Antibiotic resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae in children with acute otitis media treatment failure.

OBJECTIVES: The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a major cause of treatment failure in children with acute otitis media (AOM). This study aimed to analyze the types of bacterial strains in fluid isolated from the middle ear of children with AOM who did not respond to oral antibiotic treatment. We also determined the antibiotic resistance of the most frequently isolated bacterial strain (Streptococcus pneumoniae) found in these children. METHODS: This was a prospective study of 157 children with AOM aged from 6 months to 7 years admitted due to unsuccessful oral antibiotic treatme

Development of PCR primers and a DNA macroarray for the simultaneous detection of major Staphylococcus species using groESL gene.

Staphylococcus spp., including S. aureus, S. intermedius, S. hyicus, S. epidermidis, S. saprophyticus, S. haemolyticus, S. xylosus, and S. carnosus, are major bacterial species associated with food poisoning, and human and veterinary clinics. Traditional methods for the identification of these staphylococci are time-consuming, laborious, or inaccurate. Therefore, rapid and accurate diagnostic methods are needed. In this study, we designed the DNA probes and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers for the detection of the aforementioned Staphylococcus species. These primers were proved to be sp

Resistance patterns of bacterial pathogens causing lower respiratory tract infections: Aleppo-Syria.

UNLABELLED: Globally, lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) are one of the lead causes of death. Bacterial and susceptibility profiles are not constant over time and geographically, and different patient factors can be correlated with those infections. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to scan the bacterial spectrum causing LRTIs, their susceptibility profile and patient related risk factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two hundred sixty-eight specimens from LRTIs suspected patients attending University Hospital were collected. Specimens included bronchial washings, transtracheal aspiration samples

Characterisation of Staphylococci species from neonatal blood cultures in low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: In low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) Staphylococcus aureus is regarded as one of the leading bacterial causes of neonatal sepsis, however there is limited knowledge on the species diversity and antimicrobial resistance caused by Gram-positive bacteria (GPB). METHODS: We characterised GPB isolates from neonatal blood cultures from LMICs in Africa (Ethiopia, Nigeria, Rwanda, and South Africa) and South-Asia (Bangladesh and Pakistan) between 2015-2017. We determined minimum inhibitory concentrations and performed whole genome sequencing (WGS) on Staphylococci isolates recovered

Microbial richness and air chemistry in aerosols above the PBL confirm 2,000-km long-distance transport of potential human pathogens.

The existence of viable human pathogens in bioaerosols which can cause infection or affect human health has been the subject of little research. In this study, data provided by 10 tropospheric aircraft surveys over Japan in 2014 confirm the existence of a vast diversity of microbial species up to 3,000 m height, which can be dispersed above the planetary boundary layer over distances of up to 2,000 km, thanks to strong winds from an area covered with massive cereal croplands in Northeast (NE) Asia. Microbes attached to aerosols reveal the presence of diverse bacterial and fungal taxa, includin

Mixed infection in adult bacterial meningitis.

12 adult patients suffering from bacterial meningitis caused by mixed infection were identified at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital over a period of 13 years (1986-1998), and they accounted for 6.5% (12/184) of our culture-proven adult bacterial meningitis. The 12 cases included seven males and five females, aged 17-74 years. Six of the 12 cases had community-acquired infections and the other six had nosocomially-acquired infections. Ten of the 12 cases had associated underlying diseases, with head trauma and/or neurosurgical procedure being the most frequent. Both gram-negative and gram

Investigation of pathogen resistance in Chinese cancer patients based on bacterial resistance surveillance in 23 provinces, 2016-2023.

BACKGROUND: Infection is a common and often fatal complication in cancer patients. Notably, cancer patients account for up to 21% of all sepsis cases. Furthermore, sepsis is present in 30% of all deaths among those hospitalized with cancer. However, comprehensive antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance data specific to this population are lacking. This gap hinders the effectiveness of antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs). METHODS: We investigated bacterial distribution and AMR patterns in Chinese cancer patients to inform empirical therapy and ASPs. This multicenter retrospective stu

Aggressiveness - the key to a successful outcome in Fournier's Gangrene.

Nine patients with Fournier's gangrene were managed during last five years in various service hospitals. Mean age was 51 years (range 21-81 years). Most of these patients were from middle and upper class. Common predisposing factors included diabetes mellitus, alcohol abuse and poor personal hygiene. Streptococcus haemolyticus, Staphylococcus aureus and E coli were the commonest organisms cultured in most of these patients. Our experience indicates that the lower gastrointestinal tract should be considered as a possible cause of infection in all patients with Fournier's gangrene as 5 patients

Smartphone-based multispectral autofluorescence analysis of bacteria mixtures of staphylococci using convolutional neural network.

Despite the numerous merits of bioreceptor-based biosensors for detecting bacteria, they often fail to identify complex bacterial mixtures, such as those encountered in microbiome analysis, especially when the bacterial mixtures belong to the same genus. Additionally, their procedure involves multiple steps of reagent rinsing and/or staining. This work demonstrates the proof-of-concept for smartphone-based multispectral autofluorescence analysis of bacterial mixtures belonging to the same genus: Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Staphylococcus capitis, and Staphylococcus
