Bacterial Contamination in Stored Blood for Transfusion and Associated Infectious Risks Among Patients with Cancer at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Patients with cancer often require supportive transfusion therapy. However, this approach is undermined by the risk of bacterial contamination. This study assessed the bacterial contamination rate, identified the bacterial contaminants and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns; and the associated infectious risk to patients with cancer at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, in southwestern Uganda. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective cohort study used a pre-transfusion aliquot of donor blood or components for blood culture. Positive cultures were identified and their anti

Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of commensal staphylococci isolated from young volunteers in Alexandria, Egypt.

Nasally colonized staphylococci carry antibiotic resistance genes and may lead to serious opportunistic infections. We are investigating nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococci other than S. aureus (SOSA) among young volunteers in Egypt to determine their risk potential. Nasal swabs collected over 1 week in June 2019 from 196 volunteers were cultured for staphylococcus isolation. The participants were interviewed to assess sex, age, general health, hospitalization and personal hygiene habits. Identification was carried out using biochemical tests and VITEK 2 automated system.

Skin bacterial colonizations and superinfections in immunocompetent patients with scabies.

BACKGROUND: Skin bacterial colonizations and superinfections are well-known complications of scabies, in particular, in tropical and subtropical countries. However, only very rare studies on skin bacterial colonizations and superinfections have been carried out in immunocompetent patients with scabies living in Western countries. METHODS: Eighty-nine Caucasian adult immunocompetent patients with scabies living in Milan, Italy, were subjected to bacteriologic examinations of the skin. Clinical diagnosis of scabies was confirmed in all patients by means of microscopic examinations: they were co

The incidence of bacteremia in skin surgery of the head and neck.

The normal microflora of skin vary significantly between sebaceous rich, wet, and dry areas. This would be expected to influence the likelihood of developing transient bacteremia while undergoing skin surgery on these different areas, thereby affecting the risk of infective endocarditis from such procedures. We evaluated the incidence of transient bacteremia in 45 patients undergoing skin surgery on the sebaceous rich areas of the head and neck. After surveillance skin cultures, aerobic and anaerobic blood culture samples were taken at 0, 1, 5, and 15 minutes after the start of the procedure.

Prevalence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of bacteria isolated from cerebrospinal fluid among children with bacterial meningitis in China from 2016 to 2018: a multicenter retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric bacterial meningitis (PBM) remains a devastating disease that causes substantial neurological morbidity and mortality worldwide. However, there are few large-scale studies on the pathogens causing PBM and their antimicrobial resistance (AMR) patterns in China. The present multicenter survey summarized the features of the etiological agents of PBM and characterized their AMR patterns. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with PBM were enrolled retrospectively at 13 children's hospitals in China from 2016 to 2018 and were screened based on a review of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) micr

Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis B8762 modulates the infant gut-lung axis via microbial and metabolic reprogramming.

Respiratory and gastrointestinal infections are leading causes of morbidity in children. Increasing evidence highlights the gut-lung axis as a key regulatory interface influencing infection susceptibility. Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis B8762 (B8762) has shown clinical efficacy in reducing such infections, but its mechanistic basis remains unclear. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 115 infants (probiotic group: n = 57, placebo group: n = 58; aged 6-12 months), fecal metagenomic sequencing was performed to assess microbial and functional changes after fou

Culturable Nasal Bacteria in Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps: A Single-Center Observational Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Bacteria colonizing the nasal cavity contribute to mucosal homeostasis, and altered sinonasal bacterial communities have been associated with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). Whether routine, culture-based microbiology can distinguish the cultivable bacterial profile of CRSwNP patients from that of controls remains unclear. METHODS: In this single-center observational pilot study, middle-meatus swabs from 30 patients with CRSwNP and 30 controls were cultured on four media, and isolates were identified with the VITEK 2 system. For each species, presence or absence

Serious bacterial infections after endoscopic procedures.

Transient bacteremia during and after endoscopic procedures is a well- documented phenomenon, but complicated bacteremia such as endocarditis in patients at risk is considered to be extremely rare. The recommendations for prophylaxis before endoscopy in patients with valvular heart disease were recently released. We discuss 16 cases of complicated bacteremia that developed after endoscopy (eight cases previously published in the literature and eight cases we encountered). The endoscopic procedures were gastroscopy (five cases), sclerotherapy (six cases), sigmoidoscopy (three cases), and esopha

From clean to colonized: microbial dynamics of bed linen over time.

Bed linen can act as a reservoir for microorganisms transferred from skin, dust, and the environment. Despite the importance of linen hygiene in healthcare and hospitality, evidence on bed-changing frequency is limited, with studies reporting only cross-sectional microbiological data. This study investigated longitudinal bacterial and fungal colonization of bed linen over 4 weeks in a domestic environment. Nine participants used polycotton bed linen for 1 day to 4 weeks. Swatches were collected from the pillow, hip, and foot regions, analyzed using viable counts and amplicon-based sequencing.

Antibacterial and deodorizing effects of cold atmospheric plasma-applied electronic deodorant.

Axillary odor is a malodor produced by bacterial metabolism near the apocrine glands, which often causes discomfort in an individual's daily life and social interactions. A deodorant is a personal care product designed to alleviate or mask body odor. Currently, most deodorants contain antimicrobial chemicals and fragrances for odor management; however, direct application to the underarm skin can result in irritation or sensitivity. Therefore, there is a growing interest in technologies that enable disinfection and odor control without the antiperspirants or perfumes. The cold atmospheric plasm
