in host adhesi

A male term neonate, at day 23 of life, presented with vesicular lesions over the trunk, which spread to allover the body on the next day. Five days later, he started developing blistering of the skin over the trunk and extremities, which subsequently ruptured, leaving erythematous, tender raw areas with peeling of the skin. The mother had vesicular eruptions, which started on the second day of delivery and progressed over the next 3 days. Subsequently, similar eruptions were noticed in two of the siblings before affecting the neonate. On the basis of the exposure history and clinical picture,

The etiopathogenesis of the Tunisian pemphigus is still ambiguous. Indeed, the complete mechanism, which goes from the causal agent until the final targets, is unknown. Nevertheless, two types of factors were associated in the etiopathogenesis of the pemphigus: genetic and/or environmental factors. We focused our intention in bacterial infectious etiology due to staphylococcus. We report a 42-year-old man presenting staphylococcal infection: anti-desmogleines antibody (1 and 3) at the first infection was negative. Surprisingly, he became positive for anti-Dsg3 antibodies after having relapsed.

Systemic fungal infections are being recognized with increasing frequency in extremely premature neonates. We report two such infants with late-onset mixed infection with Staphylococcal species and unusual fungi. These cases are of interest in view of recent reports on the interaction of Staphylococcal cell wall components and neutrophils, as damaged skin sites could form a nidus and portal of entry for saprophytic fungal pathogens. It is also important to consider fungal infection as a possibility in sick premature infants with necrotic skin lesions even when the systemic signs have an altern

The children were being observed during the course of acute rubella infection and postinfectious period. Quantitative dynamic changes in the normal microflora composition were noted weekly during the first month of the disease as well as in the beginning of the second and the third months. The amount of microorganisms registered 3 weeks and in the beginning of the second month after the onset of rubella infection differed from that in the controls. The identification of the Staphylococcus genus microorganisms has shown an increased number of carriers during the first week, as well as on the th

Primary staphylococcal pneumonia complicated with toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is relatively uncommon in children. Staphylococcus aureus exotoxins are thought to function as superantigens, and seem to promote disease manifestations. The identification of staphylococcal toxin genes by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) offers a specific and rapid diagnostic method for TSS. We describe a 7-year-old child with TSS resulting from staphylococcal pneumonia. S. aureus enterotoxins A and B were detected in the sputum of this patient by PCR.

Toxic shock syndrome is a generalized disease traditionally thought to be caused by toxinproducing strains of Staphylococcus aurus. The syndrome is characterized by fever, hypotension, erythema of the skin, erythematous desquamation and multiple organ involvement. We present a case where the causative agent was most probably streptococci, thus demonstrating that the syndrome probably has a heterogeneous, toxin-related etiology.

To determine the usefulness of the teichoic acid antibody (TAA) test in conditions where unspecific viral and bacterial antibodies are often encountered, we measured TAA by the gel-diffusion method in 475 patients without known staphylococcal disease; they included 213 patients with arthritis, 108 with liver diseases, 100 with gastro-intestinal disorders and 54 with acute pharyngitis. Positive controls were 104 patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia and 203 healthy adults were negative controls. Thirteen (6%) of the healthy adults had positive TAA titres (greater than or equal to 4),

A number of factors of nonspecific reactivity, i.e. complement, lysozyme, properdin, blood serum bactericidal activity, leucocyte phagocytal activity, phagocytal index and completed phagocytosis were studied on 160 guinea pigs with experimental typhoid fever, dysentery and staphylococcal infections. The data of the study showed that with the use of prodigiozan the non-specific reactivity of the host increased even within a short period of time. At the same time the pathological changes in the internal organs in their histochemical investigation decreased.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) are severe complications of arthroplasty in which biofilm formation on implant surfaces compromises microbiological diagnosis and antimicrobial efficacy. Although staphylococci remain the predominant pathogens, Gram-negative bacilli have increasingly been associated with diagnostic failure and unfavorable clinical outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the formation, maturation, and structural organization of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial biofilms and to investigate the effects of a standardized sonication protocol on biofilm disru

Bacterial infections are a growing global healthcare concern, as an estimated annual 4.95 million deaths are associated with antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is one of the deadliest pathogens and a high-priority pathogen according to the World Health Organization. Peptidoglycan hydrolases (PGHs) of phage origin have been postulated as a new class of antimicrobials for the treatment of bacterial infections, with a novel mechanism of action and no known resistances. The modular architecture of PGHs permits the creation of chimeric PGH libraries. In this

The objective of the study is to assess the efficacy and tolerability of penicillins compared to anti-staphylococcal beta-lactams for treatment of penicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections (PSSA BSI). A retrospective cohort study was conducted of 140 sequential PSSA BSI presenting to a local health district (90 cases included). Penicillin susceptibility was confirmed by disc diffusion, Vitek® and Nitrocefin beta-lactamase methods. Clinical information regarding comorbidities and infection complexity was recorded. Antibiotic choice, dosage and duration were reviewed. O

BACKGROUND: Biofilm production has been established as a virulence factor which allows Staphylococcus to adhere and persist in medical devices. The objective was to determine whether therapeutic failure in patients infected with Staphylococcus spp. is linked to biofilm production, the presence of the ica operon, and the bacterial insertion sequence element IS256.
METHODS: Staphylococcus spp. isolates from patients with device-related infections were collected. Therapeutic failure with proper antimicrobial treatment was registered. Biofilm phenotype was determined by Congo red test agar and Ch

Two cases in adults with recurrent staphylococcal infections associated with abnormal granulocytic chemotaxis and hyperimmunoglobulinaemia E (Job's syndrome) are described. The pathophysiological mechanisms seems to consist of an abnormal IgE reaction against staphylococcal antigens causing secondary abnormality of granulocyte function. Abnormal cellular immune function was demonstrated in vitro and in vivo. Corticosteroid administration at first proved effective in both patients. One patient developed Hodgkin's disease of the mixed type in the course of the disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Accurate detection of staphylococcal beta-lactamase remains a diagnostic challenge, despite its importance for guiding antibiotic therapy, particularly in severe infections, such as endocarditis and bacteraemia. Currently, no available method reliably detects beta-lactamase activity in all staphylococcal species. Here, we evaluated a novel fluorogenic biotracer, 352600-C (MOLSID, Lyon, France), designed to detect beta-lactamase activity in staphylococci.
METHODS: The 352600-C biotracer was incorporated into Mueller-Hinton agar plates onto which staphylococcal strain
